This was very informational and I hope it helps people! The best is adoption but unfortuantly when getting toffee I got him from a breeder who had them on wire floors and outdoors 😢. They were gonna keep him for breeding but I ended up with him instead. Even tho he isn't adopted I love him. And in the case of hopefully getting a friend for him when he's fixed I will look into adoption. OR craigslist.Craigslist was where I got my hamster who is no longer with me now. Anyways xoxo love u Hailey😗

I got one bunny from a small pet store and one from an agility show breeder. Me first choice was a shelter but the shelter in my town does not carry rabbits. I have been viciously attacked by people after telling them where I got my buns and they say you’re a terrible person unless you get one from a shelter. Sorry not sorry for wanting babies instead of an old sick scared rabbit. Because I raised my buns starting around 2 months old, my rabbits are very social and not scared of very much. I do not regret not traveling far out to find and old sick rabbit. In the future I’d love to foster rabbits, but I will never feel bad about where I got my rabbits and I will never tell someone that they HAVE to rescue a rabbit. Just because a pet shop exists doesn’t automatically mean the rabbits come from a horrific situation. If you don’t know, then don’t judge which is what most people wanna do on the internet and ATTACK anyone who does that.

My first bun came from an accidental litter. Very unexpected but the best decision ever because my Yuki is such an angel. Her husbun comes from a local rescue. I had a hard time hearing back from some of the rescues which was discouraging but we found a great rescue and took Yuki on bunny dates to pick her husbun. She did indeed find one she likes and that's how we brought Haku home! They are adorable together and if I ever find myself in the position to get another one I will definitely be going the rescue route again. Thanks so much for your videos as they have helped me so much with my buns! 💜🐇🐰

I appreciate the fact that you rescued them but they should not live in a exercise pen they should be roaming around your house and if need you can put them In a exercise pen at night but you should not leave your bunny in a cage in the day at all so you are a bad rabbit owner😞

@@annabellesings946 The exercise pen is bigger that some rooms and they get to free roam all day. For as long as I have owned them they have never been locked in a cage because an exercise pen is really not considered a cage.

So my neighbor had zero interest in the rabbit, but felt bad for the rabbit, because she's i so loving. I ended up taking her in and i builted a new pen for her. Im so happy i took her in, she loves to cuddle and allways comes running, when i come.

I had the same issue when I got my first bunny that I was turned away from adopting due to my age. I will say though that adopting isnt always the best option either, at least for first time bun owners just because they can be much more difficult to work with than a baby bun. My harlequin is a rescue and she came from a home where she was very neglected. When they got her at the shelter, she was extremely overweight, had immaciated muscle mass, and she had a leision on the back of her neck. My impression is that she was kept in a small cage, was never handled or let out for exercise, and overfed. Despite all this, I fell in love with her and took her home to be a companion for my male holland. She is the most difficult rabbit I have ever worked with. Almost every day for about a year, I had to work with her on being handled, and picked up. She was terrified of being picked up and would kick me endlessly. Because I had to hold her close to me to keep her from hurting herself, my whole body was always covered in scratches. It has been two years since I brought her home and Im proud to say that I have gotten her to a point where she will tolerate being held for a couple minutes, enough to get her from point A to B. She has free reign of my apartment and loves her two bun brothers. Although I did have success with her, Ive been keeping rabbits for 11 years and I dont think most first time bun owners wouldve been able to give her the training she needed.

I got my baby buns from a backyard breeder cause my neighbors had 2 bunnies and they had babies so I got the 2 females and their 2 bothers are I think still looking for a home. The father is living outside with chickens I think and he is a black and white, very very big lop. The mother is I think a flemish giant cuz how big she is and she is white with brown ears and I think one or two spots on her back. The 2 bothers and their mom are living outside in a hutch while my buns are living inside in a 2 floor hutch cuz we have cats so they have to be in a cage but we do let them out to play. I do hope their bothers find a really good home with someone who is rabbit edicated, and I do wish the rabbits were to live inside case it's becoming winter here. Love u Haley and thxs for making a rabbit care channel, with out this channel who knows what I would be doing to my lil babies. 🐰🐰💗

In New York City it is illegal for *anyone* to sell rabbits. The only way to legally get a rabbit in NYC is adoption. Once that law went into effect, city shelters no longer needed to put rabbits down due to over crowding. We adopted our bunny from a rescue that made sure we were well educated in rabbit care before we took her home. It’s the best and only option imo.

