Hyundai Kona 1000 km challenge

Because of your great videos, i had bought a 17’ Ioniq, and now we also have a 23’ Kona. Keep up the great work.

Bjorn, I have a TM3 SR+ that I can lend you for the 1000Km chalenge. But you have to come to Portugal to do the chalenge. That's the bad news. The good news is that we have temperatures above 30º here now :)

From what I remember of the live stream, the answer to the question "where does that extra 80 minutes over an M3 go?" is roughly "every charging stop takes 45 mins rather than 25". So Kona drivers will end up fatter than Tesla drivers. ;-)

you can make head to head LR vs SR+... same day, same distance, same conditions... it will help those thinking between the 2 options

My summer trips of 300 and 400 km in the Kona went so well that I am planning a mid-winter trip about 840 km. It looks like the charging stops will add 30-60 minutes over the time that I might take in fossil-burner. On a 10-hour trip, not a big deal at all.

You should do leaf 62 run in cold temperatures. So everyone can see the impact of passive cooling

Maybe driving a little slower would have brought you home faster. Real driving time is about 9 hours estimated. 5 km/h slower means 45 km less in 9 hours. Thats, with 120 km/h (115 real) instead of 125 km/h 23 minutes longer driving. But you'll save at least one stop with this 10% less power consumption. Or in other words 200 wh/km. 23 kwh less loading at 71 kw is 20 minutes saving on loading...including going to the parking also 23 minutes. And you're not loading on 71 KW avarage.

Maybe good time to wait for real winter and redo some 1000 km tests to see, how much extra time those low temperatures add on long trips. Many people travel in winter on holiday.

Nice work Bjorn. Really appreciate your 1,000 km challenges. I finally just saw my first Kona Electric in Toronto this past weekend. It was white. It's way better in red! In contrast, I see Teslas every day, mostly Model 3s.

I envy you so much for having all those charging facilities wherever you go. Where we are, a small country with never a distance greater than 400 KM we are hard put to find a charger and even harder to find it un ICED

Ionity is great and indeed a big improvement. Got an easy and relaxed 750km in 9 hours on holiday with my e-Niro. Left at 9 in the morning, two stops at Ionity and arrived at my hotel at 6 in the evening. Pushing it a little more would and cutting the lunch break short would have improved the time. With Ionity and Fastned the non-Tesla cars have also become great travel cars. Now we only need a single payment system for all rapid chargers in Europe ;)

Thanks for the video - loading a BEV gets better/faster each year. That was the same result with e-cannonball in Germany last month. What is missing so far are cheaper cars and an elektro car with price and size of my Dacia Lodgy or a Dacia Logan for families with children. Greetings from Germany

So that's why you were in such a hurry at the charging station. But now my Kona starred for a second here, so its value quadrupled ;)

I'm from Finland and have driven my Kona MY20 for about ten months. As far as I can say the speed is the absolute killer for this car. Last time that we went to see our relatives we drove 800km at one go (and two charging stops). The average consuption was just below 160 Wh/km and outside temperature was -7C when we started and +2C when we arrived. Mainly the speed limit was 80 km/h. But next day when we drove another 300km and 60% of it was 120 km/h highway speeds the consumption was way higher. Still a solid car and haven't let me down even when it was -33C last winter.

I would actually love to see you do a winter weather 1000km challenge with the same cars. It would be very interesting to compare the numbers.

In "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" app that you use you can toggle from HP to kW in the settings. And you can see both the actual battery SoC and the displayed SoC (just like in Leaf Spy). This app has many profiles for other EVs: Niro, Soul, Ioniq, Zoe, Prius, Prius Prime, etc.

10 days in Portugal at the end of October would be nice, 4 hours direct flights from Oslo to Lisbon and back to Oslo for 2 adults only costs about 5000 NOK including 23kg luggage per person.

I'm in Belgium, and am jealous of all the nice Ionity chargers you have. Dayum. I'm lucky to find a 50kW charger in the wild.

8:42 Those are nearly the identical taper points I observed in the Kia Niro EV when I was testing it. First taper ~55%, second taper ~70%, third taper came even quicker around 75%. The first two taper points are almost identical to the Bolt EV, so I'm guessing it is due to the battery cells.

If u want warm temps, it’s been 95-97 degrees here in southern USA a lot lately. Finally in the 80’s this week.

that preview picture, the hulk :D Anyway my question how expensive is it to ride electric vs bensin/diesel? what does it cost to fully charge your EV? read something about fortum salting the bill when it comes to charging your car on their chargers.

The most interesting thing I saw, is the pictures of Bjorn who goes on the Europe trip with fosile car. Damn I would like to see that in 2020. Imagine Bjorn going to the Europe with Renault Laguna. That would be nice to compare, expenses, time consuming, and time of travel.

Maybe you should do the 1000km challenge with a Leaf in the winter, since it suffers so badly from throttled charging speeds - might get a better time! 😄

Interesting. It is amazing what temperature and speed does to consumption. I drive 30 km @ 100 km/h high way and 30 km @ 60 km/h major roads each day in my Kona. Average speed is about 60 km/h The consumption is between 120 - 130 wh/km . Temperature between 15 - 25. C. GOM @ 100% SOC has reported 506 km range Climate off. Whilst you can't control the temperature, I wonder if driving slower will get you there faster?

Do all Norwegian electric cars have registration numbers starting EV? Another great video, thanks Bjørn.

Great video as usual... Being in Canada with cold weather here also, it is interesting to see how the cold affects it. Wondering what your total charge time and total cost for charging was for the 1000 km..

Hi Bjørn, have you thought doing the 1000 km challenge with the Kia E-Niko? It’s very good in term of cargo, now it has it own app (UVO) and, with the Norwegian speed limitations, good consumption. Maybe it’s not that good with charging speed, but it worth to try it.

Can you do this run with a M3 SR+? I'm curious how the smaller battery and lower charging speed (vs M3 LR) will do.

Bjørn! Your test results should be a mandatory stamp on all electric cars :) It is super useful. Have you considered running this test with a regular fossil diesel car? Just to get a reference time. This way, we would know how far behind EV's are, or how close they are.

Since its getting colder, i wonder if you should do a video on range reduction testing on the different populate EV's to see what their range is when its really cold. i wonder if there are differences in range reduction between vehicles.

Want to test a LR RWD (with 200kw charging), will easily top the list. But you have to travel to NL.

Question, does it use the battery heat to heat the cabin? The climate was drawing 0.01kW so i guess it is?

It could be fun to see the same 1000 km test in Germany with free speed limit. With Ioniq (28kWh model "King of EV's")it is no problem to drive 1000 km under 11 hours, but I think that the cars with big front area and not so good cv will take longer time to drive the 1000km with high speed because of high energy cosumption

One very interesting test you could do is to repeat one of the tests you already made. Say with the Tesla Model S P85 and see if there is a significant difference in time that can be used to leverage the results.

I couldn’t pronounce those words at all anyway being an American. You can say them how you want and I will never know.;)

I would love more wintertesting. Especially outside of Norway. For example normal roads in the middle of Sweden, without a lot of planning before. Random chosen places. Like a real case scenario. Is it even possible?

I've noticed that on the US version on the rear of the Kona it has the Kona badge where your Hyundai badge is and it has Electric where your Kona badge is. The US Kona doesn't have the Hyundai badge. I wonder why they are different?

Im in Australia where they haven't taken off yet. If the charging stations are busy as with petrol stations, your time waiting will be ridiculous. How is that overcome? Do you pay by card at the station?
