This is a great beginners tutorial. Very detailed demonstration. Those who complain about the pace haven't taken many art classes. I am going to finally whittle myself something other than splinters. Thank you.
I love how you break this project down into segments for the body. It really helps me with learning shapes and proportions for my figure carving. I appreciate that you assume the beginner knows very little if anything about carving figures. Thank you for taking the time to put together these beginner projects. I for one truly appreciate it! Happy New Year!
Gene, you have been an inspiration to me and, along with a couple of other folks, have inspired me to begin, learn and improve my skills carving. I dontbthink that enough people understand how LIFE CHANGING carving can be. Something about the interaction between your head, hands, blade and wood that is deeper in one's psyche than might be realized. Thank you for the knowledge you share.
Thank you Jim for the kind words ..Thats all I ever wanted ..just to help people learn this great hobby and have fun ..Thank you so much for watching and carve safely ..God Bless
Excellent job I use a two blades Barlow pocket knife a small blade for detail work and a large blade for roughing work the Barlow is ridiculous comfortable rough rider pocket knives are best cheap and like most knives need a tune up on strop or stones greetings from the uk 🇬🇧 👍🇮🇹🐾🦊
Just love it. I made a little girl yesterday. For a little 8 yr old girl. It was this video I had to think about to get started. It a wonderful teacher ❣️
Just wanted to say thank you for this video! I'm always looking for new things to do and I was trying to decide if I wanted to get into whittling or not. After watching your tutuorial, I think it's definitely something I'm going to try! :D
Wonderful video, I remember my dad carved me a star wars style lightsaber to play with in the wood with my friends (the laser part was imaginary!) Thanks for making this, and Merry Christmas/have a happy new year from the uk.
I found out wittling from an app on the google store. After well googling it for a hit, i found your videos. I plan on getting into it with your winderful tutorials.
Brilliant video. Just subscribed, recommended by Doug Linker. Odd that Messer is German for Knife 😀 I have a friend who is a professional chainsaw carver, named Chris Wood 😅
great video for someone like me who has no idea about how to start. what kind of carving knifes are a good place to start? (ignore the negative posts...some people are just full of poison)
Thank you so much for this video! I just wanted to ask if you had any recommendations for a good whittling knife. I have a bunch of detail tools but I'm still missing that one GOOD whittling knife.
Loved this Gene you know me I have carved for years but I always learn something new from you ,thanks for sharing I'm giving a class today this will help.
I just began carving. I did a basswood spoon then took a small piece of clear pine and did a face. Both woods seem to be very close in hardness and texture. Would you agree pine is a very good alternative? One pine board from the store goes a long way...thanks...
Most beginners have a issue with sharpening their knives right ..I suggest you go to you tube and google sharpening carving knives and watch the proper way to sharpen a carving knife ..typical beginners problem
you must know how to sharpen the knife correctly ..it must be razor sharp to cut through the wood ..I would suggest getting a carving knife to carve with ..let me know
Gene...I most definitely will keep you posted. I ordered my knife after seeing your reply. One final question on this thread: Do you have a video on how to sharpen your carving knife? If so, can you share the link here for me? I did scroll through your videos for quite some time but couldn't locate anything for as far as I've scrolled. If you don't have a video, there's my video request for you for a future video. Haha! Joking aside, I'd be very interested in learning all of the steps on how to sharpen the knife and how to keep it honed since that's a very important step in the carving process, so I've learned.
@@bellachig8027 Doug Linker (who was inspired by this man, Gene Messer) has a video on the subject. If you hone it on a leather strop with some polishing/cutting compound, and do it regularly, you will never need to use a stone. It couldn't be easier (unlike sharpening a chisel or plane iron)!
Point of View: (*-See Below) In listening to the beginning measurements, the feet was marked at 'measure about 1/2 inch, then draw your line 1/8 inch past that. Make it 3/8 of an inch.' 1/2 inch = 4/8. If you draw your line 1/8 past that, it will be 5/8 inch. I don't think I missed it, but you can correct this. In all the delicate cuts developing the arms, "you can cut it like this, but it's better if you make this kind of cut." Your thumb blocked the whole demonstration. I am impressed by your results, and you come highly recommended, but everyone has their own way of carving a caricature. You take a 1 inch x 1 inch x 4 inch piece and carve face on. Almost all others who demonstrate beginner's carving take a 1 inch x 1 inch x 4 inch piece and carve by using the corner as the focal point whereby they develop the structures from there. Thank you for your instruction. I am the kind of life-long learner who will take from whatever instruction I can and apply it where I need to. (* = I am the world's foremost expert on my own opinion.)
Ok 🤣🤣Obviously you spend a lot of time on numbers ..measurements and correct analysis ..I dont .. When I carve I can sit down and not even thinking about all that just have fun carving a figure ..I suppose maybe thats all necessary for some people but in doing caricatures .. I have a lot more fun just working it all in my head ..With all that analysis of how you figure on doing something ..why dont you have a you tube channel yourself teaching people how to do something ..you sound intelligent enough too ..Think about trying to do it sometime ..God Bless
Not watched all yet will try to. I got a pocket knife 3 blades i didn't really want a fixed blade because Cant really take it around like a pocket knife. Is it still ok doing whittling with it? I hope when i finish ill be able to do this with what i got
Between 1/2 and 3/4 is 5/8. 3:20 Looking at the tape I think you meant 5/8 but later in the video you said 3/8 again 4:30 and 5:00 Maybe do a text over with the correct dimension?
