The majority of the under decks of Whitby's famous piers are closed to the general public. There was a time when both piers would be filled with anglers, but sadly that is no longer the case.
What a shame that the people who are supposed to be in charge of these wonderful structures have their eyes on other things😮. A sign of the times we are living in unfortunately!
Hi Glenn, how very sad to see the lower pier etc. in such need of much repair & other works to be carried out! When I was young I often liked to go down onto the lower pier, "happy memories". Thank you for sharing.
I've got great memories of being with my brother down here with me looking out to sea whilst he fished. 1 year we were there, there were SO many jellyfish. I'm going back to the mid 80s.
These under decks were usually filled with people fishing when I was a kid. I used to go down there with my Dad, but always found it quite scary - you are that much closer to the heaving sea, and the wind can be a lot stronger down there. I remember being scared that the wind was going to blow me over the edge. Yikes! Memories...
I remember this, seeing them all sat down there. Never been down, the sea has to be dead calm for me to even walk on the wooden part. The underneath bit terrifies me. But it's a shame it's ended up like this
I emailed Whitby Town Council last month to remind them that the seating around the West Pier lighthouse is still missing despite a Harbour Committee meeting 18 months ago saying it could now go back as the netting work around the lighthouse had been finihed.
Sadly in need of some repair and restoration in think before it gets any worse, especially with all these storms we keep having, new timber, new concrete, new railings. lick of paint in places in need of some TLC, then it would look great and safe! 😊
Definitely needs repairing can't be left in that condition how mean people come to whitby and to walk down there part of holidays or just day trips plus great photos
Well it's been that way for about ten years so far Paul. Remember it took them over 20 to put a Bridge on the east pier. I don't expect to see it done before Im dead :(
It's been in a mess for years like the rest of Whitby going down the pan. You don't see the harbour master Money for ord Roap. Mr bean would make a better job.
