A "Schreibwarenladen" in Düsseldorf I know is Marx-Kaufmann at Kölner Str. 291A. They are very friendly and they will also order things, if they don't have them. It is not a fancy shop, but they have a lot of stuff (not all on display, so ask them).

Woolworth is also a good option for most of the shopping - stationary, decorations, kitchen utensils, electronics etc

the Gartencenter is also open on Sundays in Aachen, I remember thinking Germans' idea of essential places to stay open on Sundays to be cute - bakeries and garden centres :D

We also have Budni in the northern part of Germany. (Budnikowsky is a German drugstore chain based in Hamburg. It is Germany's fourth largest drugstore retailer after dm-drogerie markt, Rossmann, and Müller.)

Moved to Germany last year.. I wish I could see this video before)) great stuff! I wouldn’t agree with some numbers though. I am trekking my expenses, so to furnish entire apartment/ 3 rooms incl all appliances, from cookware to stands for an acoustic system, we have spend ca. 17k. Only kitchen with good appliances by Bosch / Siemens medium range models - costed 8k euro. - I have built it by myself. Yes, the tools for that I had to buy as well)) it is never ending process . Be ready for that

I have been in Germany for around 4 months now and spent roughly €2,8k for furnishing a 41sqm apartment. Granted I didn't need to buy a kitchen as that come with the apartment and I was able to buy some stuff second hand from the tenant and the landlord (things left by former tenants). Probably my budget would be double if it included a decent kitchen (that is with a 4 plate stove, oven, hood, fridge and dishwasher). I'm still reeling at the size of the fridges. Very small. I think that budget is possible if one does the leg work of comparing prices for big appliances, shopping on sales, not going for popular brands and looking at the costs of shipping, installation etc. I was surprised how costly that can be with some companies like saturn, media markt and the likes.

Loved this video so much, and love Jen's examples of things and Yvonne's refusals (sorry but that was so funny lol). In my experience, the prices you gave are on point with what I spent last July but yet again I'm living fugally at the moment so like you said: it depends. But if the person is one that likes to install things it's not that bad, the only thing I got installed was my washer because I honestly couldn't figure out how to set it but the service was amazing (we even discussed the difficulties over coffee, like a good Dominican lol). Like always, good video

@@simplegermany Yeah the installation company was good, Ikea actually has a company that they hire to do the installation for appliances like the washer, they give an appointment and mine took like a week, and they profusely apologized about that (apparently it was a lot of time). But I do have to say that delivery was another history (i had to use my VERY limited german to complain), it's a funny story now, but it wasn't at the moment.

Ah interesting, so it was not installed by the deliverers but by a separate service team. Regarding your projector, there are also service providers to fix electronics. You could take a look at www.meinmacher.de/.

I really love your video 💖 Just two things I want to ask: 1. Say there's an apartament that you want to rent that has a kitchen that has tiles on the walls and floor. Is it reasonable to expect that the tiles stay, even if you don't buy the rest of the kitchen from the previuous tenant? 2. OK 'm not really asking, just voicing my opinion , but I think that your channel would really get so much more views if you added captions/subtitles to your videos. Lots of people watch youtube videos during work/commute without the sound on or just aren't that comfortable with spoken English.

I used myhammer for moving and payed as much as would pay just for the rental of the transporter, while here it came with two guys doing the heavy lifting for hours and the driving, so I gave them a nice tip and still made a great deal. If I can get a kitchen with an island, can I also get one that comes with a private jet? 🤣 The content was brilliant per usual. A larger chain dealing in office supplies and stationery was Staples. Unfortunately, it went bankrupt in mid-2022. There's still a Staples in my town, but it seems they're only selling leftovers. Since Amazon is basically already a monopolist in many areas, I try to avoid this store as much as possible. Amazon may be cheap now, but when it's pushed all the alternatives out of the market, it dictates the prices. This is not good for consumers.

Of course it is always easy to buy cheap furniture in Germany. But! There is SO MUCH furniture here in Germany which nobody uses anymore. It is okay to buy things second hand. And it is also okay to take furniture or things like dishes or ... anything out of the boxes people just put in front of their houses. For other people. I never really bought furniture. And I have everything I need. AND nobody ever says, that my apartment is not nice and comfortable. Gemütlich, you know. This is much more sustainable!

