2:50 all of hot topic's net proceeds from their collection go to the trevor project edit: most of their pride merch is also available all year round (which I feel should've been included in the questions), and there's way more in store for pins than online. I'd also argue that selling merch in anti-lgbtq areas is a good thing, because it can help influence those people towards a less bigoted attitude.

Hottopic should get a bit more credit on the merch side. I got a really cute genderqueer pin from them (which I absolutely love), multiple bi, trans, and pan pin designs, and they sell all these year round rather than just at pride month Target also improved this year, at least the one I went to. They had ace pan and trans candles, and nb, trans, queer, and genderqueer socks, a historical shirt with a trans woman of color on it, and a 'gender is a social construct' shirt. The real answer is none of them are the "best" because pride was always, and still is anti-corporation. There's no shame in buying pride merch to express yourself, especially if the company is a little more ethical, but if you really want to support lgbtq+ related charities it's always better to donate directly, and for merch, you could look towards local or online independents, if you can afford the added price of buying local.
@Caterfree10

I will say that it might not be best to judge certain companies on all of these categories. For example, spencers is an adult store, so it makes sense that they would be lacking in kids merch. Hot topic is mostly a clothing store, so I wouldn’t expect to find any books there, on any topic, not just lgbt history/struggles. Other people have also pointed this out, but in store at hot topic, there’s a much better selection of pride merchandise, it’s available year round, and they donate all proceeds on pride merch to the trevor project.

Spencer’s pride collection infuriates me. Not only is it not size-inclusive, but every shirt is a crop-top, which is horrible for someone like me with body/gender dysphoria. I came here mostly looking for a rundown of places with good/interesting Pride merch in order to see what might be out there, but I feel after watching this list that this was almost entirely done by searching what was offered online (which often differs greatly from what's available in-store), and that the comparison points also feel really disingenuous when you consider that the breadth of stores here isn't just apples and oranges, but apples and kumquats. You're comparing Disney, a company that's almost entirely devoted to providing merchandise tailored to children first and foremost, to Spencers, an adult novelty shop that sells horror movie merch, weed and alcohol-themed products, and sex toys. You're comparing Target, Walmart, and Kohls, a bunch of generalist stores (two of which sell everything from clothing to groceries), to Michael's, an arts and crafts supply store that's not primarily about selling prefabricated merchandise, but about selling the materials to make whatever you want. You're looking at Hot Topic, a predominantly clothing-centric and novelties store, and expecting them to sell educational books. And you're comparing all of these to two organizations entirely devoted to being educational about the LGBTQIA+ community, giving charitably back to the community, and creating merchandise for the community. None of these things is truly like the other. If you'd limited your comparisons to "Do they offer a breadth of product, particularly outside of generic rainbow LGBTQIA+ merchandise?" and "Do they donate to LGBTQIA+ charities?", plus looking at "How long have they continuously supported the LGBTQIA+ community?", I wouldn't see this as quite so disingenuous a list, but the insistence on rankings centered around "does this store have child-appropriate merch?" or "does it provide LGBTQIA+ educational material?" when you're also deliberately ranking stores that wouldn't have a children's section, or wouldn't have a book section regardless of month just serves to sour me on this entire list. It's not logical nor fair to put criteria into a grading rubric if there's multiple of the stores being graded who wouldn't have any reason for that item/product to be available in their catalog as a matter of course.

