Loved to see your picks in each category. I saw Nyad last night and although the film had some issues I understand why both actresses got the Oscar nomination. Annette Bening delivers a stylized and interesting performance imo. Why did you rank her so low as compared to the supporting performance? Was it her choice of delivery? Also, unpopular opinion but I would've placed two or three other actors instead of Sterling K. Brown, Sessa being one of them. So I was happy to see some love for him here. Thanks again for a wonderful video.
Appreciate your input (as always!). Nyad isn't a great film, and I didn't think it was Bening's best work (others were more deserving of her slot at the Oscars). DEFINITELY agree about replacing Brown with Sessa! I see you and I are not alone on the love for his performance.
@@oscarman42 What a debut performance from Sessa! Even Milo (from Anatomy of a Fall) or perhaps Melton from (May December) would've made more sense to me than Sterling K. Brown. 🤷♂️
@@jonathanvelazquezph.d.2719 I had not idea that was Sessa's first film when I saw it! Milo was excellent (for that matter, so was Snoop 😄). I like Brown, but there wasn't much there to warrant a nomination.
Thank you, THANK YOU!! For mentioning Dominic Sessa in The Holdovers. He gave a near perfect and memorable performance. He was fantastic & certainly should’ve been nominate.
Good to hear some love for Sessa. I've heen saying all year that it's category fraud though. He's absolutely co-lead in The Holdovers, and I think that confusion eventually led to his snubs across the board
I liked The Holdovers but I’m not as big on it as others but Sessa is a find! He is exceptional in it. A knockout first role & he should have been nominated everywhere.
Thank you for sharing your process and voting for the SAG awards. Given the nominees, I agree with your actor, actress, and supporting actor choices. However, I would choose Divine Joy Randolph for supporting actress. For me the two huge omissions, likewise for Oscar nominations, were Charles Melton for May/December and Andrew Scott for All of Us Strangers. Both would win Best Supporting Actor and Actor for me. And btw Sandra Huller is stiff competition with Emma Stone and fortunately will compete for the Oscar. I'm happy with either.
It was my pleasure! Of course Randolph will easily win this, BAFTA and the Oscar. I just didn't see what everyone else saw in that performance. Melton's film was so disliked that he couldn't overcome it. All of Us Strangers wasn't getting any awards support (I haven't yet seen it). Hüller just missed out with SAG (likely not enough members saw it). And yes - it's between her and Stone.
@@oscarman42 Some related thoughts. Lily Gladstone is Stone and Huller's only competition. I wouldn't be angry if she won, but I think Stone and Huller are better. Huller certainly merited a Best Supporting Actress nomination for The Zone of Interest, another devastating performance in a wholly different key. But you can't expect the Academy to get it all right(as with Melton and Scott as well). My contradictory feelings: I want Emma Stone to win because she deserves it, and it will compensate for the undeserved Oscar for LalaLand; and I want Sandra Huller to win because she deserves it, and without a doubt in her two films is the acting revelation of the year!
@@williamreed2558 It may have been the role, but I was underwhelmed with Gladstone. Stone will win here - it's an "actor's" showcase. As for Oscar, we need to see how BAFTA plays out...
@@oscarman42 Gladstone's performance is definitely not a showcase, but it called for a portrayal of a long-suffering and empathic character, a kind of manifestation of soul, and I think she did it brilliantly. Honest men differ :)
@@williamreed2558 I don't think she could have done much more with the role, and I don't blame her for it. For me, Stone was just miles ahead in her bravura performance.
Lead Actor Colman Domingo .Paul Giamatti a close second. Lead Actress tough one for me but I lean Carey or Annette but I would be good with Margot or Lily Supporting Actor Ryan Gosling but I wish Dominic Sessa and Milo Michado Graner ( Anatomy of A Fall) had also been nominated. Supporting Actress Jodie or Da’Vine Ensemble Barbie
Thanks for the Barbie love! Domingo was wonderful in a so-so film. Giamatti is - to me - Giamatti...nothing new there. Mulligan was wonderful as was Robbie. I don't think Gosling has a chance (neither does he - check out the Oscar promo that just came out).
I think if anybody has a chance over Downey it’s probably Gosling but I’m general I think the supporting categories seem locked. I don’t necessarily disagree about Paul Giamotti it’s his kind of role but I think it’s possible they reward his body of work. No performance got to me like Colmon Domingo . I know he’s a pretty long shot at best but I was so moved by his work in Rustin . The movie could have been stronger. Carey did something different than showy or low key especially in the later part. Almost crying I think is more of a challenging than actually crying. She has a lot of small movements during the illness stage that seem very natural.
@@kellie-nd1yp If Giamatti wins, I think it would be for his career's work. The major snubs for Barbie likely hurt Gosling's chances. And Milo Garner was excellent (as was Snoop)!
The biggest thing is if they want to give Barbie something and they probably will . Gosling is popular even with those that don’t care as much for the film I also don’t downgrade Margot . I think there is a tendency to overlook the difficulty in playing a role like that and making it work. Granted I think it’s not a huge chance for Gosling or Robbie but I don’t completely rule them out . Gosling is certainly showing his versatility .
Thanks for sharing! Love it!!! I agree with your choices and probably would vote the same way but I would've liked to see Sandra Huller nominated here as well but I do hope it's Emma Stone gets the Oscar trophy, I can't shake this feeling that Lily Gladstone might win.
Thank you, friend! When Gladstone got snubbed at the BAFTAs, her chances diminished. Once Stone (likely) wins the SAG, I think it's a slam dunk for her.
