This survey corroborates the fact that we need to be honest with ourselves and we are in the philippines for the girls and the favorable visa situation. Places like malaysia thailand vietnam mexico and panama run circles around the philippines in terms of infrastructure, food, internet, transportation, medical etc. and are significantly cheaper than the philippines and you get a lot more for your money.

@@wanderingdoc5075 I would need to know your circumstances and what you want or what you're looking for. Are you more comfortable in a city or do you like to explore the more remote areas? In a vacuum, I'd say start in the capital, Phnom Penh and talk to people and talk to some tour/visa agencies. Get to know the 172street area and get info from the visa business near Best Central hotel and right next to Sundance Hotel and Saloon. It's an expat area. They're a wealth of knowledge. IF you want to live well and dirt cheap then research Siem Reap. There are lots of vids on YT.

I am a Finn who lives in Finland. I understand that people with families want to move to Finland. My country is one of the best countries for families with children or new children to be born. For a Finnish man who already has adult children and the financial opportunity to move abroad from Europe, several Asian countries are good options. I have had two long-term relationships in Thailand, which I imagine moving to. I traveled a bit more in Asia and now I'm not as sure as before which country I'm landing in. Indonesia was a positive surprise. Laos was a complete surprise. In addition to these, there are six other countries to be investigated. I spent way too much time in Thailand.

Malaysia should be in top 5. It's living costs are so low it's only a little more than Vietnam. The gasoline, electricity are lower than Vietnam. Top healthcare services, great food choices(Chinese, Indian, Western), very clean and safe, great infrastructure.

They forget that the cost of living can vary based on where people come from. For example, we have free healthcare services in Spain because I come from Norway. It is difficult to rank countries based on cost of living, but I also believe Vietnam is number one. However, one must also enjoy living there. There are so many statistics around; here is one: Malaga tops the list of global living destinations. Malaga, Spain, is now the best city in the world to live in for 2023, according to InterNations, the biggest community for people living abroad. It is not the cheapest, but if you live 30 minutes from Malaga, the cost of living is more affordable. There are so many factors to consider; the provinces in the Philippines are cheaper than the big cities.

My observation as well !!! > Vietnam for example has no retirement visa. -- That requires a 'visa run' expense - and a pain in the ass - every 90 days ! These extra expenses are required to 'live' there. Unlike Cambodia for example (next door) where a retirement visa over 55 can be had for $180 / year - and no visa runs !!! Certainly much more convenient for an older retired person ? -- And -- many more Khmer people speak English - business signs menus and such are in English as well. + they even accept the USD and many menus have prices in USD's - adding to the ''comfort'' of daily living ? --- Such factors and considerations are routinely ignored in these surveys !!! ( ? ) The language barrier for me is a deal breaker. I want English and a ''comfortable'' stress free retirement & no feeling isolated from not speaking the language. And I know I'm not alone.

That's very good that the Philippines is not at the top of the list. That is very bad when a country is the top destination. Then the wrong people come. The Philippines generally doesn't have the "dream image" of Thailand, for example. And that's good for all PH fans. Under the radar is always better.

Since this survery was purely economic, leaving out factors such as the majority of the population speaking English, personal safety, visa issues, and general friendliness of the people....they really are missing some important elements of 'the best places to live for ex-pats' and therefore one has to question it's importance.

Very interesting indeed but I tend not to trust these type of lists because people only rank there happiness based on what they know, so a lot of it will based on outdated information. I really think the Philipines should be much higher and you're right that Turkey has gotten much more expensive. Also how can anyone compared the cuture in Turkey or Spain to the Philipines? I think you just can't compare but for most people the Philipines would be much better becasue of the warm culture, friendliness and lack of language barrier.

Price tag $1.2 million, now my son's income is in the top 10% in California. But that means 90% can't buy a place like his. No wonder kids in their late 20's and early 30's are pissed off. Uncle Joe drove up the mortgage interest from 3.5% to 7% and than added all that inflation and kids even making $200K a year can't afford to buy a home! No doubt the Philippines is THE most expensive country to live in.....in southeast Asia. In the last 15 years or so, OFW's (Overseas Filipino Workers) have begun to return to the Philippines for retirement and have bought up a large share of the housing market thus driving up prices of houses. The ones that haven't retired yet and that are still working overseas are able to get long-term mortgages (something they weren't able to get in their job in the Philippines) and again....driving up housing prices. Because of their ability to speak English well (the only country in southeast Asia to do so) and their overall friendliess in the service industry....it makes them prime candidates for hiring overseas especially in areas such as the cruise industry where Filipinos make up over 60% of the workers on these cruise ships. On top of that, you have South Koreans that are buying up condos in the Philippines at an eccelerated rate thus driving up the prices in that market.

Not for many - including me. -- That alone - 'for me' - is a deal breaker !!! -- Indonesia has few English speakers and Vietnam is the same ? -- The Philippines really does appear to offer an easier way of integrating into the culture to some degree - because of the language !
