I agree with with alot games on ur list but final fight snes is way better ..mighty final fight is fun.battle toads on nes is a diffrent game..i borrowed the snes battle toads off a friend once ..rockin good time.have ubtryed battle toads double dragon??that game was awesome..my favorite battle toads game..i luv too try the nes version just once...great video snes drunk.i really enjoyed it even if i disagreed with final fight..u got an awesome channel..i watch everthing u put out.rock on snesdrunk..
I mean how about just Batman nes vs Batman returns ? Returns is a great beat em up But Batman on the nes is an arguably better more diverse game with a killer soundtrack
It's not just multiple scrolling missing. Lightening flashes don't illuminate (level 3-1 I think) the environment in Ninja Gaiden 2. It is permanently lit up. There is no lava rising in level 2-2 of Ninja Gaiden 3. The list of awfulness goes on and on.
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy was a HUGE disappointment for me as well! I was expecting a SMB All-Stars treatment and was super excited because I only was able to play and beat NG 2 and only rented 3 and never was able to touch 1. Then I saw the screenshots and later played it via emulation and what a major letdown. ☹
Cinemassacre, Dunkey, Gaming Historian, Jim Sterling, Pat the NES Punk, Day[9]. Those are all the general gaming channels I watch. In rough order of favorites. This channel would fit somewhere in there for me for sure. Cinemassacre is probably my favorite channel on youtube so I am biased there. AVGN episodes helped me out when I was kinda, I don't want to say depressed but it was a rough patch.
Better versions on ZX Spectrum Vs NES would be a great video. Rainbow Islands plays better on Speccy than every version outside of TGCD of the versions at the time
What happened with Tecmo in the 16-bit era? They had so many great games on the NES (Ninja Gaiden, Rygar, Tecmo Super Bowl, Solomon's Key, Star Force, etc.), and then did but basically make ports for the SNES.
The best version of Battletoads true sequel: Battletoads & Double Dragon was the NES version. It used the same game engine as the original, which just felt way more satisfying and smooth than all its later ports (including to the SNES). Battlemaniacs was much easier than NES Battletoads and had way better cartoony graphics, but I still prefer the original.
Battletoads and Double Dragon is so much easier than those other games. It feels like a normal game. while regular Battletoads feels like the developers hated children. lol
Fun fact: the SNES and NES use the exact same control input circuitry. That is, you can actually take an NES controller, splice its wires into the corresponding wires on the plug of an SNES controller, and it will function on an SNES. Obviously within the limits of the buttons on an NES controller, but the SNES can read it and interact with it. Here's the fun fact though: the SNES will read the NES controller's A and B buttons as the B and Y respectively of an SNES pad. That means that the SNES Ninja Gaidan trilogy had to be *explicitly programmed* to read the buttons incorrectly.
Dude, I'm sure you're sick of me saying this, but damn. Your content is GOLD! I've been a subscriber for a while now and I'm so surprised you dont have more subscribers than you currently have. Seriously great content. I'm dedicated for the life of your channel.
Your reviews are some of the most insightful and thoughtful in the retro game review genre, and I really enjoy these comparison videos, as well, they provide an unexpected perspective. Thanks!
Paper Boy 2 on SNES is really awesome of you use the L and R triggers to throw papers. I didn't even know that NES had a paper boy 2. I will have to look for it
I'm still proud to say I've beaten Battletoads on the nes. STILL working on jim power and smw jump though (the latter of which I've almost conquered thanks to it actually being saveable).
Smashing accomplishment! Visuals are better on Sega I've noticed. I'm glad prices are low on this game; I plan on picking up a Genesis and snagging it one day!
I beat Battletoads. It's definitely challenging but the difficulty is a little overrated compared to other games on the system that aren't as popular. For a good time try beating Bump n Jump or Ikari Warriors without the ABBA code.
I’d say grab either the Super Retrocade from Retro-Bit or that handheld they did last year. I believe it’s on both of them. Luckily for me, the NES was still my only console when it came out, so I was still paying attention to the games that came out somewhat, and I managed to get it either for Christmas or my birthday when it came out (don’t remember exactly what part of the year it was released, but it was close to one of those two days).
