White Nights is Dostoevsky’s surprising detour into romance tinged with loneliness, melancholy, and innocence.
In White Nights, the term “White” can be read as a symbol of innocence, purity, and a kind of unpolluted, hopeful idealism. The white of the atmosphere in St. Petersburg is the summer nights when the sun never fully sets. This creates a more atmospheric, almost dreamlike state contrasting with the bittersweet tone of the story.
Fyodor Dostoevsky has written a short, idyllic, and sentimental romance highlighting themes of loneliness, longing, solitude, hope, friendship, and loss.
I also talk about why this short story feels so different from his well-known works like The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment, and Notes from Underground. And why White Nights is a must-read if you want to experience Dostoevsky’s softer, more sentimental literary side.
