There’s a problem with saying that angels can just directly reproduce: it doesn’t jive with what Our Lord says in Mt; very specifically, He says angels cannot reproduce. However, Angels could reproduce via a host whom they control via demonic possession. This would also give them a vehicle to teach secret/ occult arts, and it would mean they could help raise their Nephilim offspring to be “men of renown.” Demonic possession would also get them close to events so that they could guide events even more.

Personally I hold either to rulers and common women or a variation on temptation or corruption by teaching of sinful arts (magic, guile etc). For one those do not require explaining the follow-up question: 'If then why do we not see this now?', and all the headaches and trouble trying answer that would lead to. It is also consistent with not violating the natures of the spiritual vs physical on such a fundemental level. I do not know the words but the alternative just seems a wholy different order of magnitude of corruption that we just do not really see, it blurs things on a more fundemental level. As an artist myself, I might theorize that a figure of a person in a sun, moon, or star is not an alien being, but a celestial being, or intelligence. What we commonly refer to as an angel. It's often conjectured that Saint Uriel is given charge over the Sun and Saint Gabriel given charge over the moon. No theological source will state that as fact and it's mostly in the genres of poetry and legends that we find this. However, I do know of a BEAUTIFUL Basilica in Saint Louis Missouri with all kinds of mosaics. It depicts and specifically names seven Archangels before the Throne of God. It even mentions a number of constellations they preside over. Okay, so how was this information conveyed to the inexplicably talented people who designed this masterpiece of the Faith? I'd really like to know that.

Just one thing, he says that ancient hebrews were a little over 5ft tall and anyone 6 or 7 foot would be considered a giant. The Bible says that king Saul was a head taller than the others. He was never referred to as a giant. Even when Goliath challenged and mocked Israel Saul wouldn’t fight him and Goliath is called a giant. That’s just a small thing I wanted to point out. This is a very good episode. Lots to think about! I like Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich's explanation about the Nephilim and the angels that were cast down from heaven. It makes sense to me, and may even answer questions about certain things that have puzzled modern man - the Easter Island Heads, the advanced civilizations of the Aztecs and South American peoples. I saw Cain's descendants becoming more and more godless and sensual. They settled further and further up that mountain ridge where were the fallen spirits. Those spirits took possession of many of the women, ruled them completely, and taught them all sorts of seductive arts. Their children were very large. They possessed a quickness, an aptitude for everything, and they gave themselves up entirely to the wicked spirits as their instruments. One of Cain's descendants was Thubalcain, the originator of numerous arts, and the father of the giants. I have frequently seen that, when the angels fell, a certain number had a moment of repentance and did not in consequence fall as low as the others. I had this really weird thing happen what I was listening to y'all, at about the point where Jimmy was discussing the book of Job, and my phone just started making some weird sounds, and the video was fast-forwarding, which is really weird on RU-vid,, that it would be making some kind of weird sound with it. Wonderful discussion! I've been listening to a lot Great Courses lectures on Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilization in the past few years and it has really opened up my understanding of the political and cultural context of the Old Testament. It has also helped me with some of the anxieties I used to feel about interpreting Genesis and what the text was intended to convey. I think even the long ages of the patriarchs might be consistent with Mesopotamian literature. Doesn't the Sumerian king list do the same thing with its first rulers? I think I favor a more literary interpretation of the sons of God in which there is no literal mating between angelic and human beings, but it does leave me wondering what the theological / spiritual status of the Nephilim would be if they literally were the children of fallen angels and human women. Would they still have had free will not to sin? The only other theory about the Nephilim that I know of came from a RU-vid comment on a Neanderthal documentary I watched about a year ago. This guy was arguing that the Nephilim were the offspring of Neanderthals and humans. I found his arguments completely implausible, unsupported by the text of Genesis, and (since the text seems to take a dim view of the interactions, whatever they were) a bit offensive to my Neanderthal-loving sensibilities. But that's just me. Can't wait for the Nemesis death star episode! Do we get to talk about the dinosaurs???? :-)

In the movie NOAH starring Russell Crow, the Nephilim were Angel's who chose to fall to earth to help Noah. Their punishment was to be encrusted in rock.

@Jimmy Akin Michael Heiser believes that there were several falls of angels (the initial fall of Lucifer, the fall of the "Watchers" when they intermarry with men and the fall of some of the "principalities" after Babel). Would this perspective be compatible with the Catholic faith?

