Sounds like Neil Young's Arc. A purposeful recording of 45 minutes of nothing but guitar feedback loops edited together.

Metal machine is pure garbage. It shouldn't have been released to begin with and why it's still in print today I have no idea. If u want to hear metal machine go out into your garage and play with your power tools. Lou Reed put this album out just to piss off RCA records. Neil young did similar things to geffen. But somewhere some kid saved up his allowance to buy the new Lou Reed album and came home with that crap. How was this even distributed? Only reason to own this is pure nostalgia or the sake of collecting. It's pure trash. Lou Reed being the prick that he was in full circle.

Ha! I've HAD quite few labels off center and double labels on Columbia as well-interesting. Another oddity, when Tom Petty's New Moon Fever came out, I picked up the cassette, went to play it in my car and it was playing The Temptations. Big Temptations fan here but when I purchase Tom Petty that's what I except LOL-luckily, I was still in the Peach's parking lot, and they played it in the store b/c they never had that happen before and everybody cracked up. Yes, I did get a correct copy of Full Moon Fever that day.

I have the 7" single "Zerox" by Adam & the Ants - B-Side should be "Whip in my valise" - There was a limited edition with a live version of "You're so physical" on the B-side. My copy happened during the change-over at the plant, I have cover and label of the standard version, but the record plays the limited edition on the B-side. Apparently, fewer than 300 got out into circulation before the mistake was caught.

In 1976 I bought the album The Compleat Dancing Master by Ashley Hutchings and John Kirkpatrick. Loved it, but I did notice that there was something strange about the track listing on the label not matching up with the music. It was many years before I learned that my copy had side two from a different Ashley Hutchings album, Rattlebone and Ploughjack. Both albums are very similar in concept, being made up of old British folk dance music interspersed with historical readings, so it wasn't obvious that I was listening to side one of one album and side two of another.

About a year ago I ordered Steely Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill" from Amazon and both sides had the "A" side label. I returned it for exchange and it was the same way, so I ended up getting a good copy from Acoustic Sounds. Last week I was at Walmart and bought four LPs, one of which was Stone Temple Pilots "Core" on red splatter vinyl. I have never seen a record with so many surface defects, with pits and bubbles galore. That's why I always prefer black vinyl which makes it easier to see any problems, unlike crap like the clear or multi-color ones.

Hey Robert! We just got 24 inches of snow here in Colorado so I’ve been stuck in the house. Listened to a lot of 45’s. I run my turntables through a PA system and you can really tell the difference in sound quality of records. I was blown away by how awesome most of my 50’s 45’s sounded. Especially The Elegants Little Star. That’s a 68 year old piece of vinyl. My roommate who is the used guy at the local record store confirmed this to me. 50’s records were made really well. It was a burgeoning industry then and quality was important. Just some food for thought. Rock On!
@RobertFithen
@RobertFithen 4 месяца назад
They were usually cut really hot. I've heard that, in those days, several masters were cut by different people and the label bosses would pick their favorite and that one was used for pressing. So there was competition between cutters. Also, "Littls Star" was one of the first records I ever owned. I still have it.

I've come across many of these same issues, but my most interesting misprint is for the 2 LP WHAM! compilation that came out last year. The back cover gives the correct running order of each side, but has two A5's, all of side C is C1, all of aide D is D1. There is an insert card with a note from Andrew Ridgeley acknowledging and apologizing for the error, and said rather than having reprints done for free, it would use less resources to include the card instead.

My copy of Frank Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours" also has side B label on both sides (no pressing problems). My '78 reissue of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" says "stereo" everywhere, but it's actually the mono version. My copy of Tesla's "Five Man Acoustical Jam" has all four labels in the correct order, but the first record has sides 1 and 3, and the second LP has sides 2 and 4. The back cover of "The Challengers at the Teenage Fair" reads "The Challangers at the Teen-age Fair".
@vwestlife
@vwestlife 4 месяца назад
I've encountered quite a few albums from the late 1960s which have the jacket and labels for the mono version, but play in stereo. Consumer demand for mono LPs was declining rapidly, and by then virtually all newer mono record players could play stereo records without any fear of damaging them, so it was cheaper for the record companies to press all copies of an album in stereo and then give some of them the catalog number for the mono version, rather than do a separate mono pressing.
@RobertFithen