My bun, thumper, was 6 months old when we got him, we went to a little pet shop called Rovers Return to get a hamster, I walked past him and he gave me the eye. So I met the hamsters and they were that scared of them they picked them up with a scoop🤦‍♀️ So one of the hamsters bit me so I decided I didn’t want one. Then as we went to leave I walked past him again and he thumped at me, when I asked why he was in a bad mood they said that his friends had been sold ( he was housed In a cage with 6 Guinie pigs ) and I felt bad for him. They said that he had been there all his life. When I asked why he didn’t sell, they said “he’s too big, everybody wants the baby’s” The funny thing is he was a pure bred Holland lop and they were rexes, so they grew bigger than him anyway. When I asked how much he was, they shoved him on me for free😡 we ended up buying a cage and dishes. For £70 they didn’t even sell pellets so we had to go to pets at home to get pellets. Disgusting R.I.P Thumper xxx❤️🥕

My first 2 rabbits I did get off craigslist. Both came from nice homes. At that time I didn't know there was a rescue in my state. Later after doing a search I found the only rescue in my state and adopted my last rabbit from there. I would only adopt from the rescue in the future if I decide to get another rabbit.

My first bun was from a farm auction. While the other rabbits were babies or meat rabbits, he was 4months old, litter trained, and fixed! It seemed like his family didn't want him anymore, but still cared about him as he was in a decent sized temporary cage with water and bedding (most other animals were in crates so small they couldn't move). I saw him and needed him, so I got into a bidding war! 140$ later, my boy is a mostly free range bun, spoiled to pieces. My girl was from the same auction, but was bought by a friend for her daughter. Daughter got bored of bunny in a week, so now she lives here with me! I wasn't going to let her go to another family that would do the same thing. Long story I have two happy spoiled bunnies, and have no regrets about getting them, and while I don't feel great about getting them from an auction (since I dont know their background), I wouldn't trade them for anything 🧡

I got two mini lops from a professional breeder and they’re both very caring and gave lots of advice before parting. Even before we left they told us we could message even 6 months later about rabbit care! I feel bad saying they’re from professional breeder because of the stigma. It’s been about a couple of days since they’re home and they’ve settled in nicely :)

All three of my bunnies were rescued from people I know (via Facebook). Two of them were spayed and had previously been in the rspca, and the other was a friend who had breed her rabbit and decided she could no longer keep her, so I got her and her mum. Sadly her mum passed away not long after due to ill health. Since then I have spayed the daughter and bonded her with my other girls. I wouldn’t change how I got my bunnies as I love them so much, just wish they hadn’t have had poor care before as they definitely didn’t deserve it 💙💙💙

But not for like a year because I might have to wait until we move house because I don’t have space in my room and I also have to save up some money for it and I’m only 13 so it may take a while, but I’ll get there! 🙂🐰💖

I liked that you shared your opinion about this topic and it's really good. My first bunny I got from some people who had dogs that barked at their bunny and hated it so I got the bunny. I had no clue what I was doing at first but I got my act together, and did LOTS of research.and my bunny ended up just being like a dog free roam in my house. I feel like I did save her/not really a her but keep reading.... because her old owners fed her bread only, barley had water, cage was disgusting, never been out of it's cage for I'd have to say it's entire life. Also when i did get "her" i was told it was a her, and found out it wasn't, i was told it was a lion head, it's not it's a mini lop, and lastly the age, I was told he was bout maybe 2 years old, guess what he wasn't, I can't be positive of how old he really was , but he was a old guy okay, and a year after i got him he died ): ... But I knew I gave him the best last year of his life, his name is daisy because I though he was a she, he died 10-23-18. My bunny now that I've gotten recently is named Teo And he is a boy for sure, and a lop eared. also about 4 months old. I did though get him from a store called Buchheit, But only because the bunnies they had that they had gotten were born in a barn, Teo the one I got when I seen him he had cuts on his ear and was super terrified which I would understand, but none of the other bunnies born in the barn were as so terrified as him, so I just had to get him, He's doing great now, and isn't as scared or shy, but it's still there. I'm working with him and with how terrified he is of people and how shy he is.

