Here is the origins of each of those dishes for anyone wondering. Ramen: In Chinatown Yokohama, some of the residents from china adapted traditional Chinese noodle dishes with Japanese ingredients to sell to Japanese people. Think about like the California roll in the US. It was invent by a Japanese chef living in LA to sell to Americans. Gyoza: The origin of Gyoza is harder to track as there is no 1 original location. The long story short is that they are just a form of steamed dumplings which were a chinese dish that slowly changed to the gyoza we know and love today. Udon: Joey may have a source that I can't find for this, but the sources i am finding state that Udon was a Chinese dish Brought to Japan by a scholar 1200 years ago. Lastly, tempura: in the 16th century, Portuguese traders brought a dish called Peixinhos da horta, which is green beans fried in the exact style that tempura is fried in. They adapted the ingredients from green beans to Japanese ingredients that they had access to since green beans were not available in Japan.

@walkerschlott4518 Месяц назад
@@LumenDArius_RaySo there are 2-3 competing theories for the California Roll. one is of Ichiro Mashita, a LA, CA based Sushi chef. One is of Ken Seusa, a different LA, CA based Sushi chef. The last one is of Hidekazu Tojo, which, like you said, is a Sushi chef from Vancouver, BC, Canada.

In other words, these dishes have been transformed into something completely different from the original cuisine, so they can be called Japanese food. Even pasta, the most likely origin of pasta is that Marco Polo went to China and Chinese rice noodles were transformed into pasta, but no one would say pasta is a Chinese food.

@@ey1902 This is partially untrue and has nothing to do with the original comment, but I’ll entertain it. The “sushi” you’re referring is called narezushi (Japanese transliterated name) and it originated in Southeast Asia (specifically Burma) and was adopted by the Chinese in the 4th century as they expanded their borders. It’s literally raw fish that has been fermented and packed underneath salt. Google it then come back and tell me that it’s the sushi you and the rest of the world eats 🙃. The sushi that’s globally recognized and known to be Japanese is the sushi that’s commonly served to you such as maki, nigiri, chirashi, and various other creative rolls of sushi. These foods were created in Japan in the 18th century. Now, to address the original comment. Yes, it is true the traditional foods we eat and have here in Japan are known to be rather bland these items are called Washoku, however you must keep in mind that these dishes and foods are several centuries old and that the Japanese palate has moved far away from this. This is easy to tell when looking at the Japanese diet today.

Skycrapers, modern buildings, curry, suits, noodles, etc.? These came from foreign countries outside of japan. People also say that their beliefs are different, actually alot of their beliefs they adapted it from the west. The difference is those beliefs stayed with japan while in the west they have abandoned most of it due to progressives.

Yes the Portuguese have a very big cultural influence in Japan. Nagasaki was at one point an entirely Portuguese city. The Portuguese protected Japan from China and Other European powers in the ocean. The only reason Portuguese influence stopped was that the Japanese were converting to Catholicism at an extremely fast rate and the Shogun did not like that. But one of the main reasons Japan unified is still the Portuguese, since the Portuguese introduced and taught Oda Nobunaga how to use firearms.

Love the thinking but this isn't actually true! 天ぷら in Japanese, faithfully spelt out in romaji, would be tenpura. The reason it's spelt tempura is because ん in Japanese actually gets phonetically pronounced a variety of ways depending on the word. This is why 日本橋 in Tokyo, for example, occasionally gets romanised as Nihombashi despite us all recognising the 日本 part as Nihon typically.
