My assessment between Leaf and Ioniq was very much similar to yours. In the end I chose Ioniq because lack of app support in Ionoq was a very minor shortcoming compared to Leaf's lack of active battery cooling system. Also the price was a bit cheaper for the Ioniq and I preferred Ioniq's fit and finish over the Leafs.

Bjørn, once again a very useful video. If you plan on making this available as google doc, you could add some criteria mentioned in the comments (and sustainable top speed for people near German Autobahns 😜). I would love to see this list grow over time when new EVs and maybe new criteria / technology becomes available. Then people could sort the list according their own weight on the different up-to-date criteria, whenever they are ready to go electric. Very nice work you did here, thank you so much! 😊
@Lovejazz01
@Lovejazz01 6 лет назад
To add I think it’s amazing that still in 2018 with all the electric cars promised (only the Kona and the I-Pace will be the only new cars ready for production ) these plus the Model S and Model X are still the only full electric vehicles available (outside of China) and some not worldwide. Great informative video Bjorn, this information is very valuable coming from the man who knows the most and has done the most research in the the name of electric vehicles.
@sadlogic
@sadlogic 6 лет назад
In Europe it is actually the opposite. The Model 3 is as available as chinese cars: not at all. So either the model 3 shouldn't be in this ranking, or chinese cars should be as well. Maybe the best would be to calculate wait time into the ranking too.
@Lovejazz01
@Lovejazz01 6 лет назад
logic1990 I guess that also applies to the Renault Zoe, it’s never been available in the US. But Bjorn is generalizing all full electric vehicles outside of China(except for Model S and X of course)

My must-have features: -5 star crashtest rating -Automatic Emergency Breaking + Forward collision warning -TACC with speed restriction awareness (for highways/interstates or equivalent) -Fastcharging with >60 kW -Navigation system which includes charging stop routing -300 km range minimum (that's what I expect to drive without thinking about need to charge from a car) -Traffic aware routing -3 phase build in charger (else you're extremely limited in Germany for homecharging) -App based precondition I think the only one which fit this bullet points is actually the Tesla Model 3. Some competition would be great 😐

Pop Laurentiu Jaguar i-pace is too expensive to be compared to the rest. Additionally it has just 1-phase charging. I haven't compared it further, since it's obviously a no-go. I will not buy no Volkswagen anymore, they are not trustworthy anymore.

Muskar well, wintertire, wet road, 0°C, 120 kph range. I don't mind recharging some very cold days in the year below this range. But it should be achieveable most of the time in the year.
@poplaurentiu4148
@poplaurentiu4148 6 лет назад
Ruben Kelevra - well the Jaguar i-Pace base model starts at 58,900 euro but with govern incentives for green cars, a hefty deduction bonus granted if the owner also destroy an old used vehicle and on top of all that a dealer promotion the price payed would be 40,900 euro (+many free taxation's) so that is a price i can live with.. answer me this honestly: how many Tesla 3 owners you think will get the basic version at 35.000 with no option selected at all.. ? all want something different and they already complain everywhere since are so few custom options and extra packs available for this Tesla 3 paint rims and another optional feature that include nicer seat autonomous level (..) and that is pretty much it right ? but i-Pace is like an sleeker SUV it has same range as Tesla 3, is bigger inside and much nicer build inside-out dash too and it does not have all controls and things fitted in a Tablet in such inconvenient placed right in the middle so each time you wanna do something you have to look right and fiddling through settings to search on that touch there that is so stupid ! ohh and the charging points in Europe also are in constantly build if are show on the car screen via apps.. so yeah..

Good video. Thank you. And, man, that's such a tough list. The Ioniq looks very appealing but then it doesn't have proper app support at all, which is a huge buzzkill. The Ampera/Bolt looks good but has no ACC and is expensive. It's so weird that cars mix and match even such "simple" features to such a high degree that no clear winner is possible (unless you have the budget to afford a Model 3 - hopefully the less expensive versions will be available soon). The Ioniq looks extremely visually pleasing too.

One additional category could be availability. The model 3 may not be available in Europe until next year and the Ampera may not be available at all in the future. Also, it will be interesting to see how your list changes once the Model 3 is available in Europe as you may need to include the Kona EV. Perhaps you should re-do this list every 6 months. I have a feeling that the EV environment may change quite a bit over the next couple of years.
@sadlogic
@sadlogic 6 лет назад
I agree. The market is evolving very fast at the moment. It would be interesting to get an update in a year and the year after that, with Kona, I-Pace, E-Tron and later I.D. and others included.
@justjc51
@justjc51 6 лет назад
I agree that availability, in Europe, should have been one of the factors considered. It would mean that the list either had to exclude the Tesla Model 3 International version, as it is not yet in production, or include other EVs planned for delivery late 2018 like the Hyundai KONA EV, the KIA NIRO EV and the 2019 Nissan LEAF E-Plus. Hopefully availability will be a factor in future buyers guides. I am also a bit disappointed that the ZOE chosen for the comparison is the "old" R90 version, when the sportier R110 version is available to buy now. After all it adds needed torque and power, as well as Android Auto to the car. Other than that it is a nice little comparison, that shows how some EVs are a bit ahead of the rest.

The I-Pace will need to be compared to other EVs as it is significantly higher priced. With a little bargaining you would be able to get two Nissan LEAF for the same price as a decently equipped I-Pace. Adding it would also require that the Model S and X is added, making it a top 3 Tesla win.

