@@DamianS78 Refurbished probably, they seem to all be around $500 Not like that’s gonna be any problem since it’s a Thinkpad, that thing could probably survive the Biblical apocalypse
@@gilanggilang9859 Same except I got the i7-8650u 16gb ram and 256gb ssd. Mine has a little scratch on the right side but it isn't noticeable unless you pay close attention. :)
New ThinkPads are fucking awful they have solderd ram no removable battery there thin the new keyboard is awful compared to the T420 and back keyboard the T480 is the last good ThinkPad anything beyond this is a butchered price of shit
The fingerprint reader is in the RIGHT place. If it's on the ower button, you risk clicking it in and Windows will power down or hibernate, while trying to logon. That's just mental to me. When you're trying to login, you already have your hands near the keyboard or touchpad. So the fingerprint near that, makes total sense.
The macbook pro handles this by ignoring the shutdown signal if it asks for a finger scan. But none the less its honestly whatever you prefer. Oh and the macbook keyboard is utterly DISGUSTING.
Indeed. Compared to what I'm typically forced to look at during Hangouts sessions, the quality of the webcam looks pretty darn good, especially as the cam is up high instead of down by the keyboard where they always produce those up-the-nose shots.
Linus don't encourage Lenovo X1 carbon series to have a bigger track pad. We use it for typing and non stop functionality. It's better and more ergonomic to have a middle sized track pad is better.
That, and nobody ever uses the trackpad on these. If you're at a desk you have a mouse (admit it: everyone plugs in their mouse to their laptop when at a desk) and if you're not a desk, the trackpoint is just fine. Trackpads need to go extinct.
@@hadenclaire I use trackball mice, so I've been known to use my trackball while walking around with a laptop. I never have understood the point of huge trackpads; I tend to rest my wrist on the computer while using it, so if I have to pick up and move my wrist...Why don't I just pick up and reposition my finger?
I use the trackpoint, the only thing I use the trackpad is for two finger scrolling. The track point is faster to use than a mouse so I don't use mice anymore. A pro tip set the track point speed to max and learn to use light touch, you will never use a mouse again.
Mp57navy that is so stupid im going to assume you just said that because you have a somewhat powerful desktop and are so full of yourself that you need to despise laptops to remind yourself how great you are for having a (probably shitty) desktop pc
Just got my third ThinkPad. I love Lenovo's whole approach towards this laptop, it nails the basics without much compromise. I am glad they managed to keep the ThinkPad brand alive even after so long since acquisition from IBM, they really did justice to it by not making it another Windows laptop in the market by copying a Mac design.
The fingerprint reader is in the RIGHT place. Whenever I come back to my laptop, I don't want to have to reach far out. I want to unlock Windows while I'm sitting down in my chair in a seamless move.
ThinkPads are supposed to be ThinkPads, not macbooks. I don't understand the obsession with bigger trackpads. If anything, it is easier to type if you have a smaller or nonexistent trackpad. That seemed like a pretty good webcam to me but, then again, it is hardly the thing that I value most in a laptop. Now when it comes to being able to replace RAM, the X1 Carbon is a FAIL. It seemed pretty great up until that point.
Actually, trackpoint is one of the main reason why I bought Thinkpad. I know it's not for everyone. But, considering its price, Thinkpad isn't for everyone So, yep, Thinkpad X1 Carbon is trying to impress me, and I am totally impressed
As a happy owner of a 5th gen X1 Carbon, the value proposition comes down to what kind of person you are. If you want a laptop that you can buy, and continue using for a LONG time, the X1 is a great choice. I’m a full time college student, and my tech doesn’t get treated nicely (think regular dropping on hard floors). My computer sustained virtually no physical damage, and the selection of ports are as stiff as day one. Buy a Surface laptop if you want a great computer for a few years, buy a Carbon if you want a good computer for a decade.
100% agreed. I use one in the service industry as a technician, and it has been dropped off ladders with only minor blemishes to the corners. The 5th gen is Rock solid, I can only hope that the 6th gen will be exactly the same build quality.