I love these choices, in fact I can’t help but be curious. What drew you so closely to Emma Stone’s performance and so far from Lily Gladstone’s? I’m not criticizing her work, it was exceptional, but were Carey and Margot that good that they resonated with you over Lily?
I thought Stone gave a bravura performance that evolved as the film progressed (no spoilers). Mulligan was excellent. Robbie's performance is underrated...the film would not have worked if she didn't deliver. I found Gladstone rather one note...it's not the actresses' fault... she played the role as written. And I also didn't think Nyad was Bening's best work. Who gets your vote?
@@oscarman42 I agree with you on Stone but disagree on Gladstone. It was an understated performance, not one note, which is difficult to do. The quiet strength of her character, and the emotion she was able to convey without excessive display is more real and more human than any other performance among the nominees. That is why my heart is with her for the win; however Emma did do a brilliant job of portraying a unique character with a strong arc so she's a tough act to beat. I also don't think Robbie is underrated. She was fine as Barbie, but I actually found her performance one-note - I didn't think the role was particularly challenging and most people expressed more sympathy/love for Gosling's Ken. I don't think that was Gerwig's intent.
@@flowerfaeri We agree to disagree. I think Robbie's role was much more difficult to pull off than many believe, perhaps because the film is perceived as fluffy, lighter fare. Gladstone was understated and subtle - just not a performance I would bestow an award upon. But I appreciate your thoughtful and intelligent discourse on their respective work.
Didn't see much. But Cilllian Murphy carried Oppenheimer and would get my vote. Any number of actors could have done as good or better job than Robert Downey Junior. I can't imagine Emma Stone is that good, she rarely is. Margot Robbie should have been nominated
I wasn't wowed by any of the nominees for Supporting Actor, but of the five, I thought Downey Jr. did the best. Emma Stone was that good. And yes - Robbie deserved an Oscar nomination!
@oscarman42 Definitely RDJ and most likely DeVine, but Actor is down to Cillian and Paul and I still think Actress is not a lock for Emma. There'll be sentiment in the voting.
Great choices especially my personal favourite Cillian Murphy! Our lists are similar. If I could vote I would have voted for: BEST ACTOR - Cillian Murphy BEST ACTRESS - Lily Gladstone BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Robert Downey Jr BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Da’Vine Joy Randolph ENSEMBLE- Oppenheimer
Thank you! Randolph will easily win this and the Oscar. I thought Gladstone was rather one-note, but I concede that it was mainly due to the role as written, and she did all she could with it. Murphy is in a tough category. It will be interesting to see if he wins SAG and BAFTA.
I thought that although Nyad has some issues, both Annette and Jodie were terrific. I don't think Annette has a chance of winning - but it was a very brave, impressive performance and I would rank her higher. I also think Paul Giamatti has a real chance in his category and was much more effective than Bradley Cooper this year, who work felt a bit too self-conscious whereas Paul just became the role.
Completely respect your choices. For me, I thought Foster was the heart and soul of Nyad, but it wasn't Bening's best work. And while I liked Giamatti's performance, I felt he was, well...Giamatti, as seen in his previous roles. That said, he is very popular amongst his peers and I wouldn't be all that surprised if he pulls an upset win.
I agree with your choices from the nominees, but if I had my druthers: Charles Melton Best Supp. Actor for May December; Sandra Huller Best Actress for Anatomy of a Fall. I also wouldn't be upset if Domingo won.
Melton was considered a frontrunner at the beginning, but I think the intense dislike of the film by many hurt his chances of being nominated. Hüller was very good, and probably would have been nominated if more SAG members saw her performance. Domingo is the dark horse in his category, and while I would be very surprised if he scored an upset win, I don't see it happening.
Great video, hard to see randolph not winning best supporting actress, jodie foster hasnt had a sag or oscar nomination for almost 30 years, not since nell, she won the sag and should have won the oscar, you never know, this could be her year.
Some good choices imo. Respectfully, I believe I would vote for American Fiction as having the best cast. Some very strong moments from all members of that cast
@@oscarman42 It isn’t really an upset since Giamatti has won for best actor at the Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards. If there’s an upset it would be Cillian Murphy’s subdued and dreadfully boring performance in Oppenheimer or Bradley Cooper’s obnoxiously boring nasal performance in Maestro.
@@Tricki_Woo No one is right or wrong. You prefer Giamatti, that's great. I'm a SAG member and voted for Murphy. We'll see who the rest of the membership chooses.
Crazy how I was so hard on Emma stone winning the Oscar for la la land but now I’m rooting her for her second Oscar for poor things she has truly surprised me by taking her career in new heights it’s hard to think the same actress who was in easy a and the house bunny is the same actress in poor things and the favorite. I do think Lilly Gladstone might win but poor things has become a unexpected global sleeper hit very mulch close to making $100 million and Emma is winning more film critics voted awards recently so we’ll see. If there was any snubs in the acting categories who would you pick? I still think Dominic sessa in the holdovers, Charles melton, Julianne moore and Natalie Portman in may December, Archie madweke in saltburn, mark ruffalo in poor things, Fantasia and taraj p henson in the color purple, Andrew Scott and Clair Foy in all of us strangers, Sandra huller in antamony of a fall, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in origin
Melton started off with strong buzz, but the intense dislike for the film torpedoed his chances. Color Purple's lackluster box office likely hurt it's chances (but it was nominated for Cast). All of Us Strangers had great buzz but it garnered no awards support. If Hüller had one more month before the SAG nominations were announced I think she would have squeaked in.
@@oscarman42agreed I think with may December the film premise basically calling the same members of the academy acting branch may have turned some folks off and then when Vili Fualaau came out to denounced how he wasn’t contacted for the film, it may have been a lot of industry award show voters gotcha moment to the film
