Thanks for the shout out and doing this very underrated song. I really like both, the synth really enhances the Grace Jones version, but Chrissie's vocals swing it for me. I agree with those highlighting the Honneyman-Scott solo, the drums are also outstanding. Cheers

Bassist Sly Dunbar and drummer Robbie Shakespeare are in full flight on the Grace Jones' version bringing in an amount of dub influences. They are one of the most important producers / musicians in Jamaica who have been behind e.g Black Uhuru's success.They are known collectively as Sly & Robbie.

For me, Grace Jones does it better. I love the way she coldly declaims the lyrics like a sentence, it fits perfectly! Actually, even Chrissie Hynde said that when she first heard Grace's cover of her song, she thought 'Now that's how it's supposed to sound!' In fact it was one of the high points of my career'.

Although i am a huge Pretenders fan and have all their albums, for this song I give it to Grace for the beat and the groove and I love her style and her version could be played in a club and be a hit

I love both artists and both versions of this song - both sOo different it's hard to even compare. I heard the Pretenders version from the debut album back in January 1980 and then only a few months later heard the Grace Jones version on the radio as it was released as a single. To give some context I think we also need to remember how unusual the Grace version sounded back in 1980. As someone has made reference to below, even though Chrissie Hynde wrote the song she said that when she heard Grace's version she was like, "that's how I wanted it to sound." If I absolutely have to choose then I guess the Pretenders version ... by a few millimetres.

Grace released her version on her 1980 LP Warm Leatherette. Dub and funk interpretations of a wide range of originals. Grace herself admits she had no musical ability and a limited vocal range but somehow it works incredibly well. Backing musicians included Sly and Robbie, perfect rhythm section. If you're doing another "Who did it better" consider Warm Leatherette - Daniel Miller released the original

Wow, I'm learning again from your channel 🙂I didn't realise this was a Pretenders song! This is one of my favourite Grace Jones songs and it sounds almost like it was written specifically to suit her 🙂Not going to choose between them, Chrissie Hynde deserves the credit for writing it.

I’m VERY familiar with both and can write this as I’m listening . I prefer The Pretenders version but not by as much as I would’ve guessed when I was listening and drooling over the Pretenders album . They are quite different in tone and if I’m honest I also like the Grace Jones version , but and it’s a big but , Chrissie Hynd is a genuinely unique singer and songwriter and her band were all accomplished and polished musicians in their own right , whereas Grace had a ready made classic and a team of studio regulars and producers to help her along , she did a fair job but the original is sublime 👌 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Sly and Robbie backing Grace is bloody wicked. I saw Sly and Robbie in the very early 2000s it was the LOUDEST GIG i have ever seen and the mix was perfect

Both are great and deserve a listen in their own right.....but my casting vote would be The Pretenders ......just......the solo in the Pretenders version won it for me.

I’ve heard the Grace Jones version so many times. I like The Pretenders’ version as a novelty but ultimately prefer Grace Jones’ take. The way she delivers the vocals suit the lyrics better imo.

I always thought that Grace Jones' version was the original! She covered various other songs, even Joy Division's 'She's Lost Control'. The Pretenders' version was certainly more raw and stripped-back.

The Pretenders all day long ! Kenny Everett who was a Radio 1 DJ who was sacked for being too Funny , had is own TV prog called " The Kenny Everett Video Show " The Pretenders were discovered on Kennys programme ! The track was "Stop Sobbing " the rest is history , Great Band , tragic career ! Brill , Cant be doing with Grace Jones , she is a Bratt ! cheers !

Hi folks. For me it has to be The Pretenders original. Is the Flash & the Pan song you're thinking of "Waitin' for a train" ? That's a "rapped" song & a favourite of mine. For me The Pretenders is the definitive version. Chrissie Hynds's singing is much more nuanced than Grace Jones'. I had the good fortune to see The Pretenders original line up perform this live when the band toured New Zealand after the release of the first album. For Grace Jones I heartily recommend "My Jamaican Guy". I stopped thinking of her as a disco artist after that.

Grace Jones’ version has a wicked beat and her performance is a vibe. Not my favorite Pretenders’ song. They are really two very different songs.

I was rolling my eyes when you were both discussing The Pretenders being influenced by The Police on the strength of this one track .. 😳 There is not one shred of Police in this track .. not one ! Police formed 1977 Pretenders 1978. I think they both had the same influences. Punk and Reggae cross pollinated - see The Clash

@@forfar1956 I’m fully aware , as a paid up , lived the experience , I was there , dyed in the wool , Teenage Punk in the late 70’s of who was who , which bands they’d been in and who they’d slept with to get there 😳 That’s not in question here 🤷‍♂️.. my direct and honest reply to their assertion that C n C could detect The Police fingerprints on this tracks vibe I found to be challenging and baffling and I just don’t hear it tbh .. hope that clears up your confusion 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
