So, how did we go from a rainbow of rock, mineral, and sea salts to the sodium chloride we have in our homes? Why did we decide we only needed a pure white salt, reduced to a single sodium chloride element?

I use a salt called Herbamare, an organic sea salt that contains a mixture of freshly harvested herbs and vegetables (celery, leek, cress, onion, chives, parsley, lovage, garlic, basil, marjoram, rosemary, thyme and kelp. This improves the flavour of all savory foods and Himalayan salt.

Dr. Mercola recommends this as the best salt available. It does have a greyish tint to it. I use it too. I also alternate with pink Himalayan salt. Huge believer in healthy salt. I will even add a sprinkle to glass of drinking water sometimes with a squeeze of lemon.

So have I for at least 20 years. I went on a cruise around the UK recently, and I took my Real Salt with me in a little brown bottle, too! LOL My granddaughter laughed at me until she tasted it and then was asking for it herself. I was first attracted to it because of the delicious taste (a health food store I used to eat lunch at had it on the counter), but when I saw all the minerals it had, I knew that was a good thing for me and my family. I've even given it as gifts. 🤗

Rock salts are not way to go. I stopped using Redmond Real Salt when I started putting it in my drinking water and finding out, no matter how low amount I add there is always part that never fully dilutes in water. No thank you. Also, I'm triple caution of anything that is sourced and sold from Utah.

Although I have been using whole salts for years now, I learned more about the breakdown of how salts contribute to the biology and metabolism of the cells. This was excellent. I will have to listen again to retain everything. I'm really appreciative of my taking trace minerals from a clean salt water source daily for years now as well as weekly Epson salt soaks. My health improved - my hair quit falling out and became thicker per strand as well as filling in, my skin does not need lotions to be soft and shiny (not oily), I am not anxious.

My kids would rather not use salt at all than use white salt and they’re only teens. Ppl don’t understand that the habits in the home are foundation for kids’s health as adults . Plus myself I grew up with gray salt from the salt mine ( we had one in our town but only for tourist and therapeutic purposes)we were too poor to buy processed white salt or processed anything … now it’s the opposite , all processed is cheaper .

Just a note here, at least here in the U.S. you can buy any version of salt that you desire, while in Mexico all commercial table salt sold and used in food industries must be both iodized and fluoridated, that’s all salt sold has fluoride ! This is by government regulation passed in 1980’s close to early nineties. This seems to violate human rights to basic health, although passed as a health decree, but obligates one to consume fluoride. Beautiful Mexico has one of the highest salt and sugar consumptions in the world, and ‘right next to the U.S.’ in obesity, diabetes and coronary vascular diseases. Just a note to all humankind…. Health is Wealth ! 🇲🇽

Thank you for the valuable information shared here about mineral-rich salt; also note-worthy how it was pointed out that we should not be scared of cholesterol. However, why this fear surrounding animal foods? 🧐 What is very helpful to realise, is how the body is in reality cleansed by fats/oils - similar to a machine. When taking in much water, the body ends up stripped of minerals, since filtration through kidneys should happen slowly; in order for minerals to be taken up.... 'Drink to thirst' - as Prof. Tim Noakes advises in 'WATERLOGGED'.

I will suggest that magnesium deficiency is caused by more then a lack of minerals is salt. I use pink salt from Pacistan daily and must frequently take magnesium supplements to stop muscle cramps. There must be much more going on in our gut biodiversity that effects this balance. I also supplement with MSM, Glycine, vitamin D3, C., K2, for other issues.

Redmonds - grey (Utah), Himalayan (pakistan) pink are purest sources, as both are from ancient under earth beds & so are not subject to modern pollution. Redmonds has higher iodine content 125mg/10g iodine- good for very sweaty, high workout sweaty people, low thyroid, & ppl who dont get much salt from food. Celtic- grey salt, most of it is dried on Concrete slabs. Depending where it is harvested will tell re recent water purity. Would not advise Mediterranean (France, Brittany) derived. Ireland might be fine for water quality, if no concrete slab.

Zinc plays a key roll in taste bud function. That said, keep in mind that minerals and vitamins work together. A deficiency in one acts like a broken link in a chain, and the response can be deceiving. E.g., zinc has a variety of functions in the body. It plays a key role in making the B Complex vitamins bio-available, so a zinc deficiency can present as a B vitamin deficiency. Zinc also is a constituent in more than 2000 enzyme reactions including bone metabolism, protein and carbohydrate digestion, energy production, and phosphorus metabolism....to name a few. Due to deficient soil nutrients, you might consider taking a good quality Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Vit D3 (all in one) supplement. Those 3 minerals, along with Vit D3, work together and might help restore your taste and help with your Dupuytren. A general rule of thumb about supplements - For the most part -Vitamins can't do their jobs without Minerals, but Minerals can work without vitamins. Brands like NOW, Solaray, Solgar and Rainbow light are good brands. Look for Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc in Citrate forms for better absorption.

When they started the draft for WWI they noticed that there were a lot more men ineligible due to a thyroid condition called goiter. In between WWI and WWII they started adding Iodine to table salt and when the draft for WWII came around they noticed a marked drop in the number of cases of goiter. The answer to your question is NOT that people have been hoodwinked or programmed to use sodium chloride. We still use table salt to this day to help prevent iodine deficiency and increase thyroid function. Anyone who would steer you away from table salt with mentioning how you're gonna get your iodine is not a doctor.

Good question. Plant-based is fine, but exclusively vegan is not, IMHO, not for us and not for the planet. Animals are part of the natural web of life on earth, making our soils rich in minerals, vitamins, and healthy plants. We wouldn't be here if prehistoric humans hadn't eaten meat since there were often no human-edible plants available during such times as ice ages. Animals provided not only food but protection from the weather and tools. All life lives off other life. We may feel a little bad about that, but it's how the system was designed. I always try to eat grass-fed and pasture-raised meats, as prehistoric man ate.

@M S - so long as it's unrefined and food-grade you're good to go! But if the supplier can't provide a typical breakdown of the minerals contained I would personally avoid.

Good point. Perhaps buy ancient salt such as the pink.

When you think about it, the greed of the non-living entities known as industry do that which makes the most profit not sense .
