Detroit will have the most cap space in the NBA this summer, but who should they spend it on? 📲 Follow Pistons Intellect on Socials: Twitter: @jack_kelly_313 Instagram: @pistons_intellect TikTok: @pistons_intellect #nba #pistons #detroit
Getting improved team defense comes from coaching. Duren is already a better player than Hartenstein in every area except for defense. He is a better rebounder, scorer, and passer as a 20 year old NBA player. So the Pistons are better off getting a more defensive minded coach who is willing to teach younger players rather than picking up a lesser player for 5x as much salary. That's just my 2 cents, which isn't enough to buy much of anything.
Defense got worse the moment Dan Burke went out for the season. It’s a small sample size but those first 5 games of the season was their best defensive performances. After Burke left for the season they took a huge dip. That’s what I noticed. There’s a ton of perspectives to how bad the season was last year.
@@peteymac84Dan Burke left for the season? I noticed how good we were at the begin.. I noticed that Duren and Stew combination was working defensively. That's why I don't want to give up on Duren like a lot of fans did.
Hartenstein is good but I still believe in Duren/getting a big who can work alongside Duren. We gotta get Ben and Rasheed Wallace to mentor his defense! Monk would be good for shooting but I like bringing in Luke Kennard again because of his added ability to handle the ball on top of his lights out shooting! Tobias can NOT come if he is being overpaid! But I see your vision! GTJ would be pretty good though! Claxton would 100% improve our interior defense, but Andre Drummond is my ideal backup 5! Great video, Jack!
Hartenstein is a beast!id love to have him! Who i dont want is Malik Monk. Hes totally mediocre and we cant afford to get a mediocre player with low trade value this offseason
I do think you would be able to trade Monk on his new contract in the future if Ivey stops being shitty and thereby overtakes him. And yes 1000% agree Hartenstein is my first phone call.
Orlando simply has too many bigs. One of Gogo, WCJ, or Mo Wagner won't be back there IMO. Any of these guys are good enough and cheaper centers that work.
Agree, but I think Quenton Grimes is also built in the same mold. He can provide this when healthy, but unfortunately we didn't get a sample of that this year due to injury. If we trade Ivey, then I would love to have both of them.
Pistons should target Goga Bitadze and Lonnie Walker. Goga Bitadze provides rim protection, a soft touch around the rim, and solid passing for a big. Lonnie Walker is a solid perimeter defender, great in transition, and shot 38% from three on 4.7 attempts per game.
I like that you brought up some under the radar options to upgrade the rotation. While I'm focused on two starters that doesn't prevent adding some quality backups. Especially if we trade some guys to get win now starters.
Don’t feel like you can talk about the defensive failures last year and not talk about the bad perimeter defense. It’s part of why I’m a fan of GTJ. I’m also hoping Grimes returns to his 2nd season form. We can’t evaluate the rim protection without evaluating the guards and wings. Especially due to Monty’s scheme which requires on-ball defenders staying with their man and the bigs playing drop and preventing their own defender from scoring.
I agree with this 100%. Duren was bad because he along with the guards could not defend the pick and roll. Ivey and Cade both struggled with P&R on defense. Other teams consistently exploited this.
My ideal offseason is this in order of priority if I was Langdon 1) Fire Weaver 2) Sign Cade to Max 3) Discuss My vision of team with Monty and see if he is bought into the vision. Talk with Cade to see if he is on board with Monty. Does Monty still have the locker room? If it's even questionable, then fire and move on to get your guy as coach. 4) Resign Fonteccio to 12-13M per year for 3-4 years (Done at end of summer) 5) Package Ivey & #5 and to get Brandon Ingram or Michael Porter Jr as those teams struggle with cap issues 6) Sign Gary Trent Jr, Malik Monk or De'Anthony Melton 7) Sign vet PG and Vet Center for mentorship roles New Lineup: Cade/Sasser/Vet PG GTJ/Grimes Thompson/Fonteccio Ingram/Stew Duran/Stew/Vet C
@@scottwickett1273 That's fair, especially considering he only averages 60 games a year. He is a solid all-star level player to plug in along Cade though. I would take the risk if the price isn't too much (Ivey & #5 is worth it for me)
@@ZachErickson-0222 Between the next contract and the history of injuries and the decline in 3PAr the past couple years....I wouldn't want him even for "free".
if their is one player im all for n going to break the bank and cross my fingers its OG Aunoby if n he will opt out..and doesn't cost us any young players or draft capital....