Top quality content as always! Since you mentioned the flea markets, do you think someone can get a good buy there for home goods, like second-hand furniture, lamps etc? What do you think about the flea markets in Düsseldorf?

Yeah, totally possible :). The one in Düsseldorf is quite big and on the weekends sometimes they have live music. So it's always a lot of fun to go there.

Noooo! You don't look for a Moebelhaus when you need furniture. You walk around the city and take what you find on the streets. Mostly with a sign "zu verschenken"" attached. It's a way better option than buying. When somebody used it for some time and it still is good enough to leave it on the street for somebody than it's a good piece of furniture. When I moved my family to Germany out of all furniture we took a bed and a fridge. And in Germany we bought a sofa, two stools and a wardrobe. Wardrobe is falling apart after less than a year, one stool broke apart after 2 months, the other one is twisted in some crazy way and I'm afraid to use it. But: a bookshelf, 2 chairs, 2 other stools, 2 coffetables, cupboard, scratching post, laundry basket, vacuum cleaner, fat-free fryer, beach basket, lawn mower and any other thing we found on the street are perfectly fine. And for free. I live that Germans get rid of cups and plates this way. My cats tend to break them quite often.

You can get an eye test as well as new glasses from an optician. There are some big chains such as Fielmann and Apollo-Optik, but you can also find more local opticians in your area. They would examine your eyes and recommend a certain lens. They also have frames you can choose from.

Not sure if you are referring to the Sperrmüll to dispose of old furniture. You can make a pick-up appointment for your street via your local trash company. We talk about it our guide and video on recycling 😊

Very informative and detailed! 3 months without a kitchen is a mighty long time. Someone moving from USA or UK would have a tough time because here apartmenta come loaded with a kitchen, ready to cook if you have the pots and pans. Is there a camping fridge as well ro use during this waiting period? Wondering what do people do about perishables that need to be kept in the fridge. Also is kaufhof the same as galleria ? If it is, then i read that it's unfortunately closing a lot of stores nationwide. Is there an alternative store or is online a better option?

Some opt for having a temporary camping kitchen in their apartment with a cool box with ice. If it's winter and cold enough, you can keep stuff outside on your balcony (if you have one). @@simplegermany it seems like a hard life for those 3 months! I hear things are changing as people demand furnished kitchens. Other than that, if there were businesses to rent kitchen appliances and some cabinets from for short term, that could bridge the gap, make money and make settling in the new apartment easier. May be they exist may be they don't... But i wish they do.

It surprises me that fitted units like kitchens are not included within the tenancy as installing and then removing it at the end of the tenancy will require a good deal of making good to the flat, which is very difficult to rectify in tiling say. Besides, once fitted removing a kitchen often results in the units themselves requiring considerable repair especially as they are not designed like furniture to be moved around. Some kitchen styles use free standing units that are considered furniture so can be installed by the tenant but because a kitchen has various services - gas, electric, water, drainage installation skill is required.

I'd argue German kitchens are actually built with removal and moving in mind, at least I have so far never heard from anyone that their kitchen needed repair after moving. In the end, a kitchen is just another part of furniture to Germans, just like light fixtures. It's something that you want to look the way you like, so you take it with you when you move and the new place allows for it. After all, chances are high the next tenant does not share your taste in kitchen design and would get rid of the kitchen anyway lol

@@leDespicable My German family and friends all have built-in, made on the spot cupboards with separate appliances so that they would not be salvageable and the German kitchen like Poggenphl is built in and uses classic laminated chipboard that does not take well to disassemblym and besides as they are built in are unlikely to fit in a new location, notwithstanding that they will be worn. Kitchens and bathrooms are now the popular 'make over' items

@@karinland8533 Adding a fitted kitchen can be viewed as a desirable addition or an extra expense by developers who have to balance cost against the letting potential. As a landlord in UK, I would rather spec a good looking kitchen to attract tenants than have the hassle of tenant installed kitchens that then need removal at the end of the tenancy, hopefully by the tenant. As many tenancies are for just a few years I could see that many tenants would object to the cost for a short period use only then to have the trouble to sell on after and repair the kitchen.

What if I want to stick to non-German brands of kitchen appliances I'm used to? I've had good experience with Samsung and LG, and they are a lot cheaper than German brands, at least when both groups are imported.
