Motivational speech of Gandalf about death not being the end.
Transcript:
Pippin: "I didn't think it would end this way."
Gandalf: "End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path. One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass... then you see it!
Pippin: "What? Gandalf? See what?"
Gandalf: "White shores... and beyond. A far green country, under a swift sunrise."
Pippin: "Well, that isn't so bad."
Gandalf: "No... no, it isn't.

I always thought Ian McKellan really nailed this scene. While the text and idea of the afterlife is already beautiful, for Gandalf the place he is speaking of is home, and Ian really nails the pride in and longing for his home that Gandalf feels here.

The funny thing is that Pippin is not able to go there, he just can go to Mandos for a while. He's not an elf, maiar, or valar, so he can't stay in Valinor, just in Mandos. Hobbits and men have the gift of Iluvatar. In fact what Gandalf is describing is what Frodo wachted while the ship in which he leaved middle earth with Elerond, Galadriel, the very same Gandalf, and Bilbo is approaching to Valinor, I mean, in the book. Even though is not canonical, for me the scene is one of the best of the trilogy, but for sure Tolkien would be angry with it.

Gandalf, almost instantaneously, manages to turn a truly terrifying situation into the most beautiful, most comforting and wholesome moment that I have ever seen on screen. I was only a boy when these movies came out. I used to have nightmares of a dark and depressing nonexistence after death. I was only a small boy so idk why I had these dreams but they were traumatizing. I remember going to the theatre with my dad to watch this movie. This scene brought me to tears and my dad knew why. I always told him about all of my dreams. He tried his best to comfort me but the dreams persisted. But this scene did something that my father tried to do but couldn’t. It was like the light from a lighthouse finally breaking through all the fog. That feeling of dread dissipated. My dreams were no longer haunted. I was free…thank you Tolkien, you saved the dreams of a scared little boy…and for that I will always love you.

Love it how they effortlessly incorporated one of the last lines of LOTR here - the departure of Frodo from the Grey Havens: "And the ship went out to the High Sea and passed on into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise." And the accompanying tune here foreshadows the very last one of the trilogy - the Oscar-wielding song "Into The West"...

I'm not a religious person, but Gandalf's speech is indeed beautiful. The 'logical' part of my mind can't conceive a utopia in the form of afterlife, a world where conflict and death doesn't exist, and we're all just being nice to each other, enjoying company of family and friends and loved ones
@Opnn8d1

The logical part of my mind cannot accept that when we die, we just cease to exist. Even before I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I knew there had to be something bigger than the universe, and that there is an intelligently designed purpose for every molecule that is in it. Where I put my faith merely brought it all into focus. It's not about religion. It's about having a relationship with the Author of the Cosmic Story, of which we are all a part.

The fact anyone could have a certain view on what happens upon death is perplexing to me. We don't understand one of the deepest mysteries of life yet - what it means to be conscious and retain consciousness. There are things we can't explain and have yet to understand. Our logic falls apart when examining the properties of a black hole, for example. How can we pretend to know what happens when we die?

It weirdly reminds me of the scene in 1883 when Shea comforts Elsa after her boyfriend died. It radiates the same kind of comforting energy.

In reality, even if there is no afterlife, the vision you leave behind before death should be enough to comfort you and maybe white shores are the perfect metaphor for slipping into the peace you had before your life even began.

imagine if he broke it down thats the end of gondor they only had 22 men ready to fight plus that was the 4th level so mordor would have captured the top and burned the tree

My favorite part of this scene is the fact that the troll's banging on the door gets progressively muffled as the dialogue goes on. It's something so subtle yet it adds so much emphasis, because like Pipin is in this moment, we're too focused on Gandalf's words to realize it at first (I had to replay this scene about 5 times to actually notice this myself). Idk, I'm just a sucker for the little things

One day a movie will be made about the Silmarillion. And that movie will have to open with this music. Just this music. Then, a light in the dark. And then the intro will begin to tell the story of Eru and the Valars and the creation of Valinor and Middle Earth. This is my hope.

I think Gandalf/Tolkien is speaking about three places: Heaven, the undying lands and Great Britain/England.

I often think that this vision must have been inspired by Tolkien's last look back towards England as he crossed the channel on his way to France heading to the war, and then the unbelievable feeling he must have had coming back home alive afterwards - the white cliffs of Dover and the green downs of the Weald above and beyond them rolling away into the distance bright under the sun beckoning him home.