Thanks for the great analysis! Since those cars have very different consumptions it would be interesting to have in the chart the amount of kms gained for each hour/minute of charge. Considering that aspect too, I would definitely be oriented towards the Ioniq.

Hi Bjorn, please do a drag race over about 100m, you’ll see which one has the most grip. All of them can’t get the full power down due to traction control. It means changing tires can change the performance significantly. I put Bridgestone Potenzas on my ioniq, and the difference is huge, in sport mode it’s quicker than pretty much any gasoline car off the line (I kept the LRR tires for long distance drives). The power rating is misleading to newbies because it’s almost constant power, not peak. Also be careful comparing motor torque, because they will have different gear ratios depending on the max rpm and top speed.

Hi Bjorn. I just wanted to thank you for your in-depth statistical analysis of these EV vehicles. Is there some way that you could consider making a download of your rankings and statistics available for some of your viewers who might be considering an EV purchase in the near future? Thank you Bjørn for that great video! To my knowledge, however, it seems Model 3 Long Range would be much more expensive in Europe, at around 60,000 Euros... Also, it isn't yet official that the European version will have AC three phase (11 kW) support. The U.S. version hasn't, the European versions of S and X have it, but still Tesla could decide differently for Model 3 - they could even add a CCS option for Europe...

Hi Bjorn, great vids, No Model 3 in UK so Ioniq is no 1. If efficiency was taken into account it would be anyway it is amazing, the quick charging is worth 20 miles extra range any day, I nearly bought a leaf but no battery temp control and poor efficiency at speed ruined an otherwise great car for me. it's a hard choice, but i will say i am back on the leaf. as my best choice. as living in denmark. i dont need a long distance car. as the moste of the rides are below. 300 km of range. i can take the, boat to copenhagen from Aarhus ( Aarhus ore ebeltoft to sjællands ode) . wen we go there, And then the leaf is enuh for all of Denmark. Only minus is the non active cooling of the batteries. the range of the leaf can cover aboud. 90% of denmark in one charge, from my home.
@justjc51
@justjc51 6 лет назад
The big problem with the LEAF, in Denmark, is that it isn't efficient at higher speeds and that significantly reduces the useful range. This is why several tests, among others the comparison made by Bjørn Nyland at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gj3MsS9M3dE.html shows that the Hyundai IONIQ EV has a real world range that is longer with its 28 kWh battery pack than the Nissan LEAF gets out of its 40 kWh battery pack. The IONIQ EV will also recharge quicker. Hopefully this will be fixed in the 2019 LEAF E-plus, with battery cooling, a bigger battery, quicker charging options and a more powerful engine.

Hi Bjørn. In Denmark the VW e-Golf have just had it's price lowered almost 100.000 dkr. to 229.000 dkr, while having more equipment on the base model, example digital display. How would you rate it at this price? Now it's a good bit cheaper than the Huyndai and Nissan. Thanks for your great work. It's really helping me while looking for an EV.

Thank you for this summary. If you have a chance, please upgrade it with the latest offers. Based on your information, the Nissan Leaf offers the best value plus it has the highest number of additional features (tied with the BMW i3). My only compliant is the lack of an active liquid cooling management system. If you drive a lot or make frequent road trips, then this would be a poor choice.

So how does app support work with those cars? Do I have to buy a SIM card and put it in and pay monthly for that too?

Hey Bjørn, thx for the interesting ranking. Of course it is very individual but anyway - the opinion of someone who drove all of these cars under many conditions is important. The only thing I missed as a factor in the ranking is the efficiency. But maybe that would not change the result at all. :) BTW: Hopefully my ordered Ioniq will be delievered next month.

Nice job. How about rating more mundane but equally important crash protection, outward visibility, headlight performance, windshield wiper performance, ingress/egress. Would like to hear your thoughts on these.

Could also be interesting to compare how efficient the cars are (drag coefficient, cost pr km etc)

How is the waterproofing on EVs in case of flooded roads? Upto how many inches of water can these EVs wade through without water entering the inside of the car or damage the batteries .

One big thing for me would be ability to tow a trailer. Some of the new e-NV200 can tow a very small trailer, the 5 seater Evalia can, but the 7 seater can not. Also the capacity of only 150kg´s is like a bad joke, but you can at least take a bike rack, a canoe trailer or maybe a Combi Camp tent trailer with you.

I still want to have a Tesla Model S - too bad Tesla doesn't have a service center near me (and also has some quality control issues that shouldn't be there for such an expensive car). I tried convincing my father to go buy a Tesla Model S, but he said that he wants the option to drive to any garage to get the car serviced which isn't possible with a Tesla :(

If I understood your next best cars to buy after the Tesla Model 3 being the Leaf or Ioniq. Why do you like the Ioniq over the Bolt? Will you be doing an updated video that includes the Kona EV? Thank you for your videos.

Might want to include stats from the wintertest that one nordic consumer org. did. Showed remarkable differences between cars in range as well as fast charging speeds

How much battery loss do you get if you turn the heat to maybe 60 degrees F in the winter? I wouldn’t think it would reduce that much but never had an EV. Maybe one car gets heated up you can drastically reduce the temperature in the winter? Just curious...I was interested in a Chevy Bolt EV.
