The Wherehouse was a record store chain that also rented movies at most of its stores (they still have stores in some areas, but not nearly ... all » as many as there used to be.) This commercial aired in the Las Vegas area and shows many popular movies available in 1981- pre-recorded tapes were usually priced around $50, so more people opted to rent them rather than buy (those who wanted their own copies but didn't want to pay the price would hook 2 VCRs together and make copies.)
The Wherehouse carried titles in both VHS and Beta; many of their stores still rented Beta as late as 1989-1990. All the tapes shown in this commercial appear to be Beta; the shot of someone loading "The Elephant Man" into the Betamax at the end is rather curious since the VCR looks like one of the first-generation models, if it is then it couldn't play the tape at the proper speed since all pre-recorded movie tapes were in Beta II! While this could still be one of the first machines to include Beta II speed capability, it is still quite old for 1981. Not everyone owned a VCR yet at the time though!

I loved growing up in the early '80s. When I was a kid, my family rented movies like crazy and I was under the impression that you would eventually own a tape if you rented it enough. The first VCR I ever had for myself was a used VHS top-loader I received in 1990.

I have the 1981 VHS of "Airplane!" shown in this ad. I was very surprised to find it on the shelf of a goodwill store here in town.

I worked at The Wherehouse on Sports Arena, and in the Mission Valley Mall in San Diego from 1984 to 1989. Great times and my favorite job I ever had! 🎉

Last Wherehouse stores I roamed were one from San Luis Obispo, CA 2002 and the last was Santa Maria, CA in 2007. Send me back.

"The Wherehouse",gives me great memories in the '80s to mid '90s.Still remember buying 7" & 12" records during the last years of the 1980s.Does anyone remember "Music plus" and shopping mall's,"Sam Goody's". I think this month and year the great,"Tower Records",finally closed its doors for good 3 years ago(miss Towers).

Wow, $2 a day in 1981?? And people complained about Redbox when it raised its DVD rental rate to $1.50 a year ago.

For me, nothing smells nostalgia than record store TV spots! See the address, this must of been shown in Las Vegas.

For fun, I went to see what is currently at these locations. A Chinese Restaurant A Bagel Chain. Surprisingly, The Boulevard is still open. The video store is not, though. It branded as more an Amusement Center than Mall.

I felt weird renting those too- they charged a ridiculous premium for those though. The store in Davis CA had regular movies at $1.50 per day, while pornos were $3.99!

And, yes, it could play Beta II speed. One of the first models to do so.

But notice how the movies mentioned were so much better than all the disposable ones today (like Dreamworks crud).

@studmufinn Hey, I worked at the Wherehouse too in Whittier...from 1984-1985. My first job, and it was quite an experience, lol! Very cool job. Maybe you were at Whittier location at same time I was. BTW, you are right. It was sex, drugs and lots of rock 'n roll!

calchick82 My dad took me with him to work during the summer. The other employees made no complaint seeing I was kicking some ass putting away the videos and helping customers. And I was only in elementary school.

2$ a day is too expensive at that time. no wonder they went out of business!

At the time some places were charging as high as $10 to rent a movie for anight. Most charged $5. So $2 seemed like a deal. If one were to purchase (not rent) Star Wars back then, for example, it cost $75 in the early 1980s. So purchase and rental prices were very high.

Considering they didn't go out of business for more than 20 years after this commercial aired, I highly doubt this video rental price is why they shut down.
