Motherboards can still have a significant difference in performance. Case in point: not having enough full-speed SATA ports due to SATA ports being shared with PCI-E lanes (half-speed for 2 SATA ports, for example) or the PCI-E slot being disabled altogether (full-speed for 2 SATA ports). It's not so simple cut-and-dry that all motherboards will produce the same desired results (speed) and you need to be careful with the number of lanes. Definitely not something the average gamer needs to worry about, but still something to consider if you need a lot or all of your SATA ports to operate at full speed.

Don't use Tunnelbear! I have had a 1 year subscription because Linus said it was good and constantly had problems. I am with another provider now which is waaaaaaaaaay better (and more expensive). Tunnelbear would not work half of the time at all and if it worked it blocked things like TeamSpeak. There are better services out there. They are more expensive too but what do you want with a cheap unusable VPN? I gladly pay more if it works much better.

Should have mentioned customer support (QC and RMA specifically) dealing with a dead Asus product is a nightmare.

Also make sure it is compatible with your cpu. They both need to have the same socket number, e.g. AM3 or LGA 1055 or sth.

The only good answer to this question: Asus. No other mobo manufacturer has as good ram compatibility or quality. Even MSI's expensive gaming mobo's have poor ram compatibility. I've never had a problem with Asus mobo

You've answered this question before Linus. Buy from reputable sellers, and don't get swayed by USB 3.1. extra PCI-E slots or RGB lighting unless you actually need those features. Most relatively cheap motherboards offer what the majority need anyway these days.

Well, even if you're not overclocking, ensuring you get the right number of USB ports of the right version is still important. That goes for SATA ports, expansion slots, and motherboard size. And, of course, ensuring you got the right board for the right CPU. And whether or not you want WiFi integration.

The mobo that came with my PC that I bought back in 2010 still works. The good news is that it came with some nifty features that I don't need to use, like built-in wi-fi and an optical audio output. The bad news is that the socket isn't supported anymore and really the only components I can upgrade are the GPU which I've done and the amount of DDR3 RAM

Just bought my first ever Asrock board. Been Asus for almost a decade since my first build. Asrock Z270 Extreme 4, so far so good. Was cheaper than the comparable Asus (Can't remember which one) that I was looking at, but the Asrock had the mostly Black with some White theme I wanted more than anything in that price range.

Linus, it's not true that on the Intel side only the Z and X series chipsets have native support for overclocking. For example, the MSI B150M has built-in support for overclocking Intel chips, even without a BIOS update. You may want to update your information about this.

It is also important to consider the types, number of, and positioning of PCI slots. For example an upgrade in graphics card could mean a slot becomes obstructed by a fan or heat sink which is a real pain in the ass if you didn't take that into consideration. Ribbon cable does work wonders though.

Btw if someone came to look for a cheap m.2 board i can reccomend this one Asus H110M-A/M.2. I used an intel 600p 256gb on it. Boots and everything works nicely.

It's scientifically proven that activated RGB gives a 4-5 FPS boost in games.

Just came back on this video to comment, that now the Ryzen's 3rd performance is affected by the motherboards bios, well, while it doesn't affect the raw performance (hopefully they don't disrupt it with new defective or inappropriate updates), also idk why, but i felt i need to comment this here :|

I love these kind of videos, but I do have a remark for the editor: stop using that 'plop' sound for every single image popup. In some cases where the changes are not that obvious (like the arrows on the watercooled mobo) it is nice, but it gets annoying when it happens with every single image.

I got myself a msi gaming h110m mATX, the ATX boards were like 50€ more expensives even just regular ones lol.

I feel like alot of the stuff in higher end boards is unnecessary. Especially things like reinforced pci slots or the metal backplate. I've never broken a pci slot, or broken a motherboard while installing it, and I don't know anyone who has. Integrated audio, m.2 support, and a variety of I/O is cool and all, but those can just be added later through pci expansion cards(altough that might not be an option in mini ITX builds)

Hey Linus, how come you never mention the other chipsets? You always start the video with good explanations and then jump up to high end stuff! I do have a high end PC, watercooled blablabla, but I had to built a mid one, and had some difficulties along the road to find a nice MB ($/perf). You could just go a little deeper on their features, 'cause most of your audience don't have money for that.

i currently have a Asrock 970 "extreme" 3, with the amd FX 8120. one big problem that have been re-occurring is the northbridge overheating and thus throttling the CPU. i actually tried a northbridge fan and currently run the wintercold air directly onto the NB, yet it still overclocks on stock CPU speeds as the northbridge simply gets too hot on 60% cpu load or more (more load = more often throttles) want to upgrade the motherboard for a Gigabyte 990FX which also doesn't specifiy needing a top-down cpu cooling for better cooling efficiency around the cpu. so i'm betting that i'll be able to finally overclock my FX from 3.1 to about 4,something Ghz? anyone? the board is 160,- over here and that's pretty much as far as the budget allows me. ty in advance!

I didn't know some of the higher end boards had some of these things, but all I personally need is a PCI slot lol. I use a shitty Micro ATX 1150 board with only two RAM slots and no HDMI. It's also missing a billion other things, but it gets the job done. Though, built-in Wifi would've been nice.

my cheap asrock (the worst pun pls kill me) board actually makes me dream nightmares when i hear about budget boards. it catched on fire randomly and i got a replacement model. when using the replacement unit more problems accumulated over time. the pci express slots are shit. when i put my pc to sleep i have no video signal when the gpu is in the first slot and switching it to the second started giving me the same problems a few months after. the cpu power delivery is shit even thou the massive heatsink on the mosfets suggests it must handle quite a lot of power. the microphone input has a lot of noise and people on skype and cs go cant hear shit when i speak and the audio circuitry. i actually consider buying new better one

what about VRM? you talked about phases but not TDP. if you get a board with a 100w TDP and a CPU with a TDP that is 125w then you could fry not just your board, but everything in your rig. graphics card could die, hard drive or even a power supply.
