Interesting. I bought mine 2 years after you made this video for xmas 2017 and it came with a black and blue box instead of the red. I always wanted one since seeing the radioshack version in early 2013. It's even better than I imagined it would be, insanely sensitive even with just the included whip, putting on dedicated UHF or VHF antenna it's pretty unreal what it picks up.
nice scanner, i used to live down the street from baybrook mall in friendswood texas and it would always be fun to listen to the mall security especially when they were trying to locate or stop a shoplifter, you got a good idea of sitting out front of the shopping center to listen to some of the employees talking on the hand held radios, try Target, they always have security walking around with the handhelds
Your K4DPS videos in under 2 minutes convinced me to buy my first Whistler which is a WS1040 (it arrives Monday!). For my handheld use, I decided to switch away from my Uniden BC125AT (I have 3 of them for various locations) because the battery compartment has failed on all three (they no longer can be used with batteries in any way). Yes I take them everywhere so they get beat up a bit, but they should not fail so quickly. (I also have a desktop Uniden which I still use/like). Anyway, I am super excited! My storm chasing kit will be very happy I think with a Whistler. Maybe I'll get the analog also. : ). THANK YOU!!!
I have always watched your videos, and love your how-to’s. It’s going on 4 years now since your last posted, not sure what happened to you, but i hope your well, or RIP, either way.
Thanks for the informative video I just received my whistler 1065 but can't receive my local PD but I can on my laptop through WiFi doesn't make sense !same frequency
Greetings, thanks for your videos. Don’t know if you respond. Looking for a scanner hand held in the $300.00 price range. I don’t need digital in my area at present time. What might you suggest?
Looks like my radio shack scanner, I bought when they were going under. It was their best handheld they sold, but have it in storage, because of a move. I don't remember the model, but the buttons look the same. I think it had 1000 channels, but I have to look it up now.
This is exact same thing. GRE who later went under and was bought by Whistler made those scanners rebranded for RadioShack. When it was made by GRE it was more silver/light black and called the Pro-106, then after Whistler started making them it became the Pro-651 and was more dark grey. With it's insane sensitivity, easy access thru plentiful buttons, and ability to program nearly everything straight through the radio without a computer it's still one of the best scanners ever made. Good to see whistler kept them going, you should definitely dig it back out, I just opened mine again after moving and it's lots of fun while going to the store or going for a walk.
im trying to figure out what the high and low threshold changes not too familiar with it pretty new to P-25 system. im using RSPRO-106 its my fav handheld i take it everywhere
Kandi Klover - I use a Opto Digital Scout. I can actually walk the Mall or Location and Instantly Capture targets and their CTCSS as well. great for Trunking.
Sir, Could you please make a video on the audio? Like could you scan a P25 system and record the Traffic. Im really wanting to get this scanner but i would like to know how loud it goes and how good it sounds and picks up. Ive looked everywhere and cant find a video on how to do it. So if you could make one it you would be a life saver! It only has to be about 2-3 minutes. Not long at all.
Hey, I really like your videos. Very informative and interesting. I have a question though, what scanner would you recommend best for P25 Phase 2 receiving? (Specifically to monitor the Alabama First Responder Network in the Huntsville, AL area)?
@@markplott4820 R-30 not very good. DV-10 very good. Just buy it from overseas instead of USA dealers so you can get it with analog and digital descrambler enabled and no frequency lockouts.
@@kishascape - NOPE, still ILLEGAL to Import any Radio capable of Receiving 800/900 mhz CELLULAR. I find my R30 outperforms the UNIDEN, DV-10 and W-TRX series. besides I bought my AOR 1000 xlt PRE ban and works Great on Cellular.
Thanks for all the videos I have the ws 1040 and having a issue when in scan mode keeps locking out and the display shows squelch and search how can I remedy this Thanks again for the videos
DOUG: Does the WS1040 have a feature where it will save "Hit" frequencies? i.e., I have the unit on "sweeper" mode and it would somehow save each live frequency. That would be great! Please advise.
i would like to to program the whistler ws1040 to the fort walton beach florida police department to their digital frequencies, can you please upload a video of how to 460.075
K4DPS, I have a question I have a ws1040 scanner Whistler. my question to you is how can I listen to certain departments such as I want to only listen to fire?? How can I do that? Thank you. I love this Scanner!!!!
you have to create a scanlist with ONLY the Fire Frequencyes you are interested in. Whistler Provides a link software for its Newest scanners and it has a Nationwide Database.
K4DPS - as a HAM don't you have a Frequency Counter ? I have a Optoelectronics Digital Scout. I can wear the Scout like a Pager. walk in the Actual Mall or Location and Instantly Capture and Automatically Log anyone with a Analog or Digital Radio. I Also have a ICOM R-20 and I have a Reaction Tune cable connected to it. It Automatically updates my ICOM with any Frequencies I discover.
furthermore a Frequency Counter like the Scout does NOT need to be tuned. It Instantly captures anyone using a Analog / Digital / Trunking radio and Automatically captures the PL, Ctcss, tone codes as well. 10mhz - 2.6ghz INSTANTLY.
DOUG: With all the frequency ranges open (1 thru 9), my WS1040 can sit for an hour without picking-up anything! Does the scanner in "signal stalker mode" sweep through EVERY frequency the unit is capable of receiving (AM, FM and digital)? I'm kind of perplexed here in the WS1040's silence. Thank you.🤔
Yes it does but it receives nearby frequencies only. Press the WX button and make sure you can receive the weather. If you can, then your scanner is working correctly.
I have a scanner app on my phone and I use to hear all of Hillsborough county Florida and the city of Tampa. But for some reason you can't get that now. I'd like to buy a scanner but only if I can catch my area. Thank you
goto radioreference com and do a Search for City/County for Hillsbrough FIRE. the scanner apps on phones are crap, they don't provide the full transmission and they time out. also scanner apps are NOT Selective at all.
Special Stalker/Sweeper If a 1 MHz sweep indicates that activity is present, when set to 'On' (F2-SPCL), Special Stalker/Sweeper searches the whole 1 MHz range to find the source. If you lockout 5 frequencies within a 1 MHz segment, the scanner will skip that entire segment in subsequent searches. See SpclStalk(Sweep)Lmt (in the 'Expert Settings' menu) to change the (default 5) number of frequencies within a 1 MHz segment.
Jamie - PC is generally better as there are many UNPUBLISHED frequency and FCC no longer updates is License Listing......Its why Police Call (publication) lo longer exists. but Whistler has software compatable with Radioreference Database. you can update or FREE.
Don't get it. I recommend a Whistler 1088 or wait for the NEW Digital Communications Receivers from AOR (DV-10) and the ICOM (R-30) . Both the ICOM and AOR have Built in GPS and Bluetooth. and the AOR can Automatically Detect Digital Mode Automatacally.
Good luck to you man, just met you now and you seem to have some kind viewers checking on you. What’s the SPCL button do? I got a pro 197 for a good price and been learning it by use. No books
It's been over 20 years since I had a uniden scanner. I want to get back in the hobby and things have changed of course. My question is, do these new scanners catch every police department?
+67foxcharlie no sir. some pd are encrypted, meaning u cannot hear them. if you are lucky, they are not encrypted in your area. get on radioreference and submit the ? about your area to the forum and see if someone there locally knows.
+67foxcharlie many persons uploading scanner feeds are discontinuing PD feeds as criminals are using apps and pd feeds to aid their crimes. most of us dont want PD moving to encrypted, so part of its an effort to keep that from happening.,
