The three most important rules for interpreting Scripture: 1. Context. 2. Context. 3. Context.

Truth! That verse is so deeply embedded in pop Christianity you hear it all the time! I tried, years ago…to gently remind someone of this very misuse and they reacted almost savagely! I was the Pharisee “straining at a gnat!” Thank you for speaking our Lord’s Word accurately.

The strangest point being that Christ promises to be with us individually also and it is not dependant on our being near or inagreement with others. John 14:23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

Excellent point!!! When someone truly knows scripture . . . to memorize "a verse" is only meant to remind you of the entire section of that storyline. Example: to say, "talking donkey" or "Balaam's donkey" - should cause you to recall at least rough details of portions of that episode, "Ah, I think there's an angel involved" - well, that's a start, then go back & reread all of it to understand the whole account & what are we to learn from this. This particularly gets irritating for me with John 3:16 being the most popular verse in the NT & yet so few people recall anything else about chapter 3 - which is really a dark & difficult explanation of sins corruption upon the world & how readily acceptable it has become among people of the world but Jesus wants to shine His light back into the world - people just can't truly grasp the depth of the intended meaning so they simply latch on to the only bright spot in the whole chapter. "An eye for an eye" is another one - originally intended for harm caused to a pregnant woman & if the unborn baby was severely injured as a result. People like to compare that to Jesus saying "turn the other cheek" WHAT?!!! Please, correct me if I'm wrong. Perhaps you could do another short video in these two.

I sometimes use it in a prayer when opening sunday service- goes somewhat like this "We pray by Your promise to be wherever 2 or 3 are gathered together, come be among us today". So, would you say this is a miss?

could i ask what is really meant by do not forsake the gathering of yourselves together in Hebrews? Many use this as do not forsake to attend church. but is this what the verse is referring to?
@Liminalplace1
@Liminalplace1 22 дня назад
But,if the point is the authority of Christ rather than his guidance, then isn't that authority applicable to a prayer? I mean "Christians" might be making an application of that verse rather than. Interpretation of the verse itself. But they will mistakenly think they are interpreting the passage. That is true of many scriptures eg. "I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me"

With God all things are possible… some things are ok to use out of context. I think it depends on which context you put them in to
@HB_IE52829

I would also not say, that we Christians have a bad habit to quote out of context. We have the wonderful habit to try to live by the book and Gods word and while we are transformed from glory to glory and grow in His word, we might make mistake.

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18‬:‭20‬ ‭ESV‬‬ This pasaje says it all, and the context doesn’t alter nor condition its meaning. As you say in the beginning: It is true what Christian’s confess , but you missed a key detail “gathered in Jesus name, which is above all names.

@donvictor2562 "This pasaje says it all, and the context doesn’t alter nor condition its meaning." What is the meaning of the word, "cool"? Does it mean: A relatively low temperature? A manner of dress and behavior that some find admirable? An attitude? Agreement? Approval? "You'll need a sweater if you are going out, Tom. It's going to be rather cool this evening." "Dude! That's a waaay cool hat you're wearing!" "The words of her greeting were welcoming, but her demeanor was decidedly cool." Tom: "I'll pick you up around 8." Fred: "Cool." "I saw your new car. Cool." Context does not alter or condition meaning. It DETERMINES meaning.

@@Packhorse-bh8qn agree on what you said as well, and yet what the context determines regarding this particular verse, is not going to be other thing, even if we read the verse unattached to its context. Including the Great importance of the Name of Jesus.

Chad, this is indeed the wrong example to talk about "out of context". Mat 18:20 is generally true. If 2 or more come together in His name, which means as a community in Christ, then Christ is with them and that statement is made in verse 20 because it is true without any further context, but also applies here You can see that also when reading Mat 28:20. It is just mentioned as a reminder. The context does not matter at all and every believer is totally right to quote Mat18:20 when you come together in His name, especially because it is true without further definition of the context. It might be prayer, eating, breaking of bread, bible study, helping others in Christ name, you name it.
@brianpace3837
@brianpace3837 28 дней назад
Exactly. Jesus is with us when we gather. It does not matter if we are dealing with a problematic brother, or just having Bible study fellowship. To make this distinction does not make sense. As you said, no further context is needed. Jesus is with His people.

Do you remember the words saying "2 or more"? I am heavily affected by what is known as "The Mandela Effect" and I have seen elements of reality change in an instant ... (e.g. famous logos, the Thinker statue etc). I know the world is not as it seems and I believe the most significant changes are in the Bible. Mat 18:20 is one of these changes as the text used to say 2 or more but now says 2 or 3. Isaiah 11:6 used to say "the lion shall lie down with the lamb" but now it is "the wolf shall dwell with the lamb". I do not wish to cause any problems and I am genuinely curious as to your specific memory in this regard as so few people seem to be able to see the changes. (My personal observations of these changes has led me to an unshakable faith in Jesus Christ in spite of - or indeed because of - these changes in my reality).
