In today's BJJ Gi roll, we have Jess, a brown belt, versus Josh, a WHITE BELT. Josh gets a little ahead then pays for it.

She was letting him work the first round. Most good upper-belts will do this with white belts. But after that, Jess shows Josh what's really up.

I will never forget the first time I legit tapped an upper belt (I'm still a white. It was 100 % a fluke and he wasn't paying attention) he was proud of me but then I paid dearly. He always went a bit harder on me after that and I am thankful for the pressure. No new taps though 😆😆😆

Currently a white belt with 1 strip and have been training for just over a year now, I have also competed in 2 Gi+No-GI competitions and won bronze and silver twice each. My goals for the next year here is: 1: Learn how to escape side control 2: Compete in at least 6 competitions (1 every 2 months) 3: Feel more confident on the bottom 4: Learn the D'arce choke 5: Earn another strip :D Thank you for the video Tyler!! Agreed. I'm also a brown belt. Sometimes it's smart to tap to weird positions. She did a great job at keeping a high pase wile not just tapping him repeatedly. Ya if I feel a white belt is attempting something the right way... I'll see if they can complete the sub. It's training

Started jiu jitsu about two months ago. I got 2 stripes on my white belt so far. I think mainly because I have wrestled all my life and it’s helped me with my bjj. I definitely have a lot I can improve on, I hate going to my back but want to get good in the guard because there are so many great attacks from it. Love the journey of relearning grappling from wrestling to bjj.

Best guard I always recommend to wrestlers (like I was) is the butterfly guard. So many attacks and they don't all require you to go flat on your back. Plus, what better submission to learn than a guillotine so you can do a bunch of front headlocks?

Lovely video... Funny. I made a similar mistake in judo. I was green belt... During randori, in the first 10 seconds I threw a Japanese blackbelt with a wrestling throw, a double leg, Akira (yup, that was his name) then preceded to smash me all over the mat for the next 6 hours (3 min... It felt like 6 hours)... It was kinda cool... There was no malice... It was just like "dude, I'm a black belt... Allow me to teach you"... By the end of the 3 min everyone had cleared the mats to watch us/HIM, he wasn't even allowing me to stand up... He'd pick me up... Put me on my feet, reset me and ask if I was ready, and slam me back into the mat, without hardly touching me in that way that blackbelts can...

I love when white/blue belts fall back for straight ankle locks. Make sure you get that foot off of your hip, keep tension on your foot that they are attacking "the boot"...start hipping out towards that side. Relatively easy to get the top position every time even on bigger opponents. This escape was part of my curriculum back in the day to get my blue belt...drill to win !!!

So my goal in JJ is just to become a better purple belt. Anyway, great video, and great round for both of them, thanks for posting. Jess seems like she prefers to pass and play a top game with good top pressure rather than play guard (judging by this video). I think maybe Jess was kind of letting Josh "work" in the beginning (maybe), but I also think Josh legit tapped Jess with that foot lock (even if it was luck), I don't think Jess just gave that to him. I do think Jess got a little too rough with Josh at the end with that elbow in the face and that knee on the sternum, and I don't think it was quite warranted, but whatever, she is the higher belt. I also don't understand why the narrator was clowning on Josh, I think Josh did a pretty good job considering he is just a beginner going with a Brown Belt. Anyway, I think both of them should get respect, it was a great round. Question for the narrator, are Josh and Jess okay with you posting this video and using their names, while saying unflattering things about Josh? BTW, my prediction is that it won't be long before Josh "catches up" to Jess and starts dominating and tapping her regularly. Jess will enjoy these victories over Josh only for a short time.

Goal, to be able to actrully plan ahead and set up attacks vs pure reaction, I've had some luck and I seem to be progressing well (4 classes a week). Still get flatted out to easly, I'm convinced theirs some concepts I'm either not applying correctly or ignorant of. I seem to be somewhere in the middle in terms of skill with the other white belts, even shocked and submitted a few blue belts if their comments are to be belived. Turtle and granby before side control happens. If side control is inevitable keep both elbows tight and connect hands in front of chest both palm down one on top of the other. This way you always have a frame. Remember a frame does not necessarily need to be at the waist and in front of opponents throat. Marcelo Garcia has interesting concepts on framing and granby's. It is very simple, but very effective.

Better base, more efficient movement, better flow state... I guess my goals are pretty broad, but in the first year is when I would assume the most growth might take place. I would think newbie to kind of okay is an easier transition than pretty good to very good. I guess that the more you grow, the more you have to really push to continue growing. Unless, there is some sort of tipping point where things just come together. Thoughts?
@TylerSpangler
@TylerSpangler 2 года назад
No all the things you listed are great and the correct things to work on. It will all come together around purple belt is what I generally find. Only other tip I always suggest is that if you want to advance faster find ONE submission and work that constantly. Obviously you should know other submissions and how they work, but fear the man that does one kick 1000 times, not 1000 kicks one time. Great job identifying what to work on! Let me know in the future how it’s coming along!

@Javier Fernandez When someone traps your leg with their leg and starts pushing their leg across your waist. This turns the knee and is how most heel hooks are done. We can see Josh do it at 1:03 with Josh's right leg pushing against Jess's left
