Today’s project is an emulsified oatmeal sugar scrub. Emulsified scrubs are made up of 2 parts; an emulsified base & exfoliants. This particular scrub has a moisturizing & foaming base + brown sugar, walnut shells, colloidal oatmeal, & oats for exfoliants. This scrub goes on thick & as its rubbed, it becomes creamy, spreading beneficial (colloidal oatmeal & honey) & moisturizing ingredients while gently exfoliating the skin.
BASE: 2 ounces oil/butter (I used CUPUACU butter), 2 ounces whip soap base, 4 grams emulsified wax (I used 2 grams of Cetearyl Alcohol & 2 grams of Glyceryl Stearate/Peg 100), 30 milliliters distilled water, 1.5 grams preservative (I used Optiphen - BUT After researching more, it looks like Liquid Germall Plus is probably the best choice broad-spectrum preservative! **You’ll need a sensitive scale that accurately measures grams. Add the wax to the oil/butter & microwave until melted. Before adding water, make sure it’s close to the temperature of wax/oil mixture (doesn’t have to be exact, just don’t add room temperature or cold water). Blend the emulsion to make sure everything is fully incorporated. Cool to room temperature. OPTIONAL: Add 2 ounces of whipped soap base (adds foam, lather, & suds). If you don’t want this, add 4 ounces of butter/oil (instead of 2 at the beginning). Whip base until it is light, smooth, & creamy {consistency like yogurt}. Add preservative & mix. **Makes 5 ounces of base. You could store some for later. This way you can experiment & make all types of different scrubs! FUN! OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS (can be substituted or omitted): 1 teaspoon fragrance oil, 1 tablespoon honey, 1/8 cup colloidal oatmeal, ¾ cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon oats, 1.5 teaspoon walnut shells. NOTE: You can absolutely change recipe- Just know that this will change the final product! Other ingredients that would go perfect with this scrub: kaolin clay, bentonite clay, powder milk, crushed almonds/pecans, or jojoba beads. ***IMPORTANT: The scrub will get darker & thicker over the first 24-48 hours. The oatmeal & other ingredients really thickens up the scrub. You may think the scrub is too thin, but wait a few days then check it again. ** Don't make it as thick as I did as it thickens over time. SHELFLIFE: 6 months - 1 year.
