No god-awful intro begging me to subscribe. Thank you. AMD with their Ryzen line has made their chipsets easily understandable. Three tiers, easy enough to understand. And all Ryzen chipsets should work with all Ryzen processors. It's about as easy as it gets. Intel is still confusing as hell. They keep switching things every time they come out with a processor line.

this would have helped so much 3 months ago; bought a b350f motherboard with a ryzen 5 2600, luckily my workplace/retailer has a great return policy and i could upgrade to a b450f for barely 10 dollars more. pretty satisfied with the overall experience.

I know one CPU that Linus has never reviewed is one that my older Sony desktop has, which is an Intel Pentium D 2.8 ghz and the manufacture date shows July of 2005. Still works fine for light tasks.

It's easy. #1 - board has to support Intel. #2 - they must be brand by either Intel or ASUS. #3 - must be ATX. #4 - must have at leastv2 PCI slots.

i have a b350 board running 2 rx580's in crossfire. so you don't need the b450 for crossfire. it can be done on a b350.

AMD chipsets are easier to understand. A is non overclockable, B is overclockable with Crossfire, X is overclockable with SLI + Crossfire. As the 2nd digit goes up, more PCIe, more SATA, and more USB. Then Threadripper is 99, which is for enthusiasts with one option.

I was building my desktop a month ago, and I was looking for the Msi z270 Arctic because that is the only white motherboard overclockable for my i5-9600k within my budget and listed available online, but then it was out of stock when I went to the store. So I chose another one that is a little bit more expensive, the Msi b360 gaming Arctic. Because I just found it in the shop without knowing the chipset and not asking a thing (and also just want to be done with it), I thought well this could be a good replacement since it's newer, then I went home and search more about it. Boom stuck in base clock. (I also have to bring the motherboard back to the store to update the BIOS so it will support the 9th gen CPU) 😵😵😵

Motherboards are confusing enough, but the retailer who don't even understand it's own product is more confusing. I asked if they had 32GB Optane memory and they asked me, SSD? I said, no, Intel Optane Memory™. Then someone behind laugh saying that they don't sell 32GB SSD. And the next one, technician convincing my mother to use a NVMe SSD, but I checked online that the Macbookpro mid-2010, mid-2012 have no designated pcie for the NVMe. eeeee. Really wonder if my country have actual people who go online and search for clues.

Some motherboards are a little fucked up with IOMMU and others are totaly fucked up with IOMMU. Why are the SLI-graphics slots the only PCIe slots which get's in another iommu-groups? Why do the motherboard renumber the PCIe slots if you instert a card in the very first slot. Why do only one slot work in compatiblety mode and if the the graphic adapter is in the slot you can't boot from an USB-Device in the same iommu group? Why they don't print it in the handbook, where to put your cards to get specific iommu groups. ACS might be working, but it's not the same as iommu (and why the change iommu grouping in bios updates without notice). IOMMU is an security feature, witch is nessary! The USB-c 3.1 port is in the same group as most other devices. WHY? Why need an USB-C device direct acces to the SATA controller wich PCI peer to peer? Ok BIOS is a hell lot easier then dts and dtb files.

a lot of people dont know what a chipset is.. theres a ton of stuff newbs learn about pcs but they dont know chipsets are whats good about mobos. they should explain further a mobo has a chipset which is just as vital as a good gpu or cpu.

linus left out that intel H?70 has 20+ pci-e lanes, B?60/50 has 12+ pci-e lanes and H?10 only has 6+pci-e lanes but is designed for mini-itx builds.

I don't overclock so I just get the cheapest board that has the ports I need.

M.2 WATCH OUT. Be sure that it is PCIE and NOT sata. Also be sure it uses PCIE X4 and not X2.

They name their chipsets like Mercedes and BMW name their cars... if you know what the letters and numbers mean, it can tell you a lot about the car. For example, Mercedes uses a letter for the class and a number for the engine displacement in centiliters (S500 = S-Class, 5.0L engine) and BMW uses 3 numbers, the first one is the series number and the second 2 numbers are engine displacement in decaliters, the the letters at the end indicates some kinds of features on the car (745d = 7 series, 4.5L engine, diesel). Everything should have similar nomenclature conventions.

You just ignored or neglected intel h170/h270/h370 chipsets, Motherboards with these chipsets are the best if you do not like overclocking.

Tbh I just look how it looks and if it's an if the letter is high. Sure this is only for dry shopping, where I quickly look how expensive a system would be. This is without proper research. Still it's important what IO the board has. The USB count is very important, especially for front USB and what type. USB 2 is not that interesting. You probably only need 2 - 4 for some HID or other stuff that don't need these speeds like a printer or gamepad. What's more confusing is the different Ram Speeds. A Mainboard might support a wide range of ram but a cpu has only one speed listed. More speed costs more money and it should be stable and be supported.

Question, what if I have X "series" motherboard. Would lower end cpus still be compatible with it or the motherboard should ALWAYS be compatible with the processor at any scenario
