The FAA tells NBC News it is investigating new whistleblower claims made by a Boeing quality engineer about the 787 Dreamliner jet. The whistleblower says sections of the fuselage are put together improperly and that after thousands of flights, it could break apart midair. Boeing says it's fully confident in the plane. NBC’s Blayne Alexander reports for TODAY.

@@soccerguy2433 Only after his first cross interrogation by Boeing lawyers they understood that John Barnett could even remember details reliably. The second interrogation by John Barnett's own lawyers would have been far worse for Boeing. One of Boeing's lawyers was reportedly very upset about how it could be that he remembers even details after many years without access to any internal documentation. John Barnett answered that he had memorized them as inspection was his main duty anyways. Probably John Barnett had photographic memory? As such, no. It was perfectly the time when Boeing had to realize how big a threat John Barnett really was. The whole incident has "professional murder" all written over it. But I doubt that we will ever see any evidence. It's the country of magic bullets after all.

My dad worked on the development of the 787 and he told me NEVER EVER fly on that plane. He was an auditor for Boeing for years and he oversaw quality controls throughout various production channels. We joke in our family that Boeing quality went downhill after he retired. It's really a shame, because Boeing was an amazing company years ago. But really, it's not Boeing anymore. It was essentially acquired in a hostile takeover by McDonnell Douglas and it's been downhill ever since.

Additionally 1. Boeing lawyers had finished their questioning and could only delay him by demanding his testimony was complete before further testimony was taken. 2. He would have only faced questions from his own lawyer. (His own lawyer remarked he was a dynamite witness, he remembered documents from 10 years ago and appeared delighted to be able to tell his side of the story at last. When questioned by the Boeing lawyers how he remembered, he replied "I lived them".) (He was applying for compensation for lack of career advancement, and bullying. His lawyer said the claim will still go ahead.) 3. He had rung his mother saying he would be home the weekend 4. He had packed his bags 5. He was found in the trunk of his Orange Dodge Ram. 6. No mention was made of whether he had paid the motel. (An odd omission) 7. Convenient : no search warrant for the motel was needed : the police had simply to collect his Dodge Ram, and packed bags, allowing the motel to give his room to the next customer.

I don’t know if you’ve ever worked in aerospace, but it’s common to have people who don’t think something is being done correctly. Often people who just don’t know what they’re talking about. There’s really no way to have an opinion about this claim from this report.

That is a very specific warning about 787 structural integrity. The FAA should get a team together to investigate the fuselage fitting problem, and if that could result in a future disaster from fatigue.

The B787 hasn’t had any incidents, yet ‘whisteblowers’ seem to be coming from everywhere all of a sudden trying to demonize Boeing. Another example is the loss of a wheel of a United 777, which is not Boeing’s fault, but rather poor maintenance from United.

@@DABK2024he should have known better than to try to put those bigger engines on airframes that are too low. Hence the placement and need for MCAS, just to get half of an order to Airbus. Half of that order wasn’t worth all of this. They needed a new, higher, airframe!

13 years so far, over 1110 787's flying around the world.. 0 structural failures. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it hasn't happened yet, and to my knowledge so far there have been no reported issues of any 787's fuselages (or any other component) being compromised during a level d check.

I remember drilling the composite material at Boeing in the 787 factory in Charleston, SC. MUCH stronger than steel and impossible to break in half. You would burn up drill bits before drilling through this material. Danage by bumping into it is a different story.

No 737 crashing because of rudder problems until 1991. Does that mean that the old rudder system on the 737 was perfectly safe and all people that were warning about it for several years were wrong ? No 737max crashes until Lion Air 610. Does that mean the 737max and the MCAS system were perfectly safe despite Boeing E-Mails proving that employes were warning about the system before the crash ???? The 787 will probably crash sooner or later. And it will crash because of hidden design flaws and manufacturing faults that were swept under the rug. Exactly like the whistleblowers said they will. Exactly the same way the cargo doors problems on the DC-10 which caused it to crash. It's just a matter of time when Bean counters take the helm at an engineering firm. Boeing is done, for. It's over. The bean counters ran another company into the ground. Like they always do.

Fatigue and stress is best measured over real world conditions even though design is typically performed under accelerated lab conditions. Annual inspection and test of all fatigue prone surfaces should reveal any non conformities. QA 101

This probably applies only to the South Carolina factory. As most Boeing engineers say they won't fly on 787. Also many airlines will not accept 787 planes from this plant

If Boeing is unable to control one of its facilities it is a company issue. Is the South Carolina plant exempt from company procedures and policies? If not they could have done something about it, easy conclusion to arrive at. I thought the 737 was made in Washington and the fuselage in Kansas, now we have two models and more locations in the mix.

