this past christmas, i went through 4 airports and i wandered a lot. I actually heard more than a few gates cracking down on all the carry-on abusers. 2 gates plus one of my own absolutely enforced the 1+1 carryon and told people that they will not board with more than 2. One gate even announced that removing big jackets also counted as a carryon if they didn't keep it with them in the seat. Amazing to see, and it's about time..

I bought a smaller carry on and a smaller personal item for this exact reason a few years ago. The rule abuse is fine when it’s small and easy to ignore but people have gotten so bold with it that you have to be within the exact restrictions to fly
@An_Gold

I must say, that this is a very important topic that Nora selected (as always). Seems that it does not matter - what personal bag you could use (especially for not very experienced traveller) - but I understand that importance. First - should be comfortable and not very heavy, but steady. You take all necessary items there and this personal bag stays in front of you, you might get into that bag at least several times during the flight (getting pen, some food, drink perhaps, some warmer clothing, book, phone etc. Your electronics should be protected there. Second - it would be great if this bag can serve as additional support for your legs, during the long flight you will see the difference. And - finally - the bag should be comfortably located above your carry-on (if you fly with carry-on) as you will have long walks in airport.

The major issue with the Bento Bag is the need for 'wheels' for the long haul walks in the airports. There are small foldable trolleys available. Have any of you used these? Are they worth the effort? Thanks for any info you can share.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Месяц назад
I don't use trolleys for my personal item bag, since I'm already wheeling my luggage. The Bento Bag does have a pass-thru strap so you can slide it over your luggage handle, but this pre-supposes you have the right kind of luggage to do this. If you're just bringing the Bento Bag and nothing else, a trolley could work.

On my last trip (to spend time with family in Ohio) I used my United By Blue (R) Evolution 27 L Mini Duffle. It fit pretty well on the handle of my carry-on but was awkward inside the plane. I had also purchased an Osprey Transporter bag but ended up using it as my work bag because it's waterproof, though I may still use it next trip. Like you, I don't really like shoulder straps (due to chronic neck and shoulder pain), so I'll probably try my Cotopaxi Luzon Eighteen backpack next. It's a simple, lightweight bag but has the chest strap so will be secure.

I finally bought you a cup of ☕️ Nora. Thank you for your videos. My fear is having to check my hard shell carry on because of potential lack overhead bin storage. Seems I always get on last and peoples coats and bags are stuffed into the overheads. I had to check my carry on in a flight and I’ve only flown maybe 5 times. I was so 😡 because my whole plan was to not have checked luggage. So I wonder if it will be better to take a duffel along with my backpack so as to make stuffing easier. You think??
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, gate-checking carry-on luggage can happen. Sorry it happened to you! The good news is, often (but not always) when you gate-check a bag, you don't have to wait around for it at the luggage carousel; they store it in a separate hold and make it available at the gate. Not sure what you mean about taking a duffel; do you mean using a duffel instead of a hard-shell so it stuffs into the overhead bin easier? If yes, then YES - that is a viable strategy. It's one of the reasons I like softshell luggage overall for carry-on: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wj_aNrF651s.htmlsi=ur_HIozO_p5-L0EQ Thanks for the coffee! 🙏

@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 10 месяцев назад
My challenge with personal roller bags are twofold: 1) Rolling that plus my rolling luggage would be awkward (though I guess with a pass-thru strap I could roll both as one) 2) I worry about the weight and space that the wheels would take up; I need to maximize personal item bag space for my tech stuff. United Air Lines: 17" x 9" x 10" -- perhaps the most stingy personal item bag (under the seat) in the U.S. One of the few that meets this requirement is the Tom Bihn Night Flight Travel Duffel (20 liters) that was specifically designed to meet those specs. I am able to carry the NFTD and a carry-on. Looking all over online, there are very, very few bags that actually meet the UAL specs.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 2 месяца назад
It's odd, isn't it? Because so many bags can actually fit under the seat in front (including all of the bags I feature in this video). But the airlines tend to specify much smaller dimensions. Perhaps, to allow for leg room.
@Gallery90
@Gallery90 2 месяца назад
@@NoraDunn Leg room seems not to find itself at the top of the airlines' priority lists. One factor for UAL may be the number of aircraft they had with very intrusive legacy under-seat enclosures for the entertainment systems. Bags stuffed in, and not quite getting all the way under, does create a safety/egress problem. The Tom Bihn bag works well, and has the advantage the main bag and the end compartments all opening from the top.

This is good info - I would prefer a backpack style and limit it to 15 liters in size since I'm 5-11 and have clunky feet which need some space for comfort (especially on long haul flights). With a backpack, you can keep your hands free to deal with your carry on suitcase, when at the check-in counter, navigating crowded areas, etc. Also, the smaller the bag, the more likely the air carrier will allow it onboard. On a recent trip to the Philippines, EVA Air was really cracking down on baggage weight. They specify 7 kilos (15.43 pounds) as the limit for carry-on suitcases, my weighed just shy of 8 kilos (~17 pounds) and I had to check it in. That made for a fun experience at baggage claim in Manila 🤣

Dear Nora, did you recommend somewhere insulated bottles (preferably with not very small opening, and steel preferable) - something where you could keep hot water for at least 2-3 hours, which does not take lot of space and - very important - does not leak? I was using thermos by Thermos (0.5 litres) with little cup/cover screwed at the top, was very happy with that and found that it started leaking at opening - no wonder, it served for a very long time. Very useful in a plane and even in a hotel as well (where you could just keep warm or cold water). Try to find something very similar. Thank you very much.

