What a fabulous social document ! Thank you ! All my children where born at Whiston maternity unit , so sad to see it demolished.

What a fabulous collection of pictures. My mother trained as. Nurse at Whiston at the end of the war. She was there as the NHS was launched..... then Nurse Butcher, she continued there as Nurse Griffiths, still known to everyone as Butch in the then A&E until I was born in 1949. She returned there after her children were born as Night Superintendant , then as Sister on G16 in the early pioneering days of Intensive Care. Later she was Nursing Officer in charge of Burns & Plastics on G12& 13 until she retired around 1984.It was a second home as I was growing up. How she would have loved to have seen these pictures.

Thank you for your comment. As far as I'm concerned, your mother was in the NHS when staff were treated with respect. In fact I must have known your mother as I covered G10 - 12 as a pharmacy porter 1978 - 82, and I met my EX around '79 on G12.. Take Care.

New every inch of the old hospital it was my playground and I'd go to the old people ward and speak to a patient called Ruth Banister lovely lady she was

Precious footage, thank you. So many happy memories of the old hospital - historic church (criminal they demolished it!), flyover, switchboard & security, M & H block (did placements there), sewing room, wrvs, dr's mess parties, social club, vending machine on "corridor opposite pharmacy". Even recognised one of the gals in the c1988 pic (she was my mentor on B&P lol), & several of the canteen staff. Ahhh such happy days.

Great pics Paul. I Joined in 2001 at Whiston and had some great laughs/memories. Started as part of the Security Team, and now (19 years later) I'm one of the Mat Porters. Wait til I see Peter Owens to tell him he's famous !!!! LOL

My birthplace, and I spent 2 months on ward C3 back in the 90s with a serious lung infection. Good hospital

When I was at this hospital visiting my Nan in 2005 we were in the WHSmith’s and the fire alarm went off the shop doors closed and we had to use the shop fire exit which took us into a courtyard which wasn’t an exit at all we got taken back into the shop and my mum had to try and prise the main doors open with a fire extinguisher a fireman then came over and help us and when we got into the main corridor outside WHSmith’s nurses will wheeling patients outside in beds and all fire doors had closed and when we got the department when my Nan was they had no idea of the fire alarm activation because they were in a different alarm zone. It was a horrible experience as we all fought it was a real fire and we where basically trapped in the shop and we had to wait till the alarm had been made clear if it was real or not before we could go anywhere in the building

I was born and bred in Prescot my mum and dad worked at Whiston hospital mum a cleaner dad a male nurse my sister trained as a nurse there worked there her 2 children were born there so did my son and my brother 4 children were born there I passed there every day for 5 years going and coming home from Whiston cent .my grandma always refused the hospital the work house fran

I agree. when I first had the idea I was set on using Lancashire as this is where it all began from Prescot Union Workhouse to The County Hospital, to Whiston Hospital, all from Lancashire, But Lancashire became Merseyside in April 1974, the same year I started work. So I have changed the title, plus the video may get more hits as it is more likely to be known as from Merseyside than Lancashire.
