Where Should You Place Your Net Pots in a Deep Water Culture System?

I've gotten this question so many times that it's about time I answer it on the channel! When growing in a Deep Water Culture (DWC) system, many people write in and ask, "Where should the bottom of my net pots be in relation to the nutrient reservoir?"
It's a good question, and the answer is pretty simple...so watch and find out!

LOVE your channel! I'm new to aqua/hydroponics. I couldn't get the plants that I wanted to start my 3 1/2 gal betta fish jars, so I had to buy seeds. Is this the same how-to advice for growing seeds inside of rock wool in a net pot of hydroton? Thank you for your generous sharing with us.

Like the video because it solves a practical problem. My current system uses overhead drip to get the roots growing, then once the roots are out of the net pot, I put water line just above the bottom of the net pot, start the water stones, then I keep overhead drip irrigation pretty much forever to replenish the water.

I have several 27 gallon totes running the kratky system. I drop my net pots in the top of the tote and fill the tote with water and liquid nutrients until the level reaches the first horizontal rib in the net pots(perhaps a half inch or less). For rock wool I place the cube on the bottom of the net pot and add clay pellets, for bare root plants I hold the plant up with the longest root just touching the bottom of the net pot and carefully fill the pot with clay pellets. Most plants will put roots into the reservoir in days after hitting the nutrient solution. I checked some bare root lettuce plants that I put into the tote five days ago and the roots are all over the outside of the net pot already. Peppers and tomatoes are already showing good growth.

I know this is a 4 year old video but I have a question please. I’ve been trying to grow tomatoes in DWC. My cherry tomatoes are going gangbusters. But tried Big Boy purchased as starter plants from Lowes. Both have not been successful. The leaves curl and get spotty the flowers drop. Could the issue be I’m using small River pebbles for medium which definitely is not a wicking medium. Both already had long roots when I started that reached the nutrients and I left air space. It has been very hot days in the 90’s. Plants are outside partial sun. Thanks

Hi! Im really glad I found you....im new to hydroponics...trying the Kratky canning jar method for herbs, greens and hopefully small cukes strawberries too..My jars are covered with paper, I have 6 jars planted...the seeds have popped but immediately became leggy... My question is without needing a degree in math or purchasing measuring instruments..what is an EZ way to determine how long to leave the grow lite on an how close should it be to the plant? I have a 12x12 in led (red/blue) combo led light...thanks so much for answering your peeps posts...no one around here is into hydroponics...so having to rely on youtube for my info. my leaves are droopy and i couldnt figure out if i was overwatering or underwatering, i placed them right where you showed. I tried letting them dry out and also tried cranking that airstone all the way up. very slow growth for a week, still on first set of leaves out of seed...should i add nutes yet or hold off. i think i moved them to the dwc system to soon out of the germination pod, i saw a tiny root like yours and said! and moved over to clay and netipot. from netipot to water level it was a good 3 inches (eventually made it down there) (is that why its growing slow, or lack of nutes)

Hi thank you for sharing. I use clear 9 oz plastic cub cover the small plant when they don’t have the roots out to the water to prevent from cold and keep it moisture. I try to grow Thai basil but the leafs getting small than I grow in the soil. But the bell pepper the leafs is so big. Do I have to increase the nutrition when the plant getting bigger or not? Thx
@epicgardening
@epicgardening 6 лет назад
+rockin roadways it's hard to say if nutrition is your problem in this situation, because there are so many variables. What I would do is make sure and test your nutrient solution to see if you have enough of the macro-nutrients that basil needs: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. If the leaves aren't big, one of the major problems could be a lack of nitrogen

I honestly love this video and your channel! I have a quick question though if that’s cool? Should you ever leave an air pocket between the water level and the net pot in a recirculating system, and if so how much space should there be? In my system, there are multiple air stones running. However, my water levels are touching the bottom of the net pots, and I feel like I am drowning the roots or potentially going to harm the plants somehow. What should I do in your opinion with the water levels?

Hey Kevin...pretty epic channel you have going and it's super helpful, especially for someone in India where the learning tools for hydroponics are limited....had a couple of quick questions....for germination, would it be correct to keep the water level at around 5-10% above the base of the net pot....second, what would you say is the perfect germination/growth medium for a hands-off setup....I'm thinking base of rock wool topped up with coconut coir with a bit of vermiculite thrown in...works?..thank you!
@epicgardening
@epicgardening 6 лет назад
Germination I'd say 5-10% is fine if you have an airstone bubbling the water. Your germination medium is great, except I'd add perlite instead of vermiculite. Vermiculite holds water well and perlite doesn't, which is what you want if you already have coconut coir.

