Where To Sit With a Walking Cane at a Restaurant for Safety (Tutorial) 

One thing I always do when I go into a new place is to walk around and find all the exits. I also look at how clean the restroom and kitchen are but that's a quality issue, not safety. lol Other then that it's back to a wall where I can see the front doors and/or windows of the restaurant. I like to keep an eye on whats happening outside because you never know when something from outside might come crashing in.

The basic concept I’ve had about the ideal table to sit at in a public establishment overall from the time I was little, cane or other self defense implement at hand or not (taken from examples in supposed anecdotal stories of fights in the Old West and the suggestions of a few military veterans who may or may not have actually been involved in a few barroom brawls), is away from windows and front door but in a spot that gives you as good as possible of a vantage point seeing the door and out of the windows, towards the back so you can have the best vantage point of the whole place, as much as possible, and with your back against a wall so you can’t get jumped from behind. One thing I was cautioned against doing though, despite what the previous advice implies, is sitting in a corner because you could very easily get “painted into” that corner and thus become actually an easier target or picked off before you can make it to an exit if projectile attacks are involved.

Gosh he sounds just like Jack Reacher......