How's the battery life been? I have a surface pro 4 that (at whoppin 2 years old) is dying on me and I'm looking for a laptop that'll actually last (that's not a Mac)
The battery life on the X1 is pretty impressive. When it was new, I could easily expect 7-10hrs of battery (with standard settings), after about 4 years of heavy use and a decent amount of abuse, I still see 5-8hrs (again, depending on use.) My only complaint I have with mine is the necessity for the LAN adapter/dongle when using a wired network connection. As a service tech who is using the LAN connection constantly, it's a little inconvenient, and the dongle has started to show signs of wear. With this type of use though I can easily expect that. That is the only complaint I can come up with about it.
it seems laptop OEMs will never move on from that same 2007 720p camera module, with just the odd tablet-laptop thingy here and there sporting a 5MP sensor from a 2013 phone or something
EspHack thickness of the sensor module is probably a big limiting factor in laptops compared to phones front facing cameras. Even still they should be a lot better, especially on business class devices. Being the one in the conference call with really bad audio/video is not a good subconscious impression to leave
Damiano Truzzi I think it may possibly have something to with the custom software used by the best smartphone cameras like the pixel ,also the pixel has a dedicated imaging chip .but that said OEMs can definitely do better that what is the current standard
EspHack I think it's because no one really uses it? None of the people I know use the camera on a laptop...either phone, dedicated webcam, or actual camera. Itd be nice, but I think if they improved it, most still would not use it. Still, there should be at least an option to provide a better quality camera on top of the line laptops or even, have it as an add on upgrade for like 30-40 bucks.
A business laptop has to have a good webcam + good audio! That's one of the reasons why you buy them. On a mainstream laptop you really don't need it anymore (smartphones are better for that), therefore the OEMs can leave them out and make super slim bezels instead
I don't really understand the appeal of them these days. They were made back in the day as an alternative to trackpads since trackpads in those days were horrible. But now that trackpads are fantastic, I fail to see the appeal.
@Fizzbuzz Idk, I just could never get used to it. It's like you have 0 control over your mouse with it. I mean I get they were super useful back in the day when touchpads were horrible, but now that touchpads are so precise and easy to use, I don't really get the appeal of trackpoints outside of maybe coding.
Nathan Hromanik Exactly, I am a virgin who has a T470s with touchscreen issued by my company, and I can confidently say that it’s a much better experience being a virgin than using a trackpoint. The touchscreen, tho, gives me a whole lot better experience, like finally something from the civilized world on a thinkpad.
Lenovo for business is the only choice I'd ever go with. The range of options, such as sim slots, number of ports, battery options, over all build quality and mostly the awesome dock support makes it a no brainer. I have used nothing but Lenovo for business over the last 7-8 years, and the first ones I got are still running strong.
You have unlimited access to all things computers, no matter how expensive, yet you still take the time to mention how much things cost. I appreciate this.
I clicked this video because I just watch most things Linus does, but from the title and thumbnail I had no idea what this video was about. Anyone looking for a review of this, or any laptop for that matter likely won’t click it.
I actually like small track pads, cause the large ones always in my way when I'm writing my novel :D so mainly that's why I will go with this laptop for work! :)
looking at front cameras on smartphones, every single laptop is pure shit. You have to search a while to find a laptop with more than 1 MP camera, while smartphones have 8+ MP for years. The OnePlus 3T has even 16 MP and yet you can buy the latest Asus Notebooks with 0.3 MP. This is a disaster.
True but when you consider how well Front Facing Camera has gotten on smartphones, you kind of start asking why is none of the laptop manufacturers are using those sensors?
Why is the choice almost always low-res matter or hi-res glossy? I guess people just fall for the glossy screen when they see it in the store since it tends to make the contrast pop a bit more, but I despise glossy monitors.
I think colour reproduction is better on glossy, so maybe the companies figure if you need high resolution, you are designing stuff and glossy screens with good reproduction is what you want. Matte screens are good for text and text doesn't really need high resolutions or accurate colour reproduction.
You forgot to mention one of the best upgrades for these, especially for the traveler... you can install a WWAN module(or cellular wireless card) - a feature not found on a lot of other laptops All in all I really like my 4th gen, though I do have a small crack in the top case. A friend got a 2nd gen refurb that failed under warranty and he got it replaces with a refurb TS4XX model. My sister got a 5th gen just as they went on sale before the refresh and likes it as well. Also superfish was never on the business class laptops. In spite of all the shenanigans they play with consumer grade hardware, the business lines remain fairly solid and no-nonsense.
Konstantinos I thought the video was going to be really deep and philosophical. Edit- Video title was changed from "who are you trying to impress" without the computer name or anything.
Well they noticed the mistake and fixed it within hours after its upload... A "terrible" title is a bit too dramatic, and whether you were looking for this laptop or not you still found the video anyways so why does it make a difference?
I am using the X230 released in 2013 .. had to switch to Linux for performance on this older machine. Very happy with it. It will last another 3 years for sure.
@@unbroken1010 That's no excuse for a notebook at a premium price point with mediocre performance specs. A $400 notebook doesn't need a great microphone. A $1,500 business oriented notebook should have the best microphone they can fit in it. Microsoft, Apple, and Dell don't seem to have an issue with that.
Trackpoints are just so easy and precise when you get used to it. Trackpads always feel glitchy on any non-apple laptop. I don't get why people do not enjoy the trackpoints. It's like one of the best inventions on a laptop IMO.
