This monster of a video explores JJ Cohen's Monster Theory and the cultural and etymological roots of classical and modern monsters, with some surprising financial connections along the way! Please forgive us for being more than a month late with this video, which we of course intended for Halloween.
Content note: this video contains several brief discussions of racism, slavery, and obsolete racist terminology.

I actually like these longer videos. Some parts of my job are fairly mindless and repetitive (such as sticking labels on a stack of items), so it is nice to listen to etymology and history while I do the same task for an hour. Really, these videos let me enjoy that sort of work -- it's very relaxing.

Hi! Although I'm a year late at this point, I'd thought I'd mention that the Norse "björn" and all its counterparts meaning "brown" in the Germanic languages is a euphemism people used so they wouldn't have to use the real word and call its attention to themselves. It's very possible that the true name for the animal was such a large taboo that it's become lost to history. Entirely in keeping with the theme of monsters.

In Dutch "Monster" has two meanings: monster or sample. I think it is the same in Scandinavian languages...

So... at 12.30ish when you say the pound weight(?) was 240 silver coins, from centuries ago, is this why it was 12 pennies in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound even up to decimalisation in the UK in 1971? Basically still 240 pennies in a pound. Or is that coincidence? Edit - I've just rewatched the segment again. I don't think it is coincidence and my mind is blown.

I suspect the Elder Pliny had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek when relating incredulity towards the clothing being still "good". I suspect that the 9 days of Zeus hanging from Yggdrasil is somehow cognate with the 9 Gates of Hell, and that the Elder Pliny's Account may be a retelling of a Concept of The Heaven and Hell Traditions the Ancients passed on to All of us in their Numerological Alphabetical Anthologies. I'm still giggling about the Lion.. and now I'm seeing a wise old Father of History grinning across the spans of Time Itself nodding back at me.. winking. The 7 deadly sins are found in the 7 chakras of the physiological soul-man. These are fairly similar across the Board regardless of the Age or Culture.. I always wondered why there were only 7 Deadly Sins and 9 Gates, Realms or Levels of Hell.. and Now I believe my ancient brother, the Elder Pliny may have connected the Dots to the Doors for me.. hopefully just temporally speaking.. off course.. ! Once 1 becomes a mortal soul, one must be held Accountable for not only what we should know, but what we didn't.. from the Hebrew G0D's Perspective, at least. As in, " I have said, 'ye are gods', but you will die like men.", per King David, reiterated by his Progeny Yeshua Ha'Moshiach, a.k.a. Jesus Christ in the current English vernacular. So once we have become mortal flesh, we must be tested on each level.. presuming we all either Start our awareness of Eternity during our stay in hell.. Or.. having fallen into Hell out of our own choices or misperceptions of our own " Righteousness" or limited selfish perceptions and impressions. So 1 sin in the mortal realm is 1 level of hell.. but the Extra 2 Gates belong only to the Creator God for either the Gate out or into hell and the Other to Heaven Itself and Ultimately.. our Ascension back to our Father's Presence and the Holy Spirit bears each of our mortal witnesses throughout the entire process, from the Moment we come On Line from the perspective of our own awareness within this mortal life. There seems to be a consensus in my own spirit right now, that this is a Central Truth that is within the Nidus & Umbilical Spiritual Torsions which rings a 3 note harmonious chord, so I have my answer as to the Tension between the Polarities of our Teachers and ancestors and That of our Celestial Guardians and the ones Behind that Immortal Veil! Wow! Who knew 1 terrific language video and a gorgeous Friday afternoon would be like That? Seriously? Who knew? I'll bet Pliny had odds on it! Lol! And I Know my Creative Director certainly Has.. all along. I think our Heavenly Father and the rest of the ones in His Service on Either Side of this 3 Ring Circus of Life in the Light of Christ are cheering for me to get and Keep a Clue.. so they must either All have fallen themselves at some point.. or knew they would.. or maybe they are just Fans of a Learning Curve! In my case, all I know is that Inspiration Begins With Love.. and whatever comes Next must Reckon with That. What a gr8! Day to be alive! December 11th, 2020 A.D. I found a cookie.. 🤗

The reference to Halloween costume is not correct, it was a pagan tradition, at that time, for people to disguise themselves so that the spirits of their ancestors would not recognise them and cause them harm or mischief. This evolved into the custom of fancy dress along with trick or treat and it is, today, highly commercial. A note about coins and shields, pre-Euro Portuguese currency was the escudo which means shield.
@Alliterative
@Alliterative 3 года назад
There are many elements to the custom of dressing up for Halloween, we did a video on "Costume" that talks about some of them, and one about "Jack-o-Lantern" that talks about the background and development of Halloween. And thanks for the reminder about the escudo, good connection!

Is there any evidence whatsoever that ancient peoples found fossils and dug them up carefully enough to reassemble them and notice they looked like dragons? That just seems like such a ludicrously fanciful supposition. There was some mining done back then but they did not have archaeologists or paleontologists to call in when they found something interesting.
@Alliterative
@Alliterative 3 года назад
You’d have to read Adrienne Mayor’s “The First Fossil Hunters” for her full argument; there’s definitely an account of giant bones that they found and thought were of Orestes, within the historical sources; but the dragon ones & the boars are (as I recall) more based in probability and some parallels to Chinese stories.

Interesting that the cartoon of the fat capitalists sitting on top of a wooden floor that in turn presses down on hundreds of poor labourers is reminiscent of a particularly gruesome event in the legend of Vlad the Impaler, a precursor of Dracula and a monster in his own right.

I have to say something. Dragons are not found in many place of the world. This is a misconception. The concept of dragons are almost exclusively either a serpent, or the medieval one from Europe, which is a syncretism of the grecorroman/christian Serpent(Dragon), the Gallian/French Wyvern and the Norse Wyrm by a Norman writter. The concept of calling anything else a dragon is due to missionaries, that are basically, cultural conquistadores, imperialists in a very bad disguise used to culturally eliminate the legitimacy of the foreigners religion. A practice that came from the Romans and other empires, to the point that they syncretized many gods into their ones. Yes, add the myth of the Tower of Babel to the equation, where "all religions and cultures came from an original one. Which is the original? Ours it is, of course! Praise the Lord!". This is why we call the Jotum "giants", de Djinn "Genees" and the Long/Ryuu/Yeong as... "dragon". If you accept that "everything is a dragon", then you will also have to accept that Yahweh/The Lord/Allah, is Bacchus/Dionisius, since the Romans called the god of the Hebrews: "Bacvs Ivevs", or, "Bacchus of the Jews". (Remember that the first miracle of Jesus was to convert water in wine? ;) The Romans were already very stablished by then...)