I work at Michaels and I can say that while there's a relatively 'small' collection of pride stuff, they are extremely inclusive year round. I'm a black queer woman and my coworkers include ANOTHER queer black woman, two nonbinary folks, three transgender folks, and more. We have mix n match pronouns stickers for our tags, so if you're feeling like a she/her one day and a they/them the next day, that's fine. And those stickers were introduced in *my* store in January, not a random addition for June. You can literally put it on your name tag, and switch them out whenever. They've also been extremely accommodating when it comes to mental health issues, allowing me to change my hours on a dime during a time of trauma, with no repercussions. There are also always little bits of lgbtq+ things in the store, year round. From iron-on and sew-on patches, to beads, to pins, to socks, to crafts that you can do. I feel like this review is somewhat disingenuous as well. Besides that, because they're a craft store, there's not 'clothes and queer items' there are 'things you use to make your queer items', which honestly doesn't have any sort of coding to begin with. Buy the colors you want and make what you want from them, not 'look at this pre-made item that we've put on a display for you' bc that's not what the store is about. I couldn't have said it better than you; apples to kumquats. SURE, THERE MIGHT BE A SKEIN OF YARN THAT'S OUTLANDSIHLY BISEXUAL-COLORED...but that is yarn. It isn't an item made of yarn. Because the store doesn't sell pre-made items so trying to compare it to stores that have 'collections' of product is a massive inaccuracy. You want a lesbian blanket? The yarn aisles are right over there. You want a gay pride pin? Pick up that resin and get to work. AND AN ADDENDUM. They donate to lgbtq+ charities and have insurance for lgbtq+ employees and medical expenses.

No mention of Target having binders? (I can't shop there anyway since I'm not in the US, but a lot of people have been talking about it). How about Cloak? I find the way you're presenting Michael's a little odd... the point of a craft store is to make your own stuff, not to have premade merch. I got a really cool unfinished wooden welcome sign with a chevron design in the background that I painted in the colours of the progress flag to hang on my front door. You could make tons of tshirts and stuff from there that suited your own needs easily.

I work in a Kohl's store. Our Pride display is a bit small-ish, but it's Texas so what do you expect? The thing I was most disappointed in was that, at the very front of the rack on the Pride display were these cropped tank tops with just a little flag where a breast pocket would go. The small flag? Is it a rainbow? Is it non-binary or a flag from anyone who is actually PART of the LGBTQ+ community? Nope. It's an ally top. It's the LGBTQ+ Pride display, and they thought "you know who really belongs here? Who this month should really be celebrating? The straight people who aren't assholes and are supportive of queer people being allowed to exist as they are."
@JayBeMeee
@JayBeMeee 2 года назад
Do you think their should be ally shirts at all? I'm really on the fence about it. On the one hand, no because they aren't a part of the community and don't need to be celebrated. On the other hand does having a shirt necessarily mean they are being celebrated and could it be useful?
@Lillyluvsanime
@Lillyluvsanime 2 года назад
@@JayBeMeee yeh. It kind of gives me... non-autistic person wearing, "autism awareness," tee-shirt vibes. It could go either way: Either ti draw attention to one's self, what a good person they are and how *dramatic pause as eyes well up with tears* difficult it is to outwardly support queer people while not being queer Or To show the queer people around them that this is a safe person to talk to, someone they could trust. @Lillyluvsanime
@Lillyluvsanime 2 года назад
@@JayBeMeee if it's a basic rainbow, it's for everyone. If it's a specific "pride rainbow" like with the distinctive symbolic colors, then it gets kinda iffy. You think you've found one of your own and then they're like, "oh, sorry. I'm straight, just showing my support," and then probably it's awkward but you don't want to tell them they can't because they mean well. I do kind of feel like, if an ally is going to wear an ally shirt, they should have to seek it out. I don't think it belongs in a pride clothing collection. Pride isn't for allies, allies haven't had to fight for the right to be allies. We love and appreciate allies, but this isn't about them. Just like with allies to the BLM and No More Stolen Sisters movements. We're supposed to show up and help them, not expect to be celebrated for meeting minimum requirements of decency. Same goes for allies of the queer community.

For Target, I've personally seen a little more representation from them in terms of inclusive merchandise. There was even a skirt with the genderfluid flag's design (albeit upside down), as well as a few nonbinary and trans shirts. Dunno if that's the state I'm in or what, but I was pleasantly surprised!

I don't think it's fair to dock points on Spencer's for a lack of children's merchandise, as it's not really a 'kids' or 'everyone' store

For the Target one, I would have to disagree. I went to Target just the other day and saw a tutu/skirt with the genderfluid flag and a Non Binary pair of socks.