3:10 Dude, do you know HOW MANY people I have told that exact same thing about it being a remake and getting the reply back "NO IT'S NOT!" Thank you for putting it out there as well and after playing Battletoads in Battlemaniacs for the past 25 yrs I STILL can't get past that turbo tunnel stage, the last segment is insane.
It's a weird case, really. They're probably disagreeing with you because it's not a 1:1 re-creation. Still, every level is based on one from the original game. Maybe it's a "re-imagining?"
Most of the arguments I was involved in were along the lines of "No, it's a 100% new game!" ignoring the level structure being very similar in nature. The game reminds me more along the lines of when there was the HD versions of Castle of Illusion and Duck Tales, were similar but not 1:1. Either way I still enjoy the hell out of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs even if I cant get past the turbo tunnel, and that bonus stage music is to die for.
This video literally made me go out and buy Rare Replays for my X-Box One so I could try out Battletoads Arcade. Plus it has Banjo and Kazooee along with some other great Rare titles! Too bad you couldn't be credited from the sale because you'd deserve it.
I really love using L and R to throw papers on Paper Boy 2 for some reason. It's what makes the game for me. Will definitely try it out on Nes when I get the chance
yeah I really wish Tecmo would have done more to upgrade Ninja Gaiden, the one on the PCEngine looks great aside from the choppy backgrounds - I would love to have the trilogy re done in that true 16bit art style
You should check out The Messenger that came out last week. Ninja Gaiden style game in both 8 bit and 16 bit art style, that you switch between. It's a metroidvania though, just warning you if you're like me and tend to not like those kinda games.
I had wished that SNES had the arcade ports of Ninja Gaiden and Battletoads - they just got remakes of the nes ports of the arcade games. As said, Battle toads for the arcade is the way to play it, and it'd be nice to have a snes rom of that game, as well as the more action oriented ninja gaiden game which had grappling.
"If you're going to suffer through a Battletoads game...." Can't say that didn't hurt so good.I love Battletoads, but the game i certainly a pain.... Don't turn back Battletoads is only as good as your infinite patience
I always love watching these video's when I've got some time to kill. Plus they also make up for some great research as I add some of these games to my wishlist. Keep up the great work! Kind regards from Holland! And have a great rest of your day!
I saw the title and thought "Ninja Gaiden". Immediate gratification. Seriously, the soundtrack doesn't even come close to capturing the feel of the music. It's like they just threw a bunch of sound fonts in bag, shook it up, and grabbed the first few for each track.
Jeroen Tel did the music of the NES Robocop 3 by the way. Also, Super Ninja Boy is actually the first in the Super Chinese World series (Its sequels were Japan only, which are better than the first one) - a sub series of which Kung Fu Heroes also came from (Little Ninja Bros is known as Super Chinese 2 in Japan and was a sequel to Kung Fu Heroes)
Keep up the good work. There are so many great old games that people don't know about people like you who slog through the catalogs and sort out the good from the crap are essential to letting new and old people know what to play. I have played many old games that I never even heard of back in the day from watching your videos, and I am somewhat familiar with these systems, I was alive and played them but between the NES, SNES and Sega we are talking a couple thousand games... Thanks. I am going to try a couple of the ones you mentioned here, I never heard of this Final Fight for NES, looks fun.
Interesting topic. I recall that the Ninja Gaiden compilation on SNES is also missing music, at least in the third game. I didn't catch that mentioned in the video. That's another significant issue to add to it. I agree that it's best to stick with the NES versions.
Hell yeah can we get some love up in here for the Follin Brothers! That Super Off-Road soundtrack on SNES is probably THE best rock-n-roll soundtrack on the system. The opening track is just f***ing rad! I remember in the very early days of SNES emulators (anyone else remember eSNES?) that this was one of the few games that suffered sound glitches thanks to some weird wizardry those Follin boys were using. Considering I've only played Super Off-Road with more than 2 people once in my entire life when I was a kid at a birthday party, I'll take the SNES version any day. I prefer how the cars feel like they have weight like in the arcade vs the floaty, bouncy feel on NES... the way the trucks bounce reminds me of dudes flying in Tecmo Bowl.
