Hello from OZ re the carousel transmission I think I have found a web site that might interest you ......How to make gears.....its very well presented with downloadable grafs etc . I thought it might be right up your street I don't have the equipment to have a go
Mark I enjoy your videos I made a whirleyjig of a duck hunter turned out great I drilled a hole and set it on a 16d nail so it would turn easy in the wind it was 8 feat I the air work great for a while then one day a strong wind lefted it off the nail when it hit the ground broke it to piece's. I can not find any videos on how to mount these do you know any videos about how to mount a whirleyjigs and the different techniques used Thanks
I have enjoyed watching most of your videos. I am trying to make a few Whirligigs for my friends but I am having a time hooking the wire to the cam and the movable figure. It just keeps binding as the propeller turns around. Can you make any suggestions . Thank you Carl
Hi Carl, it can be tricky to get it right, it's a case of trial and error really. you must make sure everything is loose and free-running, also make sure the link wire is the correct length for the project having it too long will tend to jam things up and lock the cam shaft.
A tricky one Rick. for most woodwork I use PVA, however even the waterproof PVA is not much use outside. I have sometimes used superglue but I don't trust any really outside in the weather so I mostly avoid using glue. However I have at times used those 'no more nails' type glue/sealants to fit the tail sail or to seal any gaps around the propeller blades, as long as you use the exterior version it's quite good and fill gaps to stop water getting in too much.
Great videos! I’m working on my first whirligig… running horse. It’s having issues pointing into the wind. When I add a rudder, it lines up better but runs away from the wind. Any suggestions?
Thank you for the comment Janet. I have to admit that I am not a whirligig expert, I just make them and hope they work. Perhaps try moving the pivot point with respect to the rudder, that's about the only thing I can think of. :)

Smee again...hello ! Do you use ..external p.v.a glue ? I thought that would stop the vane rotting at the base . I have been using 3mm ply for the vanes what is your thoughts on it ( good or bad ) I only used it because I had it ( a leaf from your book ) HA HA
Hi Beryl, where i use glue outside I use one of those instant grab adhesives commonly known as 'no more nails' as they act as a sealant too, make sure you use one suitable for out of doors.

Thanks for the comment. I have had an idea of doing something that revolves horizontally for a long time but I always get just to think about it. I think you would need to use some form of gearing or belt drive to convert from vertical to horizontal drive. I also considered trying a fan on top horizontally but have not got around to trying to do so ,yet! If you have a go let me know how you get on.
@@scrimperuk Thanks for your quick reply I seem to remember that someone used one of those round roof ventilator extractors and that is as far as I got and to buy one in OZ is about 90 dollars so that's out because half of it would be of no use to me and I think they would be like hens teeth in a scrap yard . Ah well ....back to scratching my head Cheers
