Our manure comes from three main areas on the farm right now ... the winter pig hoop house, the winter cattle lot, and the chick brooder/winter rabbit colony. We will also have the winter areas for the rabbits, pigs and the chick brooder, but in the future we would like to do a lot more stockpile grazing and even bale grazing to cut down on the cattle winter lot manure!

We raised chickens on my grandparent’s farm as well. My grandma’s pride and joy was a rose garden. We cleaned out the laying house once a year. We took that manure around her garden and she had some of the greatest looking roses I saw or have yet see.

I believe that! The chicken manure and the winter rabbit shed manure is a pretty big help in the gardens!

Composting happens much faster if you apply the manure direct ! Night crawlers devore it ! No need to " double " handle it ! Just added costs !

I would disk it quickly to cover the ruts then let it go. Great job bubby.

My initial thought was probably more tillage minded, but now I’m thinking less. Like you said though, there are plenty of places that will new some disking to smooth out the erosion. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

My thought is to chisel plow it then run a field cultivator across it. That’ll get your manure incorporated and help the compaction fast.

That was one of my thoughts as well ... then we talked with the grazing specialist from the NRCS about all sorts of things, but one of them was tillage passes. I'm open to trying some new things and I may give his suggestions a try (more on that to come in future videos). All that being said, I may end up doing exactly what you suggested at some point :)

I could spend a lot of time talking about what I think about tillage and compaction, but my quick opinion is that I wouldn't really worry about fixing any compaction problem with tillage in your situation. A quick tillage pass with something like a disc or chisel to smooth out any ruts or really rough areas might be all I would consider. Most of my compaction problems seem to be the result of tillage with various compaction layers at the depth of most tillage passes (one at the depth of the disc, one at the depth of a cultivator, etc.) A tillage pass might look like it loosened up the soil, but it's actually just fluffed everything up over a harder compaction layer. Grass roots are what breaks up compaction.

You have similar thoughts to the discussion that we had with our local NRCS grazing specialist. There are some "problem" areas that we have to hit with the disk to smooth out the erosion channels, but the NRCS grazing specialist had some good ideas about using the roots like you mentioned, and I like the idea of giving it a try!