Oh, so SNES drunk is the other person who played Little Ninja Brothers! The random battles are a bit much but aside from that a really fun game that's been lost in the sands of time
SNES drunk great video. and since you mentioned Super Ninja Boy and Little Ninja Brothers, you should consider doing a SNES drunk review of the Ninja Boy series otherwise known in japan as the Super Chinese series.
Agreed! I think we only got Super Ninja Boy, Little Ninja Brothers, and Ninja Boy for the Gameboy in America. I don't think the other games are even fan translated, sadly.
Someone might have already said this, but I have to point out that the SNES version of the Ninja Gaiden trilogy audio sounded like a Sega Genesis game and we all know that the audio on the Super Nintendo is much better than it is on the Sega Genesis so they messed up there.
Robocop 3 on SNES is amazing underrated game ... amazing guitar songs ... amazing grafics ... amazing difficult ... just a Hidden Gem. Who disagrees? It is not a game for amateurs. Just it. The second stage is a graveyard for more than 95% of SNES players. "Not everyone appreciate whiskey".
I hate to hear the phrase “suffer through a Battletoads game,” but it’s true. The whole Battletoads concept is awesome, so it would’ve been nice to see something with reasonable difficulty. I’d say Battletoads and Double Dragon on the NES is worth playing.
Paperboy 2 for SNES holds a place near to my heart. I played it and beat it twice as a kid. I actually love that strange flute filled song that plays through the game. But I completely understand why someone would hate it. I also love the Kane and Lynch series soooo, there's that.
Agree, what do you think about Double dragon,? For example Double dragon 2 nes vs Super Double dragon , I like both games but in my opinion Double dragon 2 is better .
Yup I believe in part 2 there is a cut scene showing red blood but snes trilogy it got censored to green, the music sounds worse, the life bar in part 2 and 3 dont change colors like in NES and for some strange reason all 3 games ending credits got removed!
The only one that's arguably an improvement is 3, because it adds the password back in from the Japanese original. But yeah, they butchered the music in all of them. It just feels so slapdash. And that it's so expensive now makes it feel even worse.
On the Stick - Wow! I own a complete copy. I don’t remember if I got it from a retro store, used at EBGames/GameStop or from eBay, but I have a CIB opened copy in excellent condition. I will never sell it, but it is interesting to know that the compilation is going for that much, even more so than Mega Man X or about as much. I am so upset with myself for selling CIB games like Mega Man X, Mega Man X2, Yoshi’s Island, Super Punchout, Super Double Dragon, Contra III, and many more due to being young, not having a real job, and having to sell games to purchase new games. *sigh*
Battlemaniac's biggest sin is the lack of button mapping. It also uses the A for jump and B for attack like a NES controller, when it should be B and Y respectively. And you can't change it.
Shovel Knight's Battletoads Level, has the pause music, I didn't know what it was referencing directly the pause music from the nes game (pause music on the nes wasn't exactly common, and I never played the games), thought it was some aside music easter egg.
Battletoads was my favorite game for the NES! I worked on it for a year before I could beat it and it was one of the best times in gaming I've ever had! It wasn't unfair at all it was just very precise. All the following titles in the series really disappointed me in comparison because I wanted the same degree of challenge. Same thing with StarFox.
It's a damn shame that Tecmo didn't release an all new Super Ninja Gaiden for the SNES rather than that half assed Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. I shudder to think what could have been done with a true SNES updating of the franchise.
Nice take! I'd like to suggest Monopoly for the list (no seriously), the NES version is amazing, it has tons of animations, one scene even has digitized voices, it's just super well polished. I've yet to see another rendition of monopoly on any other system (SNES, PSX, PC, etc.) that even comes close to the NES version.
I always thought that the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy's (on the SNES) graphics look no better than they might have looked on the Sega Master System. It totally made the console look very weak, and for a SNES game that came out in 1995(?), there's no excuse.
Completely agree on Battletoads. I'm one of those people who think of NES Battletoads as a masterpiece, so when Battlemaniacs came out I just loved it. Playing now though, the feel of the gameplay and level design are just far too deficient to follow the original.
It's always a learning process for the first two years of the console it's always in the last three years of the console that the big games come out after the developers understand the hardware a lot better Chrono Trigger comes out and it's amazing I doubt the game could have been made in the first year of the consoles life
