Which 2020 Toyota TRD Pro is The Off-Road King the 4Runner or Tacoma?

What was once twins in the Toyota showroom, the 2020 #ToyotaTacoma & #Toyota4Runner have grown to become more like cousins because the #TacomaTRDPro was moved onto a newer platform back in 2016. For 2020, both the #Tacoma and #4RunnerTRDPro get nice updates that include a new head unit that finally includes Apple CarPlay AND Android Auto... a first for a new Toyota product. Both trucks cost about $45,000 but which one is actually the better off-road truck?

No doubt about it. Toyota 4Runner TRDPRO is a true king of off-road trucks/SUV’s. Because it’s the only true Japanese SUV that’s capable of off-road, very dependable, very reliable that’s major zero problems because it’s 100% Japan made. Besides land cruiser, sequoia, and tundra, Tacoma TRDPRO and 4Runner TRDPRO are both best truck and SUV ever. So again, 4Runner is a must

I test drove both. I picked the Tacoma. Just felt like it handled way better on road which is where it will spend most of it's life. It was quieter as far as wind noise.Engine felt much more powerful getting up to speed. The dash and features were more modern. Though the 4Runners old school knobs had a charm to them and felt very quality. Infotainment was a wash between them. I liked the overall looks of the 4Runner better. but I picked the Tacoma due to the usefulness of the bed. I ended up buying the TRD Offroad version though as it had the features I needed without the price of the Pro. Hard to pick between the two. test drive of both is needed and you can't go wrong either way. just pick depending on personal needs. Honestly it comes down to needing or wanting suv or truck.

Nelson Santiago and I also agree with u. 8 speed would be much better, update the 4.0L V6 like the Camry does. 325 hp and 345 ibs pounds of torque. And it be much better.

Unfortunately the 4Runner doesn't come with a six speed manual so that means it now leaves us enthusiasts with no other choice but to go with a taco only. Which is not bad but would have been an added advantage for the 4Runner to increase its sales figures and a manual is much better if you are taking this in for some serious off-roading trails, because in some extreme conditions the departure angle of the 4RUNNER would be much helpful when compared to that of the Taco.

GPS in the Tacoma is better for 2020. However, the screen... like they went backward instead of forward. Lots of glare. And the gears have been shortened. I had a 17 before my 20 and I thought it was a good idea to shorten gear 6. BUT, it breaks in good. I was getting 26 on the highway at 65mph with the longer gear 6. But now it's back down to 21-22 with the shorter gear. However the army green paint. Worth every penny lol

I need some advice, I’m stuck between getting a Tacoma and a 4Runner, I enjoy hiking, biking and going on road trips , the biggest deciding factor for me is interior space and cargo room, just thought I’d ask someone and get there thoughts from it, just been having some trouble deciding what will be best for me, also just fyi I am a 19 year old , so I don’t have any kids to hall around I’d just be halling friends as well as a bicycle and everything else id need to hike and go on long road trips and etc.

I’ve always had a small part of me temped to buy a 4Runner TRD Pro over the years. I often take my 2014 explorer then 2018 Explorer on the beach and I deal with snow where I live so a TRD is appealing. Unfortunately not only does the 4Runner lack in interior luxury when compared to my explorers, I hate how Toyota doesn’t at least offer an engine upgrade for more power. The TRD May be very capable off road and their tow capacity of 5,000 pounds may be true but based on my experience towing a 4,800 LB pound boat/trailer it certainly felt like I was over my max towing capacity. It also legitimately feels underpowered. I’ve always liked the TRD look and off road capabilities but they really need a new engine to keep up with the rest of the SUVs in class. I know if they did that I would quite possibly be a new Toyota buyer.

@fender @ 2011 4Runner on 3"OME, SCS wheels, Prinsu rack, etc...Toyota needs to keep up with the times, better MPG, tech and torque. The incremental changes and increase in pricing isn't incentivizing.

@fender I agree that they are of higher quality. I traded an F150 with endless expensive issues I bought new for the 4runner in 2011, the only thing that has failed since new were the rear lift gate struts which was an easy inexpensive fix. Its a great wheeling truck too, I just would like to see some more innovation in the truck segment✌🏼

Love the 4Runner, but bought the 2020 Pro Taco due to 6MT option. Why guys don’t talk more about what a difference (and huge improvement IMO) the MT option makes over the AT-only 4R is beyond me. Go drive a 3.5 MT Taco vs a 4.0 AT 4Runner and I guarantee anyone that truly loves the driving experience will pick the Taco all day long. God save the MT...the vast majority of drivers these days have no idea what they are missing by not learning to drive w/ a 3rd pedal!

I just drove the both of them, and I still wish theTacoma had the 4.0 with the manual. With the stick it feels like driving a big car instead of a truck with that 3.5

I plan on sleeping in the car when I'm out in the forest overnight, I've read that with the rear seat gone the 4runner has more space to sleep then the 5' foot bed of the tacoma, but the tacoma gets better mpg and a bit more hp. I'm around 5'10 and it would be just me, no one else.

the 4runner has a smoother ride because it uses rear coilovers instead of leaf springs. The Tacoma needs leaf springs for towing & hauling (it is a pickup truck after all...).

I'm glad Toyota went back to a manual transfer case with the 5th gen 4Runner (they'd made the mistake of going electronic with the 4th gen) but this video mostly solidified my position that I'll probably never own one of these newer vehicles. I don't need or want all these "luxury" items and features like massive touch screens or remote starts. I don't want buttons everywhere. I don't want automated features that do half the driving for you. For me, those are just a waste of money that drive up the cost. They change the driving experience to something I don't want, and they are becoming much more difficult to fix on the trail. I'll stick with my Xterra, something that was extremely affordable, has more torque than either of these two vehicles, lets ME do all the driving, and doesn't have an interior that's covered in lights and buttons and screens. The only real complaint I have about it is the electric transfer case. It will get me anywhere these two can go, and while Nissan may not be as well known for reliability as Toyota my X still has tons of life left, and when it finally dies one day I'll be able to replace it with another solid Xterra several times over before I've spent as much as I would on just one 4Runner or Tacoma (although when this engine does finally kick the bucket I'm tempted to just do a diesel swap...). I really wish that these new vehicles would have a bare bones analog option, but unfortunately I'm in the minority, everyone just wants ease and comfort nowadays
