Which SNES Caveman Platformers Are Worth Playing Today? - SNESdrunk 

Joe and Mac, the original, was one of two games that my brother and I received on Christmas day along with our awesome new SNES. The SNES was extra special for us because our mother swore that after the NES, they wouldn't buy us another game console (my mom had some sort of really weird distaste for us playing video games and I'm not sure why other than the typical "you should be outside playing," which we still did all the time) so my grandma decided to get it for us instead! Thank you, grandma! Of course the ONLY thing we wanted to do on Christmas day was play the SNES and it was glorious. We had a TON of fun with that game, especially since it was co-op. The dinosaurs straight up blew our minds. Really great artwork that seemed miles better than anything I had seen on NES. It's hard to really comprehend just how mind-blowingly better the SNES seemed than the NES when it was brand new, but Joe and Mac was definitely a major highlight. It's also worth mentioning that me and my brother were SUPER into dinosaurs around that time, so that made the game extra cool... and now that I think about it, that's probably why they bought us that particular game. Huh. I never realized that until just now. Wow.

Those prices are insane for those games now, especially considering they were dirt cheap used even while the SNES was alive as chuck rock and joe and mac were everywhere back then.

Congo's Capers deserves a lot more love, I noticed it get sleighted in another video, it might start off not too much different then a single player Joe and Mac but I feel like the later game is where it really shines. You even get a Megaman level select after playing so far into the game and then you start getting some interesting bosses and levels.

Not really a caveman game but I really loved E.V.O back in the day.

My favorite caveman game was prehistorik man. Seriously a hidden treat but one of the best in my opinion.

There is one good thing about the movie-based Flintstones game, and that is that it was from Ocean, which had some oddly great music in their otherwise terrible licensed games.

I’m low-key obsessed with Super Bonk. It’s so bizarre and inventive. Very Japanese and very 90’s.

I don't think the obsession was directly with Cavemen/Neanderthals but more so with Dinosaurs and Prehistoric times.

I watched this to see what you had to say about the Flintstones game (not the movie one). I played it once in my life, some 25 years ago, one night when I stayed over at a friend's house. We stayed up until 2 or 3 playing deep into that game. I couldn't remember if it was actually good, or if I was just remembering the fun time I had playing games with a friend.

Prehistorik Man deserves more of a shout-out than this imo. It looks good, it's got a certain charm and it has some nice ideas and mechanics as you progress. It's not an easy game, but I don't put that down to the controls especially, seasoned platformer fans will pick up it's nuances pretty quickly I feel.. Would recommend!

Oh man, Joe & Mac was one of the very first SNES games I bought with my own money and I played the hello out of it! Still loving plowing through it occasionally, both single player and 2-player.

Joe and Mac is still one of my favorite SNES games especially for multiplayer, Super Bonk on the other hand I have never completed a playthrough because it just feels like I'm constantly wondering around aimlessly with no real goal or objective beside smashing things with my face.

I would recommend Prehistorik man. It's in my top 10 SNES games along with Link to the Past, Breath of Fire, Chrono trigger and Super Mario World. There is so much variety in the gameplay and the later levels becomes a serious challenge. I would have loved to play a port again.

I remember chuck rock on my amiga. Big nostalgia for that one. I think that it has a bunch of sequels on the home computers that didn't make it to the snes.

NSMB DS abilities to grow and shrink were taken from Super Bonk 😮

The Flintstones actually requires you to hold the jump button in order to grab ledges. Couple that with jumping from beside the ledge and then moving toward it mid air and you should almost never fail to grab it. Being able to charge the rock throw distance and pick thrown rocks and bowling balls back up from the ground are nice touches too. My only complaints about this game are the timer, given that the levels have some possible amount of sidetracking, and that Fred's club attack has a very short range, which forces you to be almost on top of stuff for it to hit. The fact that stuff can hit you from off-screen is pretty annoying too.

Reminds me of how, for some reason, there were a bunch of caveman slapstick comedy films made in Italy for a period of time.

If anyone is interested, you can get the 2 Joe & Mac arcade games on the Switch eShop now. There's the original arcade game(mentioned in the video) and Joe & Mac Returns(not mentioned in the video because it never got ported to any home consoles).

There was a review of prehistoric man I read saying the collision detection was terrible. Never played it myself

You should check out remakes of SNES games on the GBA, since there were so many on that system.

Thanks for the video. My preference for Joe and Mac is to the Mega Drive version. My gripe with the SNES version is it's been made more into a platformer vs a side-scrolling action game of the arcade release. Features missing include missing scenes of the story of kidnapped cave-women and notably one well endowed one kidnapper had trouble with (which the girls coming from off screen kissing the main characters being out of no-where as a result), missing charged shot in the SNES version lengthening the boss fights and re-arranged level layout but this is just a nit pick. This might also be my Europe bias talking and not being part of this videos talking point, something for SEGAdrunk. Bonk is a weird one due to missing the pun from Japanese being PC-Genjin: PC Engine (Turbografx-16) & BC "caveman/caveboy"

I had no idea so many caveman games exist.

I always hated that there was so charging the items on the SNES version. I was so used to the arcade version of Joe and Mac at the rec center i went to after school every day.

I loved Chuck Rock and Chuck Rock 2: Son of Chuck (surprised you didn’t mention No.2 was it not released on the SNES?) when I was younger. I personally still think they’re both worth playing even today

In school we play a lot Prehistoric Man in WIndows 95 and Sonic 2 with the genesis emulator, and that weird Super Mario Bros. for DOS with only 4 levels, sloppy as hell.
