Two big conflicts are between Serbia and Croatia and between Serbia and Albania.
The hostility between Serbia and Croatia dates back to the Yugoslav wars when Croatia wanted to break away from Yugoslavia, a multi-ethnic state that was mostly controlled by Serbia. This led to a devastating civil war that still dominates the relationship between the two countries.
Serbia and Albania are in conflict over Kosovo, most of whose population is culturally drawn towards Albania. However, Serbia does not want to give up its claim to the territory, even though Kosovo has declared independence.
Religion plays an important role in these conflicts as Serbs are Orthodox Christians, while Croats are Catholic Christians and Albanians and Kosovars are Muslims.