@@peteymac84 I'm not assuming. I'm pointing out that people who don't want a criminal have a legitimate basketball argument. Ex Cons should be allowed to pursue any career that doesn't put potential victims in harms way. My question about levery FA is contract, risk, and ability.
Sorry Jack, but I find it infuriating that a bunch of our fanbase is suddenly obsessed with spending a bunch of money on a non shooting centre....again. If there is one thing that has been complained about for years with Detroit is that we don't have enough spacing and shooters. Centers these days are a dime a dozen, you can pick up solid defensive bigs every year for next to nothing. Overpaying for a non star centre is lunacy. The team is too far away from anything to be getting "the little things" guys. Jalen Duren is extremely young and needs to be given some actual support. Maybe some wings that aren't turn-styles on defence would help him. An experienced backup C, that makes sense. He isn't good now sure, but I completely disagree with the need for him to be replaced before his 3rd year even begins. The only way I would accept a center in FA is if JD gets moved and I can't stand that idea either. With that being said, if there is one thing that has been made clear in recent times, the current NBA playoffs being a clear example, is that shooters are absolutely the number 1 thing that a team needs. Fill the clearest hole that you have before you worry about the "intangibles". Intangibles are the coaching staffs job to solve anyway. Get a quality coaching staff in to establish good habits. If you are going to spend big money in FA you absolutely need to get players who can open the floor for your franchise player. Go after Monk, resign Fontecchio, maybe grab Gary Trent Jr. Hell throw money at Bruce Brown sure. But get a lineup that actually makes sense in todays NBA, find out how that plays, then worry about the finer details. This isn't a case of one or two moves and everything is fixed. Start with something that resembles an actual lineup first. Still love the content bro. Just having a rant!
Shooting is a luxury at the center position, while defense is non-negotiable. They have to replace Duren with someone who isn't a total garbage fire atrocity on defense or they are guaranteed to lose 60+ again.
@@scottwickett1273 agreed. Duren worries me, that he likes to be flashy ang celebrate too much when he scores... and get lost on defense... thats not a good signal... Center nowadays, who undestands the role, and take defense seriously will have a long carreer... and Hartenstein seems like that... but all depends of what happen in the draft... if we trade the pick for a stablished player, them Harstenstein should be signed for like 80-90/4 now if we draft Clingan, them throw the money at shooters with less. For me: without Clingan: Sign Hartenstein, kcp, Gary Trent ,derrick jones jr, kelly oubre... something with those names with Clingan: put Harris (with reasonable price) and all the others
If you want shooting how about trading a guy like Duren who can't shoot and sign some FS who can? Jonis V has tied to the new GM and would provide a veteran leader. Jalen Smith can play both PF and center. Bamba or Bol Bol shouldn't cost much. Now we have spacing for Cade and Ausar.
I appreciate your point of view, I don’t love the idea of paying $20 million + per year for Claxton or I-Hart, but Detroit desperately need defense at the center position. There’s a world where JD figures it out defensively, but I’m not sure I want to rely solely on that for next season. My question for you would be who is the experienced backup C Detroit could add? Maybe Andre Drummond? But that doesn’t get me too excited.
@@Pistons_Jack I would point everyone to the team that neighbours us in our division. Indiana, who has forgone all sense of defense for shooting. Haliburton now is the talk of the town, a team that went to the conference finals. Sure they have Myles Turner but they've had him for years, and it made no difference until they got a plethora of shooters around him. Bring back a Plumlee or get Biyombo as a backup. It doesn't need to be sexy or splashy. Get your defensive co-ordinator back as well. I know everyone has lost patience with this situation we are in. But if you want your franchise guy to reach his ceiling he is going to need space to operate. That, alongside a lob threat, be that Duren or someone else if it does come to that, will determine whether this team goes anywhere or not. No matter what this team does in the offseason, it is in all likelihood another 50 loss season. You may have to accept that. But we shall see.
