Just got a WS1065 base. Thanks to your videos I should be able to program it, even if I'm old. I'm sure I'll refer back to this video for help Illinois has mandated departments be consolidated to a central dispatch system, one city (Mchenry) NORCOM will dispatch for the local towns in the county's north quadrant. Fortunetly I know the car numbers attached to specific departments so I may not have to do detailed programming. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much! I finally got this scanner working. You were a helluva lot more help than this POS user manual. I followed the user manual instructions carefully and couldn't get it programed. Followed your instructions and it is now scanning an APCO 25 trunked system satisfactorily. Thanks again.
Just a heads-up: if you're using the PC software and have manually entered all of the frequencies for a trunked or LTR system you will have to do this procedure to activate them and assign them to a scan list or channel bank. Then go back to the software and save the file after you verify your work. The second issue applies if you're close to any FM broadcast towers. If you're noticing the S meter reading full scale but nothing's coming through you may need a RTL-SDR notch filter. I use an outdoor antenna and had this issue on VHF high band signals. The filter fixed my problem.
@@musicwatcher100 , you have to decipher Whistler's nomenclature. Once you do that, with the computer software programming is easy. My problem is that I don't use Radio Reference to program. About a year ago I set up a SDR in search and store mode. It snagged channels from the county I live in, mostly UHF, and channels from seven surrounding counties, mostly VHF high band. I entered all of them into my Bearcat 780 scanner. Then I began noticing that the high band signals had stopped coming in. Research and experimentation revealed that FM broadcast interference was the culprit. Unfortunately, I didn't figure that out until after buying the 1065. A filter, sold by RTL-SDR cured my problem.
I just bought the WS1040 scanner. My police/fire frequencies are p25 trunked in the 800MHz, 5 frequencies I have saved. I plan a trip where I can listen to the ships and lift bridge on the marine frequency in the 156MHz, non p25 trunked. Can I program the different frequencies together?
Just a tiny correction, view of the entire screen instead it was jumping up and down. I was able to after repeating a couple of times to program a set of trunked frequencies. Thank you fór I am still new to my WS1040. 73 de N2OBS
Doug - How are you? I was just thinking about some of the hams that have got away. Had the local hamfest last weekend. Been thinking about upgrading the scanner, poped into this one and said I recognize that voice. Anyway, this was posted quite a few years ago but you might get a notice of this. Anyway, take care. Good instruction too!
hello K4DPS. Just entered the digital age of scanning and am having trouble with the local P25 system in the Oakland, CA area. The radio is a BCD436 and while I've had success using Sentinel to load all manner of other systems, when I load this system it's not entering the frequency info...so it doesn't work. I've resorted to manually creating the system, but am not sure I've got it right. The system name is EBRCS in Alameda county, CA. Is there something wrong with the Radio Reference database or am I just doing something wrong. (other P25 systems are working) If I must program manually, what are the steps to do this? Appreciate any help you can provide.
Ok, here's my final update: After a week, the 1065 went back in the box and my old BC780XLT is back in service. In Allegheny County and most of the surrounding counties, most of what goes on is on good old FM analog. The 1040/1065 won't decode whatever digital modes are out there and I heard nothing on any trunked systems listed by Radioreference. I was able to hear the LTR system at Irvin Works but that's all. After installing the FM broadcast filter VHF high band reception improved on both scanners, but the 1065 is now being overloaded by the 162.55 weather transmitter while the 780 is not. That overloading interference affects frequencies close to 162.55. So...I'll probably try to sell it later on, but for now it's a backup. I can't say that I'm pleased, but because it helped unravel a mystery, I can't say that I'm disappointed either.
How do you lock out a specific talk group?...or unlock a specific talk group once you lock it out....and how do you hold on a talk group ID...like you only want to listen to a certain talk group ID
In 2017 I purchased a Whistler TRX-1 scanner for the specific purpose of monitoring the Maricopa County Sheriffs department, which is a P25 system. I paid extra to have the scanner pre-programmed by Zip Scanners. I've contacted Zip Scanners and Whistler by email multiple times and have followed their detailed instructions on how to program my TRX-1 using the EZScan software. It's now 2022 and I have yet to be able to listen to the MCSO. I've owned scanners (mostly Bearcat or Uniden) since the 80s and have always manually programmed them without any difficulty or problems. Do you or anyone you may know have any suggestions on how I can properly program my SRX-1 so I can listen to the sheriffs department? Thank you.
hello k4dps i was wondering if u could help me. I recently got a whistler 1065 i subscribed to the radioreference site for programming once i got the scanner and i have not been able to hear anything on my scanner i currently live in raymond nh there are 4 frequencies for my town from 151.2750 to158.85750 im not sure if im doing something wrong all but one of the frequencies are fmn and the one is p25 any help would be greatly appreciated thank you
What happened to the days when you could buy a scanner turn it on and it would just start scanning, and you didn't need a masters degree in programming to get it running.
@@k4dps Thanks for the reply. We just purchased the Uniden 436HP, and when we entered our Zip Code, we ended up getting all of NJ (Our State) as well as NY, PA, Etc, and all I wanted was the county that we live in, so we ended up returning it. Thanks again for the getting back to me.
Here's an update: I was finally able to get the trunked channels working by using the Win500 software. Using ARC500 and the PSREdit500 software somehow I missed how to assign the various trunked/LTR systems to their respective scan lists. I say that because each system needs its own exclusive list. Now we'll run it for a week and see how it goes.
Doug: When programming a "trunked" system, can I only input one primary frequency? I'm a little confused here when this episode shows you inputting the primary and alternate frequencies.
