Thanks to Vessi for the sponsorship! Their shoes are genuinely amazing. Make sure you head to vessifootwear.... for $40 off your first pair!!! In this video I attempt to learn to speak as much Hindi as possible in 24 hours, and then go talk with total strangers in New York’s Indian / Pakistani / South Asian neighborhood of Jackson Heights. Obviously it’s not possible to learn a language to fluency in 24 hours, but I did learn how to have a basic conversation in 24 hours! As of the start of this video I knew absolutely nothing in Hindi - not the script, not how to say hello or goodbye, nothing. I also did not know any languages related to Hindi so it was a completely new language family for me.
I learned exclusively through tutors on Italki, a website that lets you book language tutors from around the globe. They’re not sponsoring the video or anything, I just like the platform ;-)
Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, which given my time constraints I did not learn for this challenge - instead, I’ll be working through my tutors with romanized transliterations of Hindi. In the future I hope to learn Devanagari!!!
Also be sure to check out Niraz's excellent channel Hindi Learning TV for more Hindi learning advice! / @hindustanitongue

@@justadey_ no. India has 23 national/official languages. Out of which English is the most commonly known nation wide. Hindi is hard if you don't start when your kids are born. I learned Hindi before English even in America and that made it much easier because my brain was then wired to think in Hindi but learning English was easy because I could learn from the hundreds of natural English speakers around me in America. That is why I taught my kids Hindi and French before they turned 6 and started teaching them English at age 5 so they were wired in both Hindi and French while they learned English from their teachers and friends.

Because you're not focused or dedicated. Even in the mediums you consume like anime, marvel etc those fictional characters put in hours, blood sweat and tears to achieve what was written for them to get so if you want dedication and now in the other way you're going to have to work for it as gigi said above. You can't sit there and say "I wish I was him" and then move on the next minute and not make changes. As Sun tzu said: If the mind is willing, the flesh could go on and on without many things. Everyone always seems to me too how "he hasn't actually learned the language" but what you fail to realize if you can learn the language enough to speak and understand day to day stuff, that is how you then branch in to more of the specifics of the language. The sheer fact that this can lead to networking with local Hindi speakers is a huge bonus. Also it's not as easy as you think to even remember the amount he has and to speak it to a degree it's understood and to understand it when a native is speaking it.
@saiminayatullah6620
@saiminayatullah6620 4 года назад
That’s simply not true. Listening skills don’t come out of nowhere, and most of the speakers didn’t seem to particularly care he was speaking Hindi, they just gave short responses to his question. It’s much more pragmatic to focus on comprehension and vocabulary building for a while and then speak. You can only practice what you’ve already learned.

Young man, you have such a gift when it comes to languages. I only know English, and learning new languages just doesn't come naturally to me. You're amazing, and I love watching your videos. It shows so much respect when you speak to someone in their own language.

Weldone for learning hindi quickly. But he's being taught slightly casual way of speaking not respectfully saying 'Suneye!" (Oi!! LISTEN!! LISTEN!!) repeatedly to strangers instead of Suneyeji or bhaisab or bhenji. He also speaks hindi with a chinese accent lool too funny. He needs to watch hindi films he'll learn in 3 hours.😄👍🏾

@Seymour Dix neither of these comments really explain my question. The answer you give makes China and India seem very similar in language demographics. Like in China almost everyone speaks Mandarin, a lot speak Cantonese, and they probably speak their regional language. So, why are Chinese impressed and Indians are not?
@Yellowsnow69420
@Yellowsnow69420 3 года назад
@Seymour Dix there are approximately 300 different languages in China. They have seven main languages with 1.1 billion speaking Mandarin. Approximately 100 million speak one of the other 300 languages.

Learning a different language isn’t that hard tbh I know 7 different language but it took me years I’m 16 rn my parents kinda forced it on me currently learning Japanese now and it’s really easy because 10% of Japanese words are English words and the pronunciation is very similar to Spanish

I think that fact that some of the Indians did not react like the Chinese is that they may have thought he was an American born Indian. India is a diverse country with many complexions, even as light as xiaoma. If you had your mask off I am sure they would be have been happily shocked. Aside from all of that, Xiaoma, this was incredible, So much respect goes out to you to be able to have the energy to power through 24 hours of a new language and actually be able to converse with people! I am so glad I subscribed to this channel.

The Chinese are shocked because he speak very good Mandarin. I don't think anyone would be shocked if he speaks kindergarten level Chinese.
@unclepodger
@unclepodger 4 года назад
It's because Xiaoma's pronunciation wasn't good at all, but I don't blame him - the phonology of Hindi/Urdu (and other Indian languages, they're very similar) is insanely difficult to actually get right. Retroflexes, aspirated consonants (both voiced and voiceless) - which leads to 4 different letters sounding the exact same to the untrained ear, and the fact that the "a" is actually a schwa most of the time, I would say speaking Hindi is harder than Chinese.