I'm open to angels concept. The part that concerns me theologically about it though has to do with the souls of the Nephilim. God wishes all men to be saved and gives everyone enough graces to do so. Salvation is not for the fallen angels, however it was their choice to sin. Yet the Book of Enoch seems to indicate that the souls of these giants were damned from birth - unless I am misunderstanding. That provides a problem to me. If the souls are damnable then they must have the ability to reason right from wrong, but it does not seem like they are given a chance to do so. I am very confused by that. I am sure there is a good theological explanation, but I am just not sure what it is.

So, one of my questions is: -If angels (sons of God) have no physical bodies (due to them being beings of light) how are they able to procreate with people?

Great job, as to be expected of this channel. I personally accept the idea that the term meant 'great ones' as 'chieftains' or lords or sovereigns and that they 'came down' was a cartographic or geographic reference, and the writers and scribes mixed the usage up. As for the specifics of angels not having any desire for earthlings ie children of 'Adam' ('earthling' in Hebrew), Aquinas reasoned that an angel is a species in their own right, which also makes sense that they would not have reproductive desire. So much for modern myths about angels 🤣. So I never had a difficulty with these biblical passages, and thankfully, Catholic exegesis and contemplation of scripture gives one freedom, whereas I think Protestants tend to seek scripture to affirm something he hold to be true ie believe.

I personally subscribe to the Book of Enoch’s explanation.

Great episode. Thanks for keeping me entertained while I stock the beer and liquor at work! I like the "demons manipulating DNA strands after playing matchmaker" theory and the "the king's bastard children" theory.

See I disagree with your counter argument that angels are able to eat and etc. because the author of Tobit actually addresses this issue at the end of the book where the Archangel Raphael says "All these days I merely appeared to you and did not eat or drink, but you were seeing a vision." -Tobit 12:19. He does this to show how a spiritual being seemed to be eating along the journey. Now it is obvious that angelic beings are able to interact with physical objects as they often do, but the appearance that they may be doing so physically just may very well be visions. Now from the reason side of things I very well think that the author of Genesis may have been thinking of it as they literally interbred with humans.

King Solomon was extremely wise and he told about breeding certain slaves together for certain purposes. It makes sense to me that angels might be able to alter genetics organisms or tempt certain people to breed to create larger humans. In the parable of the man who died and his brothers each marrying his brothers wife, they ask whose wife she will be in heaven. Jesus tells them they are in error in their understanding of the scriptures and that in heaven they will be as the angels not giving in marriage. I've often wondered if Samson might have been one of these men of renown, but the Bible doesn't describe him as a giant. Instead it talks about his great strength.

Could it be that the sons of God were fallen angels at that point who then possessed individuals in order to begin manipulating who mated with whom?

Love this episode. Thank you for rationalizing my gut instinct on this topic. :). This seems the only logical reason God would wipe out the Earth with a Flood.

I think it's pretty clean the flood narrative is inspired by the epic of Gilgimesh, and the nephalim are Giglimesh's linniage. Or. It could also be the origin of all of the stories of old with giants, and great men who are demi-gods. I think that It is about Idol worship which leads to violence, so the story of the flood is God dealing with all of that. Notice, pride is a big issue too in the bible with the story of babel? I think Noah's ark story is about idol worship, and how that leads to a corruption of God's people, and God explaining that it grieves him, so he puts and end to it, and saves a remnant, cleansing the earth water, and protecting his people. Jews are about thier people.. big on how God is with his people, and against evil idol worshippers.. That topic was a major major thing, because they are making a distinction between God's people, and others, or how idol worship entered into God's people, and God being against it. Notice how Moses notes "You shall have no other God's before me". Big big deal, and big theme, and lens through which to read the old testiment. Also, it could said possibly, and Nephertiti was apart of that, or the creator of some of these Gods.. Nephertiti.. Nepehlim. The demi-god children of her. Genesis was written kind of close to these in proximity land wise, so. Those are my thoughts, and think they are probably the closest fit.

Note: 1) Angel does not have the ability to reproduce. 2) The power of the angel come from God, fallen Angels "demons" do not have the same power of the Angels of God anymore since they rejected God. There is no way that demons could reproduce in any way, that would make demons at the same power level of God because God is the unique creator. Demons don't have the desire to create anything instead they want just to destroy God creation. If fallen Angels were the ones that commit sins why humans have to pay for their mistakes. Humans would be innocent victims for the acts of fallen Angels.

I think i solved the nephalim issue. I propose they were God's of the Mesopotamia God's, or Sumerian, and they bore children that were semi-Gods.. gilimesh etc.. and since there was idol worship, and violence, which led to the flood. Bam.

This teaching is wrong the sons of God in the old Testament always refures to them as angels. Look up Chuck Missler for truth in this subject. Don't be decieved by false teachers.