I watched your video on programming a trunk system/talkgroup into a Whistler 1040 scanner. I too have a Whistler 1040 and followed your video step by step and programmed a trunk system into my scanner. When I was finished, I saved everything and then pressed the scan button. Works great, however, my question is when watching your video, once you press scan, your scanner shows the “T” on top while it is scanning. Mine shows a “T” and a “G”. I do not understand entirely the “G”. What effect if any does that have when scanning?
Once you program a trunked system into one of the banks of the scanner......is there a way to add another frequency to it later? Just like you can go into a system and add additional talk groups to it. with the EDIT function. Basically, what I'm asking is....is there an EDIT for additional frequencies for the system to be added? Thanks for any and all help.
@K4dps at the beginning of the vid was that your talkgroups flashing by in the row bottom of the display or was it your systems? I have seen this before & would like know what it is & how to display it.
@@k4dps I have several GRE derived base scanners of various model numbers & branding & it would be great if you could tell me how to display the talkgroups while scanning, like that. Thanks. When my GRE derived scanners, scan they just show the name of the scan list & then flash the word "channel" whenever they switch CC channels, in the system.
I have downloaded the programs to import the p25 trunking system from Radio reference to my Whistler 1040, now I have no idea what to do next. The screen on the radio says: press new to create objects...
Trying to program MARCS system for Ohio State patrol. The counties are defiance and van wert. Would you possibly know if these should be programmed in p 25 manual or automatic. If they are multi channel or not? I'm not picking them up for some reason. I am picking up another county that is digital. Confused?... Thanks for your help.
All these vids are made like people know all about this stuff. I need programming my Whistler WS1040. I don’t know what a trunked system even is. Do I enter all as talk groups? 🤯
Hi sir. I have a question. I just bought this scanner and I tired programming a trunk system. However when I got to put the frequency in, it won't take it. For example the frequency is 424.1625. When I punch it in and hit done, it saves the frequency as 424.1600. It does it no matter what frequency I punch it while trying to create a system. I was wondering if you had any idea what it is doing that?
I’m in the Escambia/Santa Rosa area and looking at purchasing this scanner. Radio Reference says we’re on mostly P25 for law enforcement channels. Most channels have an “E” behind P25 indicating encrypted. Will I still be able to hear? Thank you
No, all law enforcement channels are encrypted and cannot be monitored. The Florida Highway Patrol is also encrypted. You will only be able to hear EMS and Fire.
What’s the use in a scanner if you can’t listen? I guess if it’s for listening to air traffic or EMS/Fire. No real use in paying more for a digital model. May as well go with a conventional AT type I suppose.
Hi great video. I just got into analog buf a lot of frequencies out here I want to listen to are digital or trunked. This video was pretty straight forward and very helpful.. just one question what is the bank? What does turning bank 3 do here? Thank youuu
@@k4dps ha. I've only had radios with 2 banks. I wonder if that would have went over my head if I had more/ you used bank 1 or 2 as an example lol thanks man
I did everything exactly as you showed on my Whistler WS1040. Hit scan and it comes up "nothing enabled". Help. What did I do wrong? I can't seem to get the trunk system to work.
I just ordered a WS1040 on your recommendation and new to scanning. Our police dept. is trunked on P25 in the 800Mhz range. Will this scanner work on this system?
@@k4dps Thanks for responding. 2 issues maybe you can help with. First when I try to upload from the PSREdit500 software I get, waiting for scanner and it times out or something about USB drivers, where do I get USB drivers? Also when I tried to add conv. freq. manually, I put in 107.2000, local fire and hit enter/select or done, it shows 108.000.
@@stevelaminack1516 sorry but I have never used PSRedit500 software so I can’t help. 107.2 is a FM radio frequency, not any public safety frequency that I know of.
Factory resest. When the scanner is off, turn it on and press 0 and then 1 and then enter. then press any number key twice, make sure you do this right after you turn your scanner on.
I don't believe this scanner does that. The Uniden Homepatrol line of scanners has that feature and pulls from it's internal database. Very convenient for people traveling or not wanting to program a scanner.
Truth be told, after everything I have yet to hear a peep on any of the 4 trunked systems and the 2 LTR systems I programmed in. For what I believed the 1065 was capable of, digitally it's been a disappointing radio. It will not decode any common amateur radio digital signals like D-STAR or Fusion. It will not decode DMR signals. And in this day and age, buyers expect to be able to update the device's firmware on a periodic basis. Apparently Whistler is following the Android update paradigm: buy a new phone if you want an Android upgrade. Since this scanner was sold by Radio Shack and they've been kaput for many years then it's fair to assume that, digitally speaking, the radio is functionally obsolete. But...its performance with conventional AM/FM two way systems is much better than either of my two older Bearcat scanners. It easily identified any type of subaudible or digital tone scheme it's encountered. The squelch tail eliminator makes listening easy on the ears. If it died today would I buy another? No, I'd go back to my 780XLT. What I thought wrong with it was cured by a FM broadcast interference filter.
@@commandcenter9770 , you must have a good one, because the reviews on radio reference state that P25 phase 1 is the only digital mode the 1065 will decode.
Anybody having issues programming P25 channels like LAPD try programming as CONV instead of TGRP. Couldn’t get any LAPD to come thru and figured out it should be programmed as CONV not TGRP.
The hard reset: turn the radio on, wait for the Welcome screen to appear, then immediately press 0, then 1, and follow the instructions on the LCD display to reset the radio.
@@imafireman1 To initialize to factory defaults: 1. Turn off the scanner, then turn it on again. 2. When the Welcome/Ownerscreen appears, press 0. 3. Press 1. 4. Press ENT. 5. Press any key to proceed. The scanner reboots with file system and global parameters reset to factory defaults.