Gay news: Disney made there first queer couple

You're off by almost a year, but yeah. I think I know who you're talking about and I'm so happy. Way less happy that the show where said couple comes from got incredibly shortened (although the couple wasn't the reason actually)

Disney films actually have a total of 6 lgbt couples, although only one of them is disney specific as the others are from their sub studios, and that one couple (Bucky and Pronk) weren't even confirmed on screen but by their actor 9 months later. In a couple weeks Lightyear will come out, but that is also made by a sub studio.

7:43 I understand why Spencer's would *not* sell anything for children so I don't think that should really be a point against them, but i distinctly remember seeing several necklaces featuring the intersex flag when I went last pride month, and I saw it in the physical store. I haven't shopped there this year in store or online so maybe it's just not in this years collection, but that would be really weird since I know I saw it included last year.

I worked for Kohl’s in 2009 and can say that Kohl’s had insurance supporting LGBT+ adoption and surrogacy for LGBT couples. I don’t know if that matters but my store manager was gay and that’s why she stayed with the community because they were one of the first communities to have that and she could add her partner to the insurance before marriage was legal.

I’m very confused, I went to hot topic (before June) and they held way more then just that. They had multiple of each listed label, except maybe queer, and even had more than what this person listed. I’m not trying to say they’re lying by any means just genuinely confused.

The person in the video only looked at the online stores, they didn't go to any real stores. Hot Topics online store kinda sucks, but if you go to a real Hot Topic, they're full of pride merch of all kinds. I even saw a genderfluid pin, and barely anybody where I live even knows what that means.

Waaaaaaait a damn minute hold the fuck up cause WHY are you rating companies on how long they have supported us?!? That just seems wrong. What if the reason why they haven't been supporting us is because they had an executive or someone else important that was keeping them from supporting us?! What if they finally saw the error of their ways and came around to us?! Nuh uh honey this is disgusting and the kind of shit that REALLY makes me afraid to come out of the closet! As long as they show they actually support us, what difference does it make?! This is the main reason why i unsubbed from this channel a while ago. People like this person saying this kind of shit is the reason WHY people HATE us. Its not that they're homophobic anymore, i mean some of them are but, THIS is the main reason people hate us and the whole "woke" community.

A Target store near where I live has some LGBTQ clothes. It's mainly t-shirts. They have a shirt that has the trans, intersex, asexual, aromantic, and a few more, that spells out "Proud 365" I bought it last year and I really love it. The rest are either rainbows, or individual flagged shirts

My own thoughts: Spencer's: 4/5. Good, but I hate having to go inside as a minor. Had to get the talk thanks to the sex toys in the back. Target: 5/5. Really improved this year, even had omnisexual, which is rare for truly pandering companies, AND they keep fighting for us in other ways, most notably all-gender bathrooms (not just family ones) Hot-topic 3.5/5. all their stuff falls apart, even clothing. Too much bi pan, trans, and NB, not enough mlm, wlw, ace/aro, or genderfluid. All-year round is nice though. Disney: 0/5. Got sued IN JUNE for being homophobic and is known for pandering. I always kinda hated them for being cheap, obvious, and over-rated, but this is the last straw. Gay man and trans women aren't the only identities. Boxlunch: 3.5/5. Not as much as hot topic, but I did get a spongebob shirt that donated to cakeworthy, so that's nice. Wal-mart: 1/5. Hardly tried, but once in a blue moon you MIGHT see something in June in a liberal area, even though human rights shouldn't be up for political debate.

hot topic loses some points for me as a lesbian in terms of pride merch because their pride designs have not been updated in a REALLY long time, so most (if not all!) of their pride merch still has the lipstick lesbian flag, ESPECIALLY online. what if i don't want to use that flag because i am not a lipstick lesbian?

I went to Spencer's for pride gear. They took donations for the lgbtq community in which they had a flag that was colored for multiple sexuality and gendered people. I signed the trans portion of course. Also, I've bought stuff at target, micheals, and hot topic. At ea h store there was some stuff. Spencer's in Portland, or was the best for trans stuff, it may be an issue of customers seeking thing. 🤔 if more people go in and ask for lgbtq stuff it may pressure them to get on board.