I strongly strongly recommend a Sigg ‘Hot and Cold’. If I make a coffee at the beginning of the working day it’s still a bit too hot to drink at the end of the working day (insert joke about my short working day here…) Since then I’ve also added a couple of beer bottle ‘stubby coolers’ around it, which work really well to add insulation. Really good top either to pour or sip from. Never leaked and my gear gets thrown around a lot.

Nora, thank you so much for your great information on all things travel. Perhaps you can help me with this. I am traveling to Italy in the fall and two of our flights are with “ Lufthansa German Airlines Operated by United Airlines”. On the departing flight from Dulles to Rome, it is a direct flight as noted above. On the way home, we have a flight from Milan to Newark, NJ on “Lufthansa operated by United Airlines” and a connecting flight to Dulles on United. Should I be planning for luggage sizes and restrictions related to United for all flights, or Must I also comply with Lufthansa regulations for two flights? I am thinking since all flights are on United I am only concerned with their regulations, but I need to confirm. You probably covered this at some point, and if so, I apologize. Thanks much!

No I haven't covered this kind of situation so thanks for asking! Personally I would check with both airlines to be sure. Because on the flight back from Milan, even though it's operated by United Airlines, the gate is going to be Lufthansa and you may be subject to Lufthansa's rules.

Great review! I just purchased the Pacsafe® GO anti-theft 34L carryon backpack. It's a clamshell, so it unzips like a suitcase, which is what I was looking for. It meets American Airlines personal item dimensions exactly, and can be compressed to probably fit others, Volume : 34 litres Height : 18.5 inch x Width : 12.6 inch x Depth : 7.9 inch. Weight : 1.64 lbs. I often stay 3 weeks to a month in one place (usually Paris) so I wanted to take a "few more clothes" for weather changes and this drove my criteria. Here's what I can fit inside, without overstuffing it. 2 pairs jeans, 3 short sleeve tees, 1 cardigan, 5 undies, 2 bras, 1 set long pajamas, 1 pair sneakers. In the outside pocket -- iPad, electronic cables, iPhone 15 Pro, Anker power strip, Toiletries ziplock, medicines. I'll try it on my next trip this fall, in addition to my usual Samsonite Black Label (now called Cosmolite) spinner that weighs only 3.8 lbs.

It looks like a great option, too. My most recent trip, I used a shoulder bag personal item and it worked okay. My total combined weight of my two bags was 25 lbs, which I consider my limit for safety and balance. I've had my spinner since 2018, and I can't believe how heavy many of the new spinners are! My older Tumi is 7.8lbs and I just don't carry it anymore. BTW, I've packed that 2014 Tumi Voyager, then packed my Samsonite. All the same clothes fit it, but the hard side doesn't have the pockets. @@NoraDunn Well - I am a hobbiest photographer, so the Tenba is my camera bag - big enough for my essential camera gear, a laptop a tablet and everything I’d need in a flight. I rely on my carryon for all other essentials and it works fine. My wife always has extra space in her personal item, so if we pick up something extra, she has the ability to move it (pending it’s TSA compliant) and such. One very nice thing both bags have is easy access points, so even in crammed economy, we can access all the bag contents without even the need to bring the bag up from beneath the seat in front of us. The Tenba is a messenger bag, and that works for me and my wife’s bag is a backpack, which works for her. Tenba, btw, has a unique feature on their messenger bags - the flap has a zipper allowing you to access the whole bag without the need to open the main flap. I hope that offers some insight!

It is 20L and is shaped like the Bento Bag (and also has no shoulder straps). I pack lighter items in it if I am traveling without a spinner carryon. It is compliant with most airlines at 13" H x 14.5" W x 6.5" D. Uses YKK Vision Tooth zippers and has a dual purpose pass through that can be closed to form a pocket when not used over a luggage handle. Looks spiffy too. Price competitive at USD$150. @NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 5 месяцев назад
Hi Christine! I haven't flown Air Transat for many years, but there are a few airlines out there that have super strict guidelines. Two tips: 1) I don't know if you can pay for an "upgrade" to your luggage allowance or seat that in turn allows more/larger carry on bags, but that can be worthwhile. If you compare the cost of your airfare plus the upgrade, vs major airlines that include luggage in their prices, it should still be cheaper if not comparable. 2) There's no shame in checking a bag! If their dimensions are too strict and you can't upgrade, there's no point getting stressed out about it.

Note: I did not post a link to the bag, only gave the name of the manufacturer, and the place I bought it, Amazon. I thought I’d be doing a service to those who might wish to spend a bit more of their travel budget on the experience, than the luggage (I.e.