Okay my vote. I don't see enough videos on small indoor setups of Kratky hydroponics for people who have a few shelving systems and want to grow most of their produce with T5 and/or CFL mixed wavelengths. Rather than using monster sized buckets and containers, I'd rather do 1-4 quart individual containers to maximize successive plantings of lettuce, greens, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, microgreens and baby leaf. Hey Kevin, growing herbs in that same fashion, would it also work (or be harmful) to just let the water level remain at just touching the bottom of the rockwool cube so that it always remains moist while that root system is getting established, instead of checking in with more frequency to drip some water on the cube? Thanks bro, love your work
@epicgardening
@epicgardening 6 лет назад
I'd recommend that, yeah. Then again, I typically am a bit more hands-off and dump a bunch of water into the rockwool, and then trust that the roots will make their way down to a bubbling reservoir before it dries out. But if you are running these small Krakty systems like I show in this video, then yes, definitely pour a bit of water in as it evaporates to ensure moistness. Thanks for the kind words my friend! Let me know what types of videos you want to see in the future.

I've just watched the video and am using the air stones. It appears I'm doing the same as the video; the net pot has the rock wool which has the seed. The bottom of the pots are not in the water (they are actually about 4 inches above the water line), but are being hit by the air bubbles. However, three of the pots never sprouted and the rock wool has been drenched by the air bubbles to the point of being soaking wet. My question is can the rock wool be too wet? If so, would it be smart to only have the very base of the pot just 'peeking' through the cut hole at the bottom rather than sitting on its lip (the way you showed yours)?

@@Hedgehodge- no I never did. I decided the rock wool just stayed to saturated, no matter what. I decided to put my seeds in seed starter plugs, took a styrofoam 2" sheet, put felt on it, and put it in a tray of water only up to the bottom of the felt. I put the seed in it's plug in a net pot on the felt, covered it with a mini green house cover (plastic with vents) - put the whole thing on a heating mat and it worked beautifully. Then once they got their first true leaves, I transferred them over to the water culture before the roots could grow into the felt. It might not have been the way to do it, but it worked for me.
@Hedgehodge-

I've been researching hydroponics for the last 8 hours and I must say I am disappointed. I have watched people use toxic PVC with PVC glue (even more toxic), rockwool (which is dangerous to touch, inhale and eat), and none of the videos addresses the issue of how long the seedling net pots take to develop roots that can actually touch the water. A lot of blah blah, and never touching the key subjects. Everybody is showing how to cut holes and connect pvc pipes, as if this was the hard part. Yours is as close it got, so good job on that. But even you, you describe solutions that are unreliable, like top drip and air bubbles. Thanks thought, as I said yours is the best video on the subject anyway and your channel is very good.

To answer your question. I am only interested in vegetables in any form....I would appreciate a title to each video which indicates accurately the subject. House plants, flowers are of no interest to me and I do not want to waste time on videos that are no good to me..But I am all ears for veg...thanks

I try to cover a large range on the channel, so if you ever see a houseplant video that you're not into, feel free to skip!

In short With roots - no worries, as long as the roots hit the water solution Without roots - 1. Make sure that medium is moist enough until the roots start popping 2. If you have air stone, the moist from bubbles will keep the medium moist until roots start poppin. Thanks👍

NOW I AM WORRIED THE MEDIUM SHOULD BE TOUCHING THE BOTTOM, YES OR NO? Anyone seen this recently? I definitely having trouble with my first DWC from vivosun 4 pot set. I didnt wanna soend loads on ebb n flow or any other exoensive system at least until i actually nail this qnd can get DWC right I have only d8ne soil but the 30% plus added growth interests me the most. I've noticed a humongous diff between a soil and a dwc bucket for same exact cuts in sane exact lighting so really, i feel like if i can dial this in its easier to be honest(once u dial in whichever systen you have) But yeah, ...so i am mostly going cheap for the exact reason as I've never done it successfully b4. (I had an ebb n flow but the guy i had set it up acter like he knew his stuff but 8n the end it was almost worthless but mostly dur to my lack of kbowledge ,kike reading a olant by seeing how wet the medium can be. Ya need that not soaked but moisr and lots of trouble getting that dialed in. I have top drip and airstone, top drip is supposed to get it to whete the roots finally reach the bottom of the net. NOW I AM WORRIED THE MEDIUM SHOULD BE TOUCHING THE BOTTOM, YES OR NO?

My tap root has finally reached the water. Should i wait for a few more before lowering the water level?

Why not just fill the mason jar up to the base of the rock wool? The wicking action would keep the entire cube moist enough. Relying on an air stone would require the set up to be near an electrical outlet.

It's more like where should the water level b? You can't move the net pot, but you can adjust water level.
