Boko Haram is the name of an Islamist group founded in Northern Nigeria though they are also active in neighbouring Cameroon, Benin, Chad and Niger, being one of the largest such groups in Africa. In this video I look at their origin, ideology and beliefs, as well as their more famous action like that of the kidnapped schoolgirls of Chibok and later splits within the group.

Nice video, only thing I disagree with as being salafist myself, is that it's extreem.. salafism itself is a moderate version. It are those people who give it a bad name. As they call themselves salafi, while they hold no link towards the people of sunnah and the salaf(pious predecessors). This while salafi scholars such as sheikh Salih al-Fawzan from Saudi-Arabië calls these rebels/khawarij non-Muslims. Due to their extreme beliefs which hold no foundation in islam. Some things they take from Qur'an, such as that the earth is flat, but that's because they interpreted it according to desires and lack of knowledge. As the verse mentioning it says that He stretched it out to make it flat from our perspective, so it looks flat, but is not.

I suggest reading about Ibrahim Zakzaky and his Islamic movement that is kinda the shia counter Islamic movement in Nigeria against the extremely radical beleifs of boko haram and he supposedly have managed converting more than 5 million Nigerians to shia Islam in a short period of time, for context in 1979 there were practically no shiaas in Nigeria 🇳🇬. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibrahim_Zakzaky

The fact that they so inherently believe that Islam is their de facto guide of life but fail to realize that this religion was brought from the middle east and forced into their own people is ironic. They should be proud of their local roots and traditions and not fight like that for other peoples ideals. If the Middle East Caliphate was still around they would catch those black people and use them as slaves as it still happens in Lybia. They should get rid of this religion and those foreign traditions.

One of my very good friends from law school is from southern Nigeria, and obviously very Christian. Even 15 years ago before ISIS was a thing, he was warning me that his country was ripe for turning into a fractured Islamic/Christian warring state and that radicals were taking over the north, but no one was talking about it nearly enough.

@@mcgilldi People of the book are absolved from that, but I'm not gonna pretend that the group so terrible that ISIS wanted to cut ties with it gave a damn. If you want more on this, you can read the "Letter to Al Baghdadi" written by many Islamic scholars and sent to Baghdadi in 2014. You can read the English version. It pretty much destroys a lot of their arguments.

The 2002-2003 attacks were not really terror attacks, they were more like gangs formed around the boko haram sect fighting another similar group for fishing and other small scale economic rights. They only really started in like 2008-2009.

You should do a video on the use of South African contractors in African conflicts after the old SADF was disbanded in the 1990's. Apart from fighitng in Sierra Leone and ANgola quite afew of them were also briefly invovled in the war against Boko Haram before diplomatic pressure from the US forced the Nigerina government to cancel their contract.

You omitted the fact that NATO inadvertently brought about the rise of Boko Haram in 2011 due to their illegal intervention and invasion of Libya which resulted in the entire Sahel being flooded with both sophisticated weapons from NATO stockpiles as well as less sophisticated weapons from Gadaffi's arms cache which in turn made it easier for terrorist groups like Boko Haram to acquire the arms and ammunition required to intensify their jihad by increasingly the severity and frequency of their attacks
