Well done Alex , was so worried you were going to recomend a 14 or bigger , I'm 61 years old now and the marshal town 13 x5 was always the weapon of choice even forty years ago , I still have my first ever trowel , a13 x5 , its now just over four inches wide and great for dry skating up your walls , keep up the good work .

😂 thank god for that. I’ve been using a 13incher since I started plastering around 13years ago and everyone calls it my “little tikes trowel” but I absolutely love it and I’m so confident in its finish. Honestly I’ve probably been trying to get used to bigger trowels just because I thought I was less superior haha! Thanks mate! 13incher will be ok order!

I am not a plasterer but have learned it over the years as I have done a lot of renovation work. I have various trowels and agree with you about the size. I have also found stainless steel trowels a little problematic as it does not take much for the plaster you have loaded onto the trowel to slip off and end up on your boots ! Whereas carbon steel trowels tend to hold the plaster on more - I presume this is because of the surface being slightly pitted by oxidation (rusting). I think tis also helps in the distribution of the plaster as you do the first layin on stroke. This is just my opinion - other may have theirs of course !
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 года назад
I like this comment. I completely agree. In our video, Carbon VS Stainless I mention the plaster rolls off the trowel much nicer, IMO because of the surface pitting/rust. Good comment. Thanks for your opinion

Ive used an 11" for a long time, with skimming first coat with the 11" second coat with an 18" xtralite leaves very little troweling up to be done. All the later troweling i use the 11" Though like most i have loads of trowels its nice to have the right size when you need it.
@headleshydra
@headleshydra 3 месяца назад
I learned with a 13 inch trowel, used it for years, then went to 16 and 18inch for skimming on board. WOULD NOT recommend big trowels for sand and cement etc, this is where the strain comes. BUT for skimming, the lack of pressure doesn't really matter. Also, a 6 metre long wall would need 18 strokes with a 13 inch, but only 13 strokes with a 18inch trowel...Saving your knees/shoulder/back from bending over 5-10-15-20x per wall/ceiling.

Bought the Nela premium for coating. Fuck me, lines EVERYWHERE... Tried to persevere but don't do much rendering and as I only had an 11 inch permashape marshaltown for skimming I bit the bullet and got the 14 inch Marshalltown permashape (gold handle) honestly, what a difference straight out the box. I use that and the Nela black edition (absolute monster for final stages)
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 года назад
I agree. Louie had the 16” Nela Premium. A very flat trowel. Tbh the 14” carbon was like that as well. Not the case with the 13” we just bought.
@nicholasburton1474

The best trowel depends on what your doing ! But as you get older smaller trowels will win because the bigger trowels just cause tennis elbow and carpel tunnel if your doing 3-4 bag multi finish hits

Great videos.. What steps do you have to do to control the rust on a carbon also what one do you have 13 inch ? Nela marshall?
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 года назад
Tbh, I’m a bit lazy with stopping the rust as we use them every day. But generally we dip them in vinegar over night to turn them black, to easy on the rust. Then if we do apply oil, all you need is to soak a rag in WD40 and give it a wipe over once you have finished using the trowel.

I love the comment. I know what you mean, the tops are a bit dirty. It’s not that I don’t clean them every day. Just the rubbish builds up so quick. I usually bicarbonate them every 6 months. I’m really impressed with the Nela Carbon. It’s our go to at the moment.

@@AlexMorleyPlastering im very lucky to have a very well trained labourer... I get a clean splash bucket for every pass of the wall, every trowel gets rubbed with wet and dry before returning to the van and if we on a job more than a day we soak the skim buckets over night so they come up like new... Im a decent spread and get a decent finish but dont put on nowhere near as much as a lot of other plasterers but thats why i only do domestics and im booked for months in advanced...we go above and beyond in sheeting and keeping customers houses clean.... .. Loving your content pal, keep the vids coming 👍

So I'm a little confused! You say the Marshaltowns are bullet proof and you have many of them, but they're not the ones you use and you prefer carbon steel (Ox?) for their finish. As a DIYer looking into plastering his own walls, which of the two would you recommend? And can you recommend a specific one?

No problem. This is the one we are currently breaking in. We also have the Nela wooded handle on it which we prefer. www.plasterers1stopshop.co.uk/product/nela-carbon-steel-trowel-13-x-4-75/ Probably one of the best trowels to break in that I have ever had.

Thanks for the great video Alex, Going to attempt my first ceiling soon and I'm planning on buying a Marshalltown Permashape 13x5inch finishing trowel. Would that be a good trowel for a beginner? and would I be ok doing all stages with that one trowel, coupled with a speed skim to help get it flatter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 года назад
Yes that’s a good trowel. I’d probably go for an ultra lite if your going SS. it breaks in a bit faster. It’s totally possible to get a nice finish with 1 trowel. You just have to be a bit more tuned up on the timings to stop the plaster dragging and causing higher stripes.

the problem with 14 inch is it take longer to put plaster on the wall
@anthonystewart677
@anthonystewart677 2 года назад
Years ago, I shrunk my Tyzack down to less than 11 inches and could still blitz the big trowel club that only started to develop in the mid-90s. Additionally, with reference to skimming, a lot of today's plasterers really do not polish up a wall properly and nor do they do what is required of plaster in the first place, which is to secure with good adhesion to any background. They rely on lashings of SBA or PVA to keep the stuff to the surface, especially ceilings, and over time their work becomes friable within a couple of years and falls off... and talk about edges on old houses...dear me...