What’s keeping me buying the ThinkPad is the TrackPoint. Little red dot are awesome, I never tried Carbon. But I love my T470. They aren’t on the top of the line but heck they are reliable.
Thanks for updating the title, this is a video I've been waiting for and while I understand you guys need to make enticing titles in order to get as much viewership as possible, I personally may have skipped the video if it weren't for knowing the subject of the video to begin with.
Please do a Thinkpad P1 review. None of the big channels reviewed the P1 and it's the one workstation that far surpass the MacBook Pro top configuration
+Frigid Farmerwhoisrelegiousinaweidway this is worse than the xps 13 video title and thumbnail for certain I was fine with the first move away from the broll with simple text on top but this legit has nothing to do with the thinkpad.
This is funny to watch after other thinkpad videos which all complained about the trackpad being too big and only one button, while demanding this trackpad back into the future versions. Also this version has centered keyboard which many of the new ones don't have so this is pretty much perfect thinkpad if you ignore the price and non-existant repairability.
(For anyone reading this) For those who weren't born in 1986 or before: The so-called "nub" / "mouse nipple" = is actually called a "Pointing Stick". The so-called "trackpad" = is actually called a "Touchpad". ("Trackpoint" is actually a proprietary name given by IBM (and later Lenovo). Similar to "Kleenex", "Velcro", and "Xerox" (in that they are all proprietary-names)). P.S. @Linus-Sebastian (& anyone-else complaining-about the-pointing-stick): Here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7H8o_-7bKIU.html (A Tutorial on how-to-use the pointing-stick). Also: As far as I know, the switched-places "Function" (ie. Fn) and "Control" (ie. Ctrl) keyboard-keys were done for Ergonomy reasons. The spacebar acts as the function-button to turn on-&-off the keyboard-backlight, and the Fn key was moved to the lower-left-hand-corner to make it easier to find in the dark. [Here's an interview in which the inventor/designer/originator/creator about it discusses it:] ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-foOCDeiTmAo.html
DSLRs will be gone by 2045 (or atleast as popular as film cameras today) They are already losing market share to mirrorless cameras, I would be suprised if dslrs were still dominant in the market place ten years from now. Of course mirrorless cameras will also eventually fall to cellphones or whatever camera tech comes next
Sony stopped making dslr? Odd. I saw one earlier today at bestbuy. But dslr wont be going anywhere as mirror-less cant capture as much detail as dslr. Same as dslr cant capture as much detail as film. Both film and dslr will always be here
This sure brings back memories of playing games like megaman 3, final fantasy 7 and original pixel doom back in 2005. It all ended when it was smashed at the LAX airport. That's when my childhood ended.
I used to use this laptop for work. It was good, keyboard was awesome, resolution was awesome, the only downfall was a bit less style (that port was awesome too). I thought about buying one for myself but man it's pricy as hell.
Look into the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro (Both normal and GTX Editions). Amazing laptop, good build quality, long battery life, same components available and they don't run higher than 1200$ (the top model with the i7 8650U, 16 gigs of ram, GTX1050 and 256 gig ssd with one open slot)
I've used two of the previous models of X1 Carbon (and still do) as my daily work machine for the last year or so (programming etc.), with Linux. It's an absolutely perfect laptop for me, and I'll not be changing.
plz get your hands on xiaomi gaming notbook 2018. i7 8cores, 16gb ram 256ssd + 1tb , gtx1060 6gb, ips matte screen fhd.... tones of ports... super small... from 1030€ to 1350€ based on model.
This video is like a piece of candy stuffed inside a can of pickled herring. Sure you can get the candy in there, but was it worth it? edit: They added "Lenovo X1 Carbon Review" to the title, this comment is no longer relevant.
I rarely comment on yt, but This Thinkpad 1X is my favorite and I decide it deserve a positive comment on LTT channels. I runs small local company providing network infrastructure services. I have 1st gen X1 carbon (2012-2013), and I use it roughly. Sometimes I even use it on outdoor area, like On rooftop with some rain exposed to the laptop when I have to go on field to help my colleagues setup Wireless Radio devices. And inside the office, I rarely turn it off, usually i let it powered on besides my work desk to monitor network traffic and use it as my secondary PC. And yet it still working relaibly until today. The only issue now is the battery can barely hold a charge, but that is it. I used to have Fujitsu S series and HP Spectre, but none of them can hold up reliably with my type of usage. I think, it would be interesting if Linus do some kind of reliability test for this laptop like he did with the Dell XPS 13, or even like drop test he did with the Corsair AX1200i PSU. Do it Dell XPS 13 vs X1 carbon. I will be very happy to see the result.
