Finally found a good introduction to binoculars! Most websites I have read just explain what the numbers are, but don’t explain how much magnification and lens diameter do I need. I’m a complete beginner and just want to get a closer look at the magpies that are around my home. I can probably just get a 8x25 and be done with it.

Ive owned Leica 8x42 Trinovid BN , 8x32 Trinovid BN , 8x42 and 10x32 Ultravids , Hawke Frontier 10x42 , Bushnell Natureview 8x42 , Viking Vistron 10x42 , Viking Peregrine 10x42 , RSPB Puffin 8x32 and looked through many variations of the Swarovski ELs and Zeiss Conquest and FLs as well as Nikon High grade lights . The best binocular for the money that i currently own and use , are the 8x42 Kowa BD11 . They are stunning . Bright , incredible field of view and close focus , and fantastic build quality.

I have just been looking at the 8x42 Kowa BD11 bins before ending up here! ... impressive glass spec & magnesium alloy body to boot...

@@peternicholls6532 they are superb . The field of view is massive and so bright and sharp . For that money you won't get better .

Best purchase I ever made was buying a shoulder harness and toss the neck strap. Takes the weigh off your neck and distributes across shoulders.
@TheSavagederek

Great if you suffer from neck issues , but they hang too low for my liking . Most modern bins are light enough to remain comfortable for a full days use , with a good quality , wide neoprene strap .

as they say if you want a good pair you need to pay a lot of money and then you will be more than satisfied.

That's true. I know because I did it. In 2/23 I purchased a pair of Sig Sauer 16 power x 42 mm IMAGE STABILIZING BINOCULARS. They operate for many weeks using only one AA Battery. Canons require 2 AA's. The Sig Sauers are not cheap as all Image Stabilizers are costly. But what price can you put on your eye sight. Viewing through inferior optics can damage your eyesight. I am Not being paid or compensated by Sig Sauer in any way. Just trying to help other birders. Dan

@@DanielHHurt I think equating cheaper binoculars with eyesight damage is stretching things; possible eyestrain from extended binocular use is temporary, if it occurs. It's true though, some of the top end binoculars are fabulous.

Disagree . The current cost of the top end stuff at well over 2 grand is disgusting . When i bought my Leica Ultravids back around 10 years ago , they were £870 and i could have got the Swarovski EL which was slightly more expensive at £920. They are both now £1600 or more . I bought a pair of Kowa BD 11 binoculars , valued at £450 for £370 from the Viking optical shop in Edinburgh, Scotland back in October last year . Theres no way on Earth theres £12-1400 of a rise in quality . You are paying a massive premium for a bloody name and badge .

Not clear. Is this a sales pitch for RSPB brand binoculars?
@wren5291
@wren5291 Год назад
Looks like, but also an in-road for those who don't know where to start. There's some good info for people to begin their research - they don't necessarily have to buy from RSPB.

@@hwood9783 Yes they do, but they don't show any other brand than their own in the video. Watch the video, they show the brand badge all the time. Its a sales pitch for their own brand. Nothing more.

I think people are being unfair here. Obviously the binoculars they’ve got most readily to hand for the video are their own brand. They do sell other ones, they’re not exclusive at all. The advice is general and says you need to find the binoculars that are right for you. Not ‘We’ve got a wide range with something to suit everyone’. If this video is a sales pitch for their own brand, it’s a pretty poor sales pitch!

I’m so sorry , I have mentioned this previously, X 8 is ok for gardens but X7 is better. You haven’t discussed fov. I am a member but you have failed to give an objective overview. You haven’t discussed Prorro or roof prism binoculars. So sorry …..bless you. May I make a useful suggestion, go to the Celestron site , they explain all. I love your site and everything you do but this presentation is inadequate to say the least. Look, for a garden 7x35. For a further distance 8x 42. Bless you .

I’m sorry, the best birding binoculars must have a FOV over 8. 7x35 binoculars are better than 8x42 for reasons of mathematical optical calculation ; Of course, that is for every day garden birding. Sorry but your optic calculations are flawed. Kind regards.

I’m sorry. I have left a scientific overview of your presentation that some of your viewers are at odds with. Full apology. Scientifically you , bless you , are wrong. Please, I invite you to read your A level Physics notes. God bless.

I’m sorry but your video stated that x10 is fine for open spaces…..it’s not because of hand shake and field of view. If you increase magnification you reduce field of view ( subject to criteria). Sorry, you have to go back to O level maths regarding field of view. The calculation is complex. Mathematically your summarising is flawed. However great video. Kind regards.

Would you recommend a young amateur to use a 35 x 7 Fisher Dietz brand? I see them commonly for sale about $30 second hand. Think they were made in Japan in the 80s.