If you are hired onto the 787 assembly program in Charleston, SC, you are sent to a school where they required you to do very demanding and precise assembly projects before you ever set foot inside of the factory. In these schools, I noticed that the required tolerances were extremely strict. But when I worked in the factory, I noticed that wing mounting countersunk lug bolts that should be nearly flush with the composite surface were well below the tolerances required in the school. These lug bolt holes were drilled by a robotic machine. It looked like they were drilled past 1/3 the thickness of the part.

i heard from source that a lot of the dreamliners that were built in Charleston SC require a lot of them have shimming issues where gaps weren't closed up and now boeing is quietly repairing them but to do that, there is enormous amount of time required.

@@OfficialSheffieldCouncilit is when they have been in hot water for years now, getting worse with the MAX planes needing MCAS because to get half of an order going to Airbus, they needed to get bigger engines on an airframe that’s too low. They needed a new, higher airframe but wanted to cut corners.

Considering the Fuselage is of Composite material and they did have problems with drilling structural alignment holes - including the amount of holes they could drill while the drills were still sharp and cut properly. It's what you get with self regulation of the airline manufacturing industry by the FAA.

I doubt this is valid. With the stresses of repeated pressurizations we'd have seen this failure mode already. The 787 undergoes 600 cycles per year on average and one 787 delivered in 2012 has over 16,500 cycles. If he's saying this is a brand new issue, and he was the quality manager, he should face charges.

So a typical 30+ year old 787? That sounds like extremely high quality. The original testing suggests we'll see 40 year old 787s still in service. There's no such data that shows longevity of that sort for Airbus A330 or A350. And the A380 is ready for the boneyard on it's 2nd D check.

I actually did that. Had a flight via Delta airlines that was switched from Airbus to Boeing 3 days before my flight, I called them and they apologized and switched me to another Airbus. I only fly in extreme circumstances, so I wont' put much of a dent in Boeing wallet. I simply don't trust pilots.

I don’t know the specific technical details of the whistleblower’s accusations. However, concerning Boeing’s rebuttal: Stress testing is not fatigue testing. A flawed carbon fiber construction could be difficult to predict or detect impending fatigue failure. The mechanisms of fatigue failure for steel and aluminum are well understood and statistically predictable. Carbon fiber not so much.

I flew on a dreamliner last summer with a bunch of kids from the children's choir where i teach, on route from San Francisco USA to Athens Greece (with one stop). we were heading to a major choir festival and competition. these kids are bright, talented and dear to all of us and i'm glad we were lucky enough to make it in one piece.

The 787 has a near perfect safety record. I’ve flown on the 787 five times. Two on El Al (Israel’s national airline), LOT Polish (Poland’s airline), and Qantas (Australia’s national airline). I love that aircraft because of how quiet it is. I flew on Qantas a combined 28 hours and 57 minutes getting from LAX to MEL and vice versa.

Quiet? Noisiest widebody I have been on - and I've flown them all. Last 787 flight was BA Premium Economy (so well forward), yet I was shocked at how noisy it was. On walking through the terminal at my destination, I found I was walking alongside the captain and first officer. I asked the captain why the 787 was so noisy? Not from where I was sitting was his reply! Right....

Etihad, nov. 2023, jan. 2024. On the 2nd flight the entertainment system had a few issues on a majority of seat, ie it was off a good part of the flight, but apart that and some windows that would not dim correctly, I didn't notice anything. Also we were rerouted over Iran, but that was the other leg, on 777's...

Other airlines followed suit. MD Boys were worried their yacht might not get built in time for spring. They sprung into action. They closed the Seattle 787 plant.

I’m skeptical, only because the 787’s record is impeccable when it comes to safety. If airlines aren’t maintaining them properly, that’s a different story. I flew one from Los Angeles to Tokyo couple years back and we hit, what the pilot called, major turbulence. People on the plane were praying and we were bucking like a bronco on speed for a good half hour. The plane took it in stride and the last 3 hours were as smooth as glass. Launch an investigation and have unbiased structural engineers look it over and give their assessment.

His assessment is failure is not intermediate. The materials integrity and installation shortcuts would shorten the life of the aircraft. Composite materials are known to delaminate subjected to environmental degradation, UV exposure, temperature cycling, vibrations, etc. So, keep an open mind, you might learn something.

Let's keep it real. The 787 has had it's problems in the early productions. I have few on the 787 at least 4 times a year for 10yrs.Great aircraft to travel on. It was also the plane that sent AIRBUS back to the drawing board to update the A350 Remember it was supposed to be a update of the A330. The dreamliner bought in new technologies and materials that at the no other aircraft company had. I am sure the airlines have an inspection process in place to check for defects in the aircraft structure,after so many hours of flights.

I was on a flight in a 787 in early Jan 2020 & I remembered watching the overhead luggage compartment swaying side to side so violently I thought the top of the plane will just fly off. We landed about 30 minutes later after an 8 hour flight but now I still worry about 787's.
