Whitehorse presents The Road To Massey Hall, a tribute to the greats who have come to be identified with Canada's premiere venue through memorable performances and live recordings.
"Un Canadien Errant" is a folk song that has been treasured across French-speaking Canadians from the time of the Lower Canada Rebellion onward, and it speaks to the pain of exile and displacement. "Un Canadien Errant" has appeared on albums by foundational Canadian songwriters, including Ian and Sylvia and Leonard Cohen.
The Road To Massey Hall will be available on iTunes on February 15, 2013 and as a limited edition poster with digital download on tour.
Whitehorse debuts at Massey Hall on March 2, 2013.

This song is the unofficial anthem for all French Canadians living outside Québec. Yes it was written for those who were exiled from Lower Canada after the rebellion of the 1830's, but its themes of exile, pride, and belonging strongly resonates with French Canadian communities scattered across the continent. It might as well have been written by my ancestors who left Québec for Missouri in the 1850's for economic reasons. It is one of the very few songs, my dad sang to me while growing up in Northern Ontario. J'me donne le devoir d'enseigner cette chanson à mes enfants.

Je ne comprends pas trop bien pourquoi vous écrivez en anglais, d'autant plus que vous revendiquez votre ascendance acadienne, que vous semblez bien maîtriser le français. Vous avez parfaitement le droit d'apprendre cette chanson à vos enfants. D'autant plus, si j'ai bien compris, que vous viviez en Ontario et que le français est une des langues officielles du Canada, par ailleurs un pays particulièrement démocratique tant que certaines communautés n'auront pas imposé leurs lois. @@yechmad3756 J'ai dû écrire en anglais pour la même raison que vous avez dû me répondre en français et non en breton. Le tout dépend du public cible. Dans cette situation, je m'adressais aux Canadiens anglophones qui cherchent à comprendre le sens de cette chanson... tout simplement. Et oui, la dernière phrase en français vise les anglophones qui se donneront la peine d'appuyer sur le bouton "traduction".

I’m learning violin and a simplified version of this song was in my book. My francophone grandma wanted me to play so I played this one. She cried and said her father used to sing it to her when she was a girl in Saskatchewan.

What a poignant, wonderful version of "Un Canadien errant". Best I've heard. As a French-speaking Canadian, I am very touched by your interpretation. I'm writing a novel relating on the sad events of 1837, here in QC that led to the creation of this song (1842). Your song is the ultimate symbol that beyond the hardships that populates our common history, we can truly become the same people when we take the time to respect our differences. Your 'Canadien errant' is my novels soundrack! Cheers!

Une superbe chanson, et quand bien même l'interprétation de WhiteHorse et plus encore de Leonard Cohen sont respectables, on aimerait l'entendre dans la langue du pays. Et c'est un Breton, défenseur d'une petite langue qui se meurt qui vous le dit. Bevet Quebec ha Breizh dieub !!!

I first learned this song in French class in primary school. I was so young that I can’t remember the actual classes at all now… but I’ve never forgotten this song, even if I lost one of the verses.

It’s not exactly what it’s about, he got exiled from Canada and everytime he thinks about his home, Quebec, he feels sad about what happened with all of the deaths and everything

@@user-qz1nx8je3o La révolution des Patriotes était à la base menée contre la corruption gouvernementale. D'ailleurs, le Haut-Canada (l'Ontario) s'est révolté en même temps. La narrative de la guerre contre les Anglais frôle le révisionnisme historique. Bien que cette élément anti-britannique ait joué un rôle, c'est fondamentalement une révolte contre "La clique du château" au Bas-Canada et le "Family Compact" au Haut-Canada.

Cette interprétation me tire les larmes. En plus par des ''maudits anglais''. Que ceux qui peuvent comprendre tout le sens de cette chanson puissent le comprendre. !837, un chant de patriote pour ceux qui savent qu'ils doivent tout a ceux qui nous ont précédé.

Beautiful! I live in the Great Northwoods of NH...15 miles from the border, and we have a lot of French Canadian here. I'm a musician, and although I'm a Celtic musician, I'm open to learning! And learning I am!!

This is so beautiful. I saw them a few nights ago in Fort Lauderdale and it broke my heart because there were only like 40 people there, but I'm so glad I got to see them. They are impeccable.

QZ, ce n'était pas le premier but. L'objectif des révoltes de 1837-38 était la démocratie, d'avoir un gouvernement responsable qui soit dirigé par les élus et non par un gouverneur britannique qui prenait ses ordres de Londres.

Un canadien errant Chant canadien-français composé en 1842 par Antoine Gérin-Lajoie suite à la répression des soulèvements patriotes de 1837-38 par les Britanniques. Des centaines de patriotes ont été arrêtés, plusieurs ont été déportés en Australie, d'autres furent pendus à la prison du Pied-du-Courant à Montréal et inspirèrent l’auteur.À l’époque, le canada désigne le Bas-Canada donc le Québec.

no it's not a song against Canada. the english canadians of ontario also rebelled in 1837. the rebellion was against the british imperial power which prevented canadians from having a responsible government and which committed many injustices. The repression was very hard in Quebec. Several were hanged, others were exiled to Australia and the Bahamas. 1300 farms were burnt in the Richelieu valley, women raped by British soldiers ...

Bien sûr Éric que ce n'est pas un chant contre le Canada, puisque le Canada dans ce temps-là, c'était notre patrie. Les Anglais n'ont commencé à se dire Canadian qu'aux environs de la première guerre mondiale...le temps avait fait son œuvre et ils avaient oublié que ce nom était le nôtre. Il faut le dire à toutes les occasions. Aussi, ce n'était pas les Bahamas mais les Bermudes.

Hearing this song being sang by canadians is the biggest irony there is. This song is about how when french speaking canadians (which used to be the only ones called canadians. canada used to refer to the lands occupied by french canadians in lower canada) tried to rebel against the english. This song is not a "canadian song" . It is a song AGAINST canada.

Your comment is ironic. The people who have a right to this land are the First Nations people. France and Britain were imperial powers constantly at war and they brought that hostility to this continent. Many indigenous cultures were wiped out by that imperialism so be glad that French Canadian heritage and culture is alive and well despite the course of history.

Bin oui chum. Enweye donc promener le monde qui s'intéresse à nous autres pis qui prennent le temps d'essayer de nous comprendre. Tu sais autant que moé que cte chanson-là a été pratiquement censurée par les nationalistes wokes du Québec à cause des mots "Canadien" et "Canada". (Les nationalistes québécois, c'était les wokes avant les wokes américanisés d'aujourd'hui.) Et même, c'est même possible que ces artistes-là nous comprennent mieux que nous on se comprend nous même. On peut bin être en déclin.

Oy, l’appropriation culturelle, c'est très bien. Que des gens d'autres cultures chantent et aiment cette chanson, c'est très bien. Nana Mouskouri et de nombreux autres la chante aussi très bien. Si par ailleurs, ils ne comprennent pas l'historique de ce chant, il suffit de leur expliquer...respectueusement. Celle de Whitehorse est très bien.

Kel, you know everybody has scapegoats. Yes, the French sometimes laugh at our accents as we do of the Acadian accent...and the Acadians probably make fun of Cajuns, etc. etc.