Good topic Robert. Misprints and errors to a stamp collector are called "freaks" for obvious reasons. When I was in college radio, 1969, the station was shipped the latest releases from Paula Records, out of Shreveport LA. Two lps that I liked and played on air were "Next Exit" by Five by Five (LPS-2202) and "The Uniques" by the Uniques (LPS-2204). I bought a stock copy of "Next Exit" the following year. Then just a few years ago I bought "The Uniques" on eBay in still sealed condition. When that record arrived, I broke the shrink-wrap and enjoyed listening to Side 1, sounding just fine like it did in college. Then I flipped the album over to play side 2 and was in for a shock -- it was the side 2 label for "Next Exit" by Five by Five. The music on the platter, however, was side 2, "The Uniques." I read that the Paula-Ronn-Jewel conglomerate used the same pressing plant as Chess Records in Chicago.

Wasn't The Uniques the band that Joe Stampley was in?
@pgh45rpms
@pgh45rpms 4 месяца назад
@@RobertFithen You're right. The Uniques breakout chart hit was "Not Too Long Ago," 1965. "All These Things," a romantic ballad, 1966. Their major fanbase was the Deep South and Gulf Coast area. I saw them in concert with the Grass Roots in San Angelo TX, 1970. Joe and his brother Bobby Stampley formed the Uniques. Joe was lead singer/keyboards/contributing songwriter; Bobby on bass guitar. Uniques later signed with Paramount Records in 1970, but released only four Paramount singles. By 1972 the band had broken up and Joe launched a very successful career in country music. He's still performing solo and with partner Moe Bandy.

I've had a few mispressings, mostly missing labels, double labels, and even a recent 8 track cartirgde recently that was something else entirely. Worst one I had was situational. I was into Erausre a lot in the late 1980s, and was after one particular remix of Supernature. Couldn't find it anywhere, and in the end I was visiting somewhere in Wales and found one. Walked all the way back to the car and thought "I'll check this record before I go" and was glad I did. The bloody label had been smeared all over the record. So I had to march all the way back to the shop and get my money back. Was not impressed. Still never found that 12".

I haven't run into too many of these things. My first copy of Born to Run had the John Landau misprint. One of the LPs in my Kids Are Alright album had the same label on both sides. My Bob Dylan Tempest album had two of the same LP. I've had quite a few off center LPs though, which I find far more annoying sound-wise than warping.

I have a few. I have a comp called English Cats & Others on the Brookville label that plays side 4 on both sides of disc two. New Order’s Substance 87 for the CD also included all of the b-sides of the singles. The song titled “Mesh” is actually the song “Cries And Whispers”. Also the song “The Perfect Kiss” is listed as “Perfect Kiss”. I’ll be good and keep it to those examples.

I've had lots of examples. A recent was Coltrane's A Love Supreme, 3LP set that only had 4 of the six sides with the last record a duplicate of the second record. Misprints are all over the place. Also remember once I got a VU box in the 90's - the Peel Slowly one - but the first cd was a '90's female r&b group, the rest being what you'd expect.

I have been putting my friend's records into Discogs for him lately. He has an off-center copy of James Gang Rides Again that was making me fear for my stylus. So much swaying back and forth. Sounded like it was dying. I was ironically checking it to make sure the "Bolero" section was indeed removed (and not just removed from the label and jacket). I have read that the Blues Magoos stereo mispressing might not have actually been a mispressing at all, but a form of market research. Like you said, you were not supposed to play stereo records with mono cartridges (because the stylus does not move up and down). Mercury were supposedly trying to get a read on how many people were still using mono-only cartridges (who would then return those copies as defective when they didn't play right). There are other Mercury releases from that period that were "secretly stereo," presumably for this purpose. Again, just something I read (in a few places). Not an original theory. Wow, that looks like a Beyonce album I could enjoy!

