My favorite married couple in music history Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo who were in the 5th Dimension together in the 60s recorded this funny Laura Nyro song about the female singer (McCoo) asking a guy named Bill to marry her. Wedding Bell Blues! Life imitated art, as after they recorded it, Billy and Marilyn got married and then the song became a #1 hit. A great story that will bring a smile to your face!

Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush on Don't Give Up. Nik Kershaw and Kim Wilde Let It be ( Ferry Aid ensemble 1987). They never released a record together but have done an acoustic version of The Riddle and Kids In America for Australian television that is excellent. Always surprised they never created a monster hit by collaborating as their voices blend so well.

In the early 70's, as a 10 year old white kid growing up in the 'burbs, I adored their music. I played the Fifth Dimension LP "Greatest Hits on Earth" constantly. That was FIFTY years ago! I knew every second of every song. In High School, had it on 8 track; in College, cassette. Then CD. Thank you Marilyn, Billy, Florence, LaMonte and Ron for the soundtrack of my life. Thanks Adam. Dinner's cooking, wanna guess what I'm listening to?

My parents had a 5th Dimension 8-Track and it would play in my Dad's pickup. Just love them. And watched Marilyn on Solid Gold. I would love them to tell the story behind You Don't Have to Be a Star; my late Mom loved that song and had the 45. Laura Nyro didn't get the credit she truly deserved; her songs brought so much joy to many of us. Marilyn and Billy are still together and still singing, one of rock and pop's greatest couples.

@@ProfessorofRockMarilyn McCoo is originally from New Jersey. She won Miss Bronze California in 1962 and graduated from UCLA in 1965. She began music with The Versa-tiles and The Hi Fis, with members of both forming The Fifth Dimension. They were in that from 1967 through 1975, got their own national television series on CBS-TV in 1976. They became a duet act in 1976 through 1980 and she co-hosted and hosted "Solid Gold" during most of the 1980s on first-run syndicated television and from the 1990s to the present. They reunited with The Original Fifth Dimension in 1990 and 1991 and got their star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in August 1991. She had a gospel album out the same year. Their most recent album was released in 2021. They are still active in the industry and on social media as well.😊

When you are very young, as I was when the 5th Dimension was making their hits and living on our radios, you develop a kind of worship for the entertainers (some call it fandom) and it is very heartfelt for someone at the age of 10 to experience. Of course we all know of times where we ended up being disappointed in our heroes, bit not with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., they have always been two people worthy of the admiration and love they not only received but have created over the years. I'm so glad to see them here being happy and honored for a lifetime of love and music.

Although Dionne Warwick co-hosted the series pilot with Glen Campbell and was the first season host in 1980 through 1981, approved "Solid Gold" Musical Director Michael Miller as its musical director and gave approval for his composition of its iconic theme song and hosted season 6 during 1985 and 1986 and was great in her own right, it was Marilyn McCoo who had the longest time as co-host or host on "Solid Gold", having done that for 5 out of its 8 years on the air. She worked well with The Solid Gold Dancers as well.

I met Billy and Marilyn when I was a kid in St. Louis. My family had gone to The Chase Park Plaza for Brunch after Church and they were seated near us. Billy actually knew my dad since my dad used to work for KATZ Radio as a news director, so my older brother and I got introduced to them. I remember shaking Billy's hand and Ms. McCoo kissing my cheek and telling me I was a good boy. Then she gave both of my parents a hug and kiss on the cheek as well and they left. My dad laughed later that they had paid our bill as they left. So he doubled the tip for our server. This was in I think 1975 or 76.

To answer your question, at the moment, no one else is coming to mind… mainly because the 5th Dimension was such a major part of my music world. At one point, I stayed with father for a couple of weeks in the early 70’s, and he always had great taste in music. Which meant he had the 5th Dimension LP! So while I stayed at his place while he worked, I dug into his albums and had mini-concerts! There was something about that album that I really loved…. The arrangements, the subjects, and those voices! It was, to me, perfection! I still have visual remembrances of listening and being transported into the musical performance! If you ever hear the fifth dimension song “carpet Man,” that is my all-time favorite song of theirs, it is so cool the very end of the song with that loud sitar fighting with the electric guitar at the end such a great ending to a song

I told you before that my parents introduced me to the group 3 days after they saw 👀 them in concert. This was before her Solid Gold stint. They were all really kind and. And they all wrote me some nice notes 📝 especially Mr. Ron

Wedding Bell blues is an absolute masterpiece of sentimentality. For years I admired how it feels eXACTLY like what it is saying. But only today did I find out WHY it feels so right on. Great interview, prof!

I have the habit of judging music by the level in which it moves me in so many ways. The Fifth Dimension is one group whose music moved me, in so many positive ways. Thank you so very much.

I didn’t realize how many 5th Dimension songs I loved and sang along to already! Marilyn & Billy are so comfortable with you and so sweet together. Look at super young David Geffin! Stone Soul Picnic is just good all the way around. Wedding Bell Blues was sung at many a slumber party by us girls. We all wanted our own ‘Bill’ who would love us. I found mine and we’re 25 years and counting so far! Thanks Professor for another great video! I love it as usual. ~Mimi 💖

@Anna Trail thank you so very much! We don’t consider it work really. We just make sure to talk, laugh, and really love each other every day. Our kids have really high standards for who they’re going to marry. They’ve all said that they want what we’ve got and won’t settle for less.

@Anna Trail our wedding in 1996 was less than $2K total. In my grandparents yard, with family and friends and so much love ❤️! The day was a little tense because my mom hated my husband, so we made the decision to have a nonalcoholic reception.

When I was like nine years old I remember seeing the Fifth Dimension doing that song on Ed Sullivan while at my parent's friends house. Still enjoy it now. "Wedding Bell Blues" is the song I mean. Great group of that time.

I remember listening to the 5th dimension in the late 60s as a kid. Love their sound, just incredible. Laura Nyro was a human jukebox with all phenominal songs. Have you listened to Karla Bonoff? Another really great interview and love story.

Adam...This is such a great interview with Marilyn and Billy, you have no idea...Did you ever ask them about being the first to record Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love For You"? Anyway, since you've done them, you should definitely get an interview with Elaine "Spanky" MacFarlane from Spanky & Our Gang and talk about the band's hits "Sunday Will Never Be The Same", "Lazy Day" and "Like To Get To Know You"...Why not talk to Michelle and MacKenzie Phillips while you're at it, about the music of The Mamas & The Papas and THAT legacy???!!!

I'm so glad you released this video today, I sure needed the smile that only Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. can bring. They are so joyous and talk with such enthusiasm and love for each other, not to mention their craft. There will never be another 5th Dimension- and Billy, I want you to know that your music may have been classified as pop, but it was chock full o' soul!

My folks had the 5th Dimension's Greatest Hits album, so those songs are a part of my earliest memories. On that album, there was a track that was segued in with Wedding Bell Blues, called _The Worst That Could Happen._ It tells the story of a man watching the woman he loves marry someone else. The two songs fit perfectly together. Also, _Stone Soul Picnic_ was one I remember liking a lot back then, and still do.