Hook's Hollands is a reputable breeder. Even though I don't necessarily agree with breeding rabbits in general, she takes good care of her rabbits. Also I got my rabbit from a Christmas tree farm a little over 6 years ago. I didn't really know much about rabbit rescues or why it's better to get rabbits from shelters/rescues because I was unaware of the surrender rate of rabbits and the overpopulation of rabbits. I'm happy I have him and I love him so much, but I definitely want to get rabbits from rescues/shelters in the future to give a home to rabbits who need one. Also a previous rabbit we rescued from someone who was living outside my family's neighborhood (but close by). It was around Easter and this family bought this rabbit for their kids I believe. Our next door neighbor said they saw the family putting the rabbit in a small (~1 foot tall) recycling bin and only giving the rabbit carrots and no water... well inevitably the rabbit got out of the bin and wandered into our yard. We believe he was a dwarf Himalayan mix. We took him in and those people never found him... I don't really know if this was legal, but I regret nothing. He was in much better care after that and he probably wouldn't have lived more than a few months with those people he escaped from.

I foster bunnies for a rescue in Utah. PLEASE adopt a bunny don’t buy! I have a bunny family right now (a mama and her 4 babies) that the shelter turned over to the rescue because they couldn’t deal with them. The babies were 2 days old and the mama was terrified. The mom is now doing fantastic and I love her so much that I’m going to adopt her myself. Her name is Patty Cakes. The babies are now 13 weeks old, and are healthy and very happy. All of them run to me when they see me and are very people friendly. Bunnies that have been home fostered tend to be very well cared for and comfortable with people and other pets.

I didn’t get my rabbit from a breeder, but I didn’t get Bun Bun from a shelter either... my mom was on Facebook and she saw this video of a bunny and it said that the bunny needs a home, because the persons cat didn’t get along with the bunny. I obviously researched everything about rabbits and found out when I took her to the vet the next day that she was about 4 weeks possibly less. I love her to death but I’ve spent a lot of money on her, close to $1,000. I need to spay her soon since she’s about 6 months now. I’m glad I saved her, those people that were selling her didn’t care to give them what they need! After I spay her I will adopt a friend for her at a shelter.

@MIraculousGurl because of their terrible conditions when being bred and shipped to the shop. So many die in transit. Often taken away from mum way too early and bred with no thought to genetics, just mass breeding for profit.

I got mine from a pet store! Yes I know adoption is the best thing to do! But it’s was during Easter week (no he was not a Easter gift of mine) but there was a lot of young kids there in line for the rabbits! And the only adoption Place with rabbits is about 12 hours from my house! But my rabbit has a amazing life and I love him so much!

I think that no matter where you get your bunny you shouldn’t be ashamed. I got my bunny from a breeder and she takes amazing care of the bunnies. I’m not ashamed to say I went to a breeder. Love you bunny no matter what. It’s not where you come from it’s where you belong. Every bunny needs a home.

I definitely believe that the best place to purchase a rabbit is from a quality breeder esp show breeders. Rabbit shows are a great place to purchase a rabbit. Good! breeders know how to properly care for them and many bring pet quality rabbits to shows to sell. Rabbit shows give you the option to choose from the many different breeds. Quality breeders usually keep their rabbitries nice and clean. Adopting a pet rabbit from a shelter is great if!!! they know how to properly care for rabbits and know what's best for them as with feedings and housing. Also how to handle a rabbit properly.

One of the ones I think is the worst is chain farming equipment stores. They're not considered a pet store so they can still have rabbits. When I went to one near me the baby rabbits were very sick, I told the cashier and she said "Oh, we're switching them out soon any way." I wish I could've taken them... It's horrible. 😡

The problem is a lot of the people who are watching this are people who are researching and are caring about the well-being of the rabbits and not just impulse buying, and that's great but... The people who usually support the bad options are people who are impulse buying and doing no research so they wouldn't see this Anyway is still think it is great that she has done this and I am sure this has reached someone who otherwise would be getting a bunny from the wrong place. Actually, X-pens are great for bunnies! I got a 36in (tall) X-pen by Frisco for $36 on Chewy.com. Obviously, you want to let your bunny out of the pen as much as possible (with supervision), but yes, X-pens make great bunny pens. However, they can be dangerous for babies if they are able to fit their heads through the bars.

