A wander around Bowling's old harbour to glimpse the wrecks of up to 14 boats and ships that lie rusting and rotting in the water. Bowling sits on the banks of the River Clyde, or the Firth of Clyde, not far from Glasgow, between Clydebank and Dumbarton. The harbour is located where the Forth & Clyde Canal meets the River Clyde, with older parts going back to 1810. It was designed as a harbour where boats entering or leaving the Forth & Clyde Canal could dock either before or after their journey through the canal. Further to recent improvements by the Scottish Canals authority, Bowling Harbour and the immediate surrounding area, including Bowling's historic viaduct, has been transformed into a tourist hotspot that has information panels and tremendous views over the harbour and the Firth of Clyde. And on a day as beautiful as this, it is quite simply stunning and very much worth a visit. Visitors can get a train to Bowling from Glasgow, or walk from Clydebank along the old towpath of the Forth & Clyde Canal to the harbour and a wonderful linear park.

I once got on a train at a station where there was no ticket sales facility. A few minutes later, as I sat with my fare money in hand, the ticket collector came along saying ‘tickets please’. When he reached me, for some reason I don’t recall, I ignored him. Maybe I was tired, or over anxious, I just can’t remember. The ticket collector stood beside me, and I’m sure he looked at me. I was evidently the only passenger the ticket collector hadn’t served in that part of the carriage. Then, he walked on repeating the phrase ‘tickets please’, leaving me with my ticket money still in hand, and a free train journey to wherever I was going. Thanks for the video. I used to go past Bowling on the train, and have visited the town a few times. It’s a very interesting place to visit, especially because of the old harbour with all those ‘dead’ boats.

I worked at Bowling Harbour several times in the mid sixties: I was an apprentice 'ships Upholsterer'. In fact I worked in shipyards all along both sides of the Clyde and beyond. I have great memories of the pub at the Harbour......Pies and peas and a lager tops. Great video.

Hi Eddy, another fantastic production. Your overall technique of choosing the right location or scene, the lighting and movement of the camera is really good. The background music is great as well, and you were blessed with a beautiful day to capture the stunning views. Looks like a great place to spend time and explore. As one of the other comments mentioned, all that was missing was a tasty pie! All the best Eddy, regards Rob.

Absolutely brilliant video Eddie. Amazing views and the old hulks of the boats are a sight to see. The haunting soundtrack was very fitting. I would love to visit that place, especially on such a stunning day. Thankyou so much. All the best.

I've been watching the boats deteriorate over the last 15 years since I started to drive trains on that line, most of the boats used to float, but the passage of time has taken its toll, when the tide is out, you'll see the remains.

It certainly looks like spring has sprung. Bowling is always a great place to stroll around when the weather is nice. You did a way better job than me of highlighting the surrounding scenery. I think you are probably right about the dates of some of the ships being the 19th century. Such a mix of different styles and materials. The last time I visited Bowling the harbour was frozen over, It was a very surreal looking place that day. When you created the shipbuilding video I was a little surprised you didn't include The bowling yard (Scotts and Sons) in the video... I think you made the right call because Bowling deserved it's own video. Yet another great video...
@EdExploresScotland
@EdExploresScotland 2 года назад
Thanks. It was difficult knowing where to stop with the shipbuilding video; a video a year long wouldn't have covered it all. If I'd mentioned Bowling (and at the time I actually didn't know about Scotts & Sons) I would need to have mentioned Dumbarton's yards. I sort of decided to stick to upper Clyde shipbuilders, although I'm not entirely sure where the upper Clyde begins. A half-hour video about Clyde shipbuilding is clearly an impossibility. The Scottish Canal authority have recently carried out major improvements in the area of Bowling harbour. It surprised and impressed me. Visit it without delay!

Used to get the train up to Uni in the 90s when I lived in the Vale. The basin was a graveyard for boats even then.

Great video Ed, I know the area well when cycling to Balloch from Anniesland but never noticed the sunken boats, I’ll check them out next time but I tend to stop on my bike at the Bay Inn for a beer or two which makes the cycle back tougher. The video an background music was really good, very slick👍🏻

Some great shots there Eddy. 👍 I've never been to Bowling, but it certainly looks worth a visit. Maybe Para Handy's ghost haunts the old boats. As for your standing charge, does your energy supplier have the words ''Scottish'' and ''Power'' in their name? I've never been with them, but heard about their standing charge years ago. I was told that they introduced it during WW2, but cant verify if that's true or not. I've never had a standing charge. Maybe you should shop around for a new supplier. Keep up the good work!

Being from Helensburgh originally (my family are still there) I would pass this daily on the train on my way to work. I never visited Bowling so it's great to see this from a new perspective and I may hop off the train the next time I head back. Have you considered a film on Helensburgh at all? I know you were briefly there for The Three Lochs Way. but the town is steeped in history (John Logie Baird, Henry Bell), as well as being home to the Hill House. It's not something I've ever considered doing as it feels strange to try and talk about an area I would see day after day. The enthusiasm was never quite there! It would be great to see your perspective.

Many thanks. I'm always trying to think of potential video subjects. Helensburgh certainly has a lot of history, although for some reason its long straight well-ordered streets bore me a tad. I'd like to see a few bends, narrow wynds and byways at jaunty angles, but that's just me. At the end of the day its a symptom of just how young Helensburgh is. Thank you for the suggestion.

Nice job! i just uploaded a wee fly about one or 2 of these boats today and wondered what it was all about hence finding this video... But im just amateur hobby stuff and didnt want to disturb any birds for prolonged periods , check out my bowling basin post for a birds eye view of the big metal boat. oh ,you talk about energy price increase....im with eon energy advertised as 100% wind power , im still struggling to comprehend how they can pass on the price of wholesale wind to thier customers....awrabest!

Cheers. Someone - maybe it was yourself - was taking drone footage on the day I was filming. I always thought it was a bit scary flying a drone over the River Clyde, because if it falls, it's lost forever.

Im the same ed- i got a bill in a few days ago from scottish gas and my bill had tripled! I told them i wouldnt pay it and id cancel my direct debit immediately! Funnily enough they gave me a refund straight away. It is a human tragedy in ukraine and i cannot believe that putin has invaded the country and more so that the west is not doing anything militarily to stop it. The only way to beat a bully is to face him - he will never learn otherwise! I have heard that putin is now possibly looking at moldova next... all the best in these scary times👍
