What an incredibly therapeutic video to watch as well as instructional. I'm hoping to buy a set of whittling knives very soon. I think I'd be fine with the different types of cut but I struggle with visualizing the 3 dimensionality of the project. This tutorial was extremely helpful. What a patient man you appear to be, and patience is an essential quality of a good teacher. My very first carving project was going to be Notre Dame Cathedral in France...every single brick, but I think I'll just start with the dog instead 😃Many thanks, my friend. Greetings from Scotland 👍
Thank you so much for watching ..practice ..practice ..practice and take your time ..read about whittling and start on easy projects to get use to it ..Thank you
Thank you so much! I'm a beginner, so I really appreciate how slow you are going for us and really carefully going through each step! Thanks for taking the time to make this video! I'll try to be very careful per Samuel's post. I saw that there are gloves that can be purchased, however, I don't have the extra money for that.
Excellent videos, Gene! I'm looking into buying my first woodcarving set, so that I can try out some projects like this. This seems like such a fun and rewarding hobby/skill to learn. Thank you for sharing your craft with us! :)
Gene.. Thank you so much for your videos. They are the best resource I have found on the internet for learning to carve. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this. Thank you! Also.. where do you buy your carving wood? I am having trouble finding a reasonable priced source for basswood. That stuff is expensive!
Gene Messer I wound up ordering from Wilcox woodworks. Cheaper than other places and the wood carves pretty nice. Nice and white. Not the yellow reddish stuff I have seen here in the south.
Very good tutorial, I mostly carve greenwood bowls and spoons but I am trying to get into figurine carving. Any recommendations on a good small knife, I currently use a nick Westermann Sloyd knife but it’s a little much for projects like this?
Hi Gene, love the videos. You're like the Bob Ross of wood carving. Just wondering if you remember what size the blank was that you started off with for this dog?
Hi Gene, I'm looking for a tutorial zu carve a horse. Do you have one in your playlist or can you do me the favour to make on. Best regards from Germany. Keep going with the nice videos!
Do you have a recommendation for a knife or kit for a 12 year old just starting out? I bought a kids kit called adventure station whittlin' wood and the knife broke ( pocket knife style) the first day. Please send a suggestion!
OK first of all i need you to answer these first questions ...Are you the adult asking for this young man ? Are you a man or woman ? Do you have any idea of working with wood ? and what kind of cost are you looking at in purchasing a whittling set ? ..Iam sorry Iam not trying to pry ..I just need to know some info on getting you started
Since the dog has the tail sticking out quite thin, does the grain have to be directed in the direction of the tail? What is the thickness approximately of the piece of basswood?
Would you be interested in trying a few products for GRIP On Tools and reviewing them? I have two that I can think of, off the top of my head that would probably be very helpful.
Art if your just beginning ..you may not know how to sharpen your tools correctly yet ..it is very important to watch videos on carving knife sharpening ...I dont know what kind of knife or wood your using ..but learning to sharpen is very important
@@whittler0507 they are brand new to I figured they were already sharpened. Maybe I don't have the right wood. But they carving tools I am using are not the same as his.i am also a beginner
Sure, video is good and simple, but first you have to have a saw good enough and skills with that saw good enough to make that dog figure..=D Not really starter stuff... But sure the video doesn't explain safety and work with they knife, what type of knife is needed. So definitely not a starter video. Sure cute though... To answer questions of others, as looks like the maker not going to do that, choose very soft wood. Birch tree or any other soft tree will do the trick. It is easier to start with the soft wood.