Great video Haley! :) What standards do you feel a breeder should meet, to be an ethical option? I'd love to adopt, but I'd also be happy to support someone raising them "right."
@101rabbits
@101rabbits 5 лет назад
My personal opinion is I feel there are hundreds of thousands of rabbits being put down in shelters because of overpopulation because of how quickly rabbits breed. Because of that I feel there is always a need to rescue or adopt and I don’t want to contribute to more rabbits or rabbits having to die because they can’t find homes. I also have such a heart for rescuing that it’s the path I will always go with rabbits. I don’t necessarily have that opinion for all animals, but for rabbits especially I do. :) I’ve also never in my life seen a rabbit breeder who houses their bunnies indoors, gives them love and attention, houses them in large cages/pens, feeds a proper diet, proper vet care, and I also think spaying is vitally important as females have a 85% chance of developing uterine cancer by the age of 2 and the chance increases with age. So in my opinion, it’s just so hard for me to ever see an ethical breeder. 🤷🏼‍♀️
@MWepex
@MWepex 5 лет назад
My wife and I love your content. I see your point, I have family that does dog rescue. I also grew up in the horse culture and have family that has bred hunting dogs, so I have a bit broader perspective. Adoption should never stop but it is onesided and reactionary as a sole strategy. Unethical breeders profit from producing more volume. If more people adopt instead of buying from them, they will make up the difference with more volume. Unethical breeders need to be converted/educated or pushed out by ethical breeders. Three prong strategy, adoption, education, and ethical breeding. If no ethical breeders exist you, Haley, have the platform to set the standard correctly to fill that vacuum. Set that standard high, instead of 'it isn't or can't be done', it should be 'although difficult, this is how it should and can be done'.

So, all the youtube videos I've watched, the person gives 94 different varieties of veggies to their bunny, all quite expensive. My question is, is it absolutely crucial that I give my future bunny tons of variety? What's the best diet for someone on a bit of a budget?
@stormthebabe49
@stormthebabe49 5 лет назад
It can be, yes. My bunnies love variety. I suggest getting large heads of things like romaine (when it's safe to eat), kale, red leaf, green leaf, etc. When you feed the proper amount of veggies for your bunny (if you also feed Oxbow essential pellets), it's not really that expensive. There are many lists out there on which veggies are safe for buns, how much should be fed daily/weekly, and more. 101Rabbits' feeds only veggies to her buns, so for her, it is pretty expensive. I saw your other comment, which I replied to, so I know a little about your situation. I'd say, from what I can tell from your comments, that you need to do a bit more research on bunnies before getting one. I think it's great you came to 101Rabbits' channel since she does have really good care tips, but I think you should do a bit more research. Getting a bunny is a big responsiblity, and not something you want to rush into. I've done pretty extensive research on bunnies, so if you have any more questions for me, you can reply to this comment or DM me on IG (@storm_the_babe), so that we don't clog up Hailey's comment section.

I have done a lot of research, but I'm sure there is room for improvement in the 2 months I'm preparing for her. I'm too young to get a part time job just yet, so I'm basically relying on birthday, christmas, chore and the occasional babysitting job for money. I'm totally aware that these animals are expensive. I'm totally aware that they live 9-12 years if happy. And, I'm totally aware of basically everything else. I know that you're supposed to have two bunnies, and I do plan on getting a second one when I am old enough to get a part time job. Thank you for the information. Ill try my absolute best.

@@TheLuci915 I'm glad that you know all of this information! I'm sorry if I came off as rude when I suggested that you do more research, I wasn't trying to be rude, I was just a little concerned. I've seen a lot of questions like these in her comment section, where people don't know anything about rabbits, and talk about getting one in a month or a week or something. I just wanted to make sure that, if you didn't know, to do more research. From what I can tell, I think you'll be a very good home for a bunny.
