What is the best type of bedding to use in my Chicken Coop?
If your chickens appear to be suffering from respiratory problems or if your hen house is unduly smelly, it might be time to review the bedding you are using.
Maybe you are new to keeping hens and don't know where to start as the choices seem endless and advice often contradicts.
In #AskPhill 5 of our video series, Phill describes the different poultry bedding options available, what to use and what not to use, along with their pros and cons.

I liked your video and found it informative but i'm a bit surprised you did not mention sand. I read that sand was one of the best choices because it doesn't hold moisture and so is harder for bacteria or disease to thrive in. It seems to be a pretty clean and inexpensive choice.

Interesting video ( as they always are especially the diatomaceous earth one). But I've been using hay for my chickens for 20 years and never had any respiratory problems. I put a thin scattering of sawdust down first. Then on cleaning day burn it and scatter ash on my field. Also hay i feel is great in winter (gets to -20s here) and they stay toasty and warm with a low watt heat lamp. Surely only using sawdust unless 4 inches thick wouldn't keep them warm?
@flytesofancy
@flytesofancy 5 лет назад
Dear Susan, i am assuming that you are not in the UK. In our damp and reasonably mild climate we tend to get more mould spores in Hay which can cause issues.I would also expect the birds to be up on the perches at night not down in the floor litter.

@hectorskmetija3015 5 лет назад
Flyte So Fancy Hiya. Thanks for your reply. I moved from England to Slovenia last year. My chickens in England never used perches even though they had plenty of them and raised nest boxes. Which they also never used. But in the garden they would perch on bench backs but only if I was sitting on them! Your hemp with eucalyptus (which sounds like a great product) would you deliver to Slovenia?
@flytesofancy

Susan Goddard I am very sorry Susan, but we do not send to Slovenia. I have heard that is a lovely country.

Ive been saving the larger pine wood shavings from the planer & jointer about 1/2 to a 1/4 the size of store bought (and very clean), our concern is the bit of finer sawdust mixed in affecting the birds airways? They have One small coop with 10 laying hens all year round, and 200 or so meat birds in a large barn in summer. Any advice?
@phillipweymouth430
@phillipweymouth430 4 года назад
As long as you get rid of as much dust as possible, it should be OK. Play it by ear, if they have any signs of irritation stop using it.

Just came across you Chanel,just got into keeping chickens, only have 4 that are3 moths old. The area I have is limited due to city ordinances. I have a coop/ house that is about 12’ long and 7’ wide. The back of it is raised up 3-4” .The thought Was to give them an area if it’s not too wet if a lot of rain, I also have put pine shavings up there, but I don’t ever really see them up there, they are down on the dirt huddled when sleeping, and have a perch in there as well. Should I be adding the pine shavings throughout the whole coop instead of just the back raised area? Thanks for any advice

How do you add the eucalyptus oil to the hemp? I'm from Canada, so from what i understand, you don't ship down here haha. Thank you.
@flytesofancy
@flytesofancy 4 года назад
We have it added during the bagging stage, I believe they spray on the essential oils which are then sealed in the bale. I would imagine you could just add some essential oil to the bedding as you put it in your hen house.

Can hemp be used in an outdoor run aswell as the coop? It’s covered but still gets rain in from the sides, if yes how often does it need changing? Thankyou
@phillipweymouth430
@phillipweymouth430 3 года назад
Dear Megan, yes it can be used outside but if you get a lot of rain on it it will of course start to compost faster than say woodchip. if it has reasonable cover I would go for it as a trial. The hens will love it!

you said since straw is grown in field there is a slight chance of bugs...wouldnt hemp pose the same problems. also how much is a bale of hemp? thx
@phillipweymouth430
@phillipweymouth430 3 года назад
As straw is essentially tubular whereas hemp is flat and macerated it can easily contain mites etc, whereas hemp is a lot less likely to do so. A bale of our HempBed-E with Eucalyptus is £14.95 plus carriage to your location. Happy New Year.

Some people have told me a thin layer of very throughly dried grass clippings work for the nesting box is this true?
@phillipweymouth430

Almendra Maureira Perez dried grass is hay and I would not use hay in a nest box. This is because of the mould spores.

Flyte So Fancy rice hulls are very good. They are usually the most dry of all beddings so they absorb moisture very well and therefore take long to get soggy. It also decomposes fast which is good for your compost.

Hi is it safe for chickens to eat hemp
@flytesofancy
@flytesofancy 3 года назад
It is certainly not ideal, but it is by no means toxic or harmful in that regard. If you find they are eating it, i would always try to discourage this as it is not something they are biologically design to process and can lead to impacted crop and similar issues.
