I would argue that Italy should get credit for Catholicism, and to me, it makes more sense to call America just protestant than specifically Baptist in this context.

Incredible amount of research and passion put into this, and it SHOWS. This brought me from watching you for Pikmin or whatever to watching you for the work you do. Cheers man, hope RU-vid fixes that sub count glitch soon.

Shitting on the arbitrary study of economics is turbo based
@BoardGamesBricksHobbies
@BoardGamesBricksHobbies 8 месяцев назад
It depends on the field, but economics is actually mostly data-based. The problem is no one actually cares about the numbers. Take for example how studies show that large sporting events such as the Olympics actually do more economic harm to the host city/country and that the benefits are slim to non-existent. Or the fact that countries that switch their clocks twice a year for daylight saving time lose millions of dollars in productivity and see an increase in deadly accidents. Yet no one seems to believe it so that argument to change anything is moot. 🤷 That said, I graduated in economics and can absolutely laugh at my own field 😂

@@BoardGamesBricksHobbies pretty sure that what CowFoodYum and I were referring to was the explicit study field of economics, like the stock market and massive bond/stock trading corporations and not so much the facts that you mentioned; which just seem like general statistics that at most are tangentially related to a place's economy. I don't think it's that general people don't care (which can be true about economics and statistics) but the studies behind how to make a country's currency more valuable for example. Specially regarding Europe lol it's just a bunch of circlejerking. I see what you're referring to though

@@NthrUnnecessary Monetary costs are just one part of economics. Economics considers opportunity costs, negative externalities, and more. A lot of the stock market stuff is more business mumbo jumbo than economics. But yeah, econ, stats, business, it's all connected in some way. Thanks for the civil response 👍

Amazing Video. Translating the games victory conditions back into real world examples really shows how much inspiration Civilization takes from the real world. Also the amount of research that must have went into this video. I really hope that this video will get the audience it deserves.

Note about the tech tree: In reality, really only the US would have "Nuclear Fusion" properly unlocked, since in reality while multiple countries have created thermonuclear weapons, there's only been 1 fusion reactor that has properly reached ignition (basically an energy output greater than it's input), that being the NIF in california. I mean, in reality we built fission weapons before properly inventing the fission plant, so I guess thermonuclear weapons would count as well if normal nukes count for fission

If I had the slightest impetus to do all this research myself, I would have given up long before all the stuff that has to do with the score victory. You've got more motivation than me. It was a wonderful Ted Talk. You're welcome.

I put off watching this earlier due to the length, but I must say I was not disappointed, I feel like it struck just the right balance of silliness and seriousness. Well done 👍

For the Cultural victory, I'd like to see what kind of comparisons you could draw from Civ4's way of doing things (3 Cities at 'Legendary' Culture, flipping cities through Culture, etc).

I didn't understand 99% of the video, I just wanted to see if China comes out on top, and I was not disappointed with the results. France is a big shocker to me though. Thought they were just kinda there lol. I may not have understood much, but it was a fun watch the whole way through!

Question for religious victory! Since the Roman Empire occupied the city of Jerusalem when Christianity was founded, wouldn’t that make it so Italy would get the points for Catholicism? It is possible to use a great prophet in a conquered city state after all, and isn’t a terrible move if you didn’t build your own holy site. Of course you have the issue with Turkey also being a sort of successor to Rome through the Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire, but still.
@CowFoodYum
@CowFoodYum Год назад
That's actually a really good point. Personally I would say that, because Catholicism was specifically "founded" in Jerusalem and Jerusalem exists in the current state of Israel (city-state according to our rules), Israel gets credit for it. Considering that Jerusalem was originally a city-state before it came under Roman occupation, I think the "ownership" of Catholicism transferred to Israel when Israel began their occupation of Jerusalem. But this is certainly messy reasoning, and I can see where you're coming from.

@@CowFoodYum Your argument makes a lot of sense too, I agree it could go either way. I do wonder though, in Civ 6, what would happen if you made a city state your holy city, then it becomes liberated. Could you still win a religious victory? It’s such a niche scenario.

Oh, minor correction: The Russian Orthodox Church wouldn't be considered a Protestant church, Orthodox Christians are a different branch that split from Catholicism (or that Catholicism split off from, either way) much earlier than the Protestant Reformation.