If you find a printing error on coins or paper money; you've got real money! And a lot of it. I remember a guy that came all the way from Wyoming for a misprinted 5 dollar bill I had. I live in the east. He didn't want to take a chance of me mailing it. Why not big money on record misprints? The way many record collectors buy like crazy; records are worth more than money. Here are some errors I discovered. 1. An album by Frank Zappa says on the cover Shiek Yerbouty, instead of Shake Your Booty. Ironically enough, a promo album called Shake Your Booty by K C. and the Sunshine Band, says on the back cover Casey & The Sunshine Band. Mistakes on 78 rpm records were common. My copy of Moon Over Kalamazoo by Elijah Rathbone, clearly shows rings like Saturn going around it. Didn't they ever look up and see what the moon looks like? Another 78 titled I Told You Don't Move While I'm Shaving You, Now We Need Some Rags by The Barbers Of Seville, NOT The Barbers Of Civil, like it says on the back cover. My 78 copy of Bush Mop by The Toronto Cardinals says The Toronto Robins on the side 2 label, on the song Whisper Way More Loudly. My 78 rpm copy of Bushwacked By Fate by The Bohemeths says The Bohemians on the side 2 label and the song I Wish You'd Fall Into The Wishing Well And Get Covered Up With Coins. My 78 copy of Me Myself And Rye by Zederiah Pike says Zederiah Poke on the side 2 label on the song Wash My Clothes More Often Or Else. Ridiculous Errors! I wish records were money.

I have an English pressing of the first Mott the Hoople album with side one having a different order of songs even though the label had the authorized track listing printed on it. I actually prefer this song sequencing over the standard one.

Electric Landlady was a typo on an early reference acetate. That info is in the episode of Classic Albums.

I have a cd copy of Opeth - Morningrise. It’s misspelled as MORNIGRISE (missing the second N) on the spine of the CD case. Also, Helmet’s debut album Strap It On has a song called “Bad Mood,” but in the booklet it’s spelled “Bad Moon.”

I have a record by The Beatles, it has a white cover but it doesn’t have The White Album printed on the jacket or label 😢. Same with the record that has baby dolls and animal carcass. I can’t find The Butcher Cover anywhere on the record or the jacket. Mistakes galore

Not vinyl specifically, but early production runs of The Cars “Panorama” 8-track cart have the song printed as “Misfit Kit” on Program 1 instead of “Misfit Kid.”

I had a MOV reissue of "Goodbye And Hello" by Tim Buckley whiich had completely something else on the B-Side (a Deep Purple spin-off record, IIRC). But to complete the Beatles' list, there's a French issue of Abbey Road where "The End" is presented under its original title, "Ending". Weird thing is that is not a first-press mistake as this pressing is from the late 1970's...

I had a very odd encounter with somebody on Discogs who altered my entry of a Beethoven symphony and then claimed it was a misprint. Yet they couldn't back it up. The far more likely explanation is that their copy was simply misplaced into the wrong jacket...

The oddest mispressing I have is “Oh Good Grief!” by Vince Guaraldi. Side one is indeed the Guaraldi, but side 2 is “Anthem Of The Sun” by the Grateful Dead. The Grateful Dead album has a catalog number just 2 numbers higher than the Guaraldi album.

Even 78 crazy stuff. Appropriate labels for both Blind Lemon Jefferson songs but plays the same tune on both sides. Uncle Dave Macon 78 same label on both sides but luckily two different songs (Never make love no more/Cross Eyed Butcher). Then for an LP Jethro Tull on a green label Chrysalis label Aqualung LP, side one and side 2 labels are appropriate but the lp on side 2 plays a side of Tulls A Passion Play LP.

The mid-2010s pressing of Metallica’s Garage Inc were messed up. The side withGarage Days Re-revisited was at pressed at the wrong speed (like 40 rpm…not 33 and not 45). They sent me a new one…same issue, so I got a refund. Later I got a turntable with pitch adjustment and boom..no problem….that and I got a new copy of the $5.98 EP.

The CD copy of the Melvins’ Ozma album included their previous album Gluey Porch Treatments as bonus material, however even Wikipedia points this out: “The CD version includes the entire Gluey Porch Treatments album. The track listing that is printed on the CD lists 34 tracks, but the CD only has 33 tracks. This is due to ‘Paperbacks’ and ‘Happy Grey or Black’ being mistakenly combined on track 23 and not split into separate tracks as credited.”

One more messed up music, back in the 80's I was a member of Columbia House records and I ordered a cassette of Sammy Hagar and it did not have any tape in it. I went to KMART and exchanged it for the same tape. It would take forever to have Columbia House to send a new tape. They already sent me the wrong tape for what I ordered and it took a long time to get what I ordered. They sent me Simon and Garfunkel live in Central Park. It's funny know as I have it on CD including Simon and Garfunkel complete catalog. Lol
