In this video, i will be talking about the difference between Optician, Optometrist and Ophthalmologist. What are their scope and how to become one. Who is an Optician? Who is an Optometrist? Who is an Ophthalmologist? What do each of them perform? What will be the educational qualification of Optician, Optometrist and Ophthalmologist? Optician is the person dispensing Spectacle to you when you give your glass prescription. Optometrist is the one who does refraction and glass testing for you and gives you a glass prescription. Ophthalmologist is the doctor, who give glass prescription, does eye examination, diagnosis an eye condition and then treats it will medicines or in case needed with eye surgeries.

An optometrist is a doctor of optometry (O.D.) . She/he has to work through various vision therapies to treat abnormalities, and can prescribe drugs for the eyes exvept steroids. If surgery is required, the patient is sent to an ophthalmologist (M.D)

I don’t know the scenario now on neet exams.. but good income profession without MBBS degree includes optometrist, pharmacist, pathologist, micro biologists, biochemist, psychologist, etc.

yes, but build your skills, you will get good job.. i know of optometrist with diploma getting more salary than MSc.. so extra degree will have slight advantage but most important is your skill..

NCAHP Act, 2021 padi +2 mudichittu 2+ years Diploma (D.Optom) panna mattum dhaan Ophthalmic Technician avum, 4 years degree (B.Optom) panna mattum dhaan Optometrist avum work panna mudiyum. Sila institutions la 10th mudichadhum Diploma panna allow pandranga, but law padi andha diploma valid illa, so +1, +2 mudikama Diploma pandradhu waste of time and money.

Sir what is the difference between certificate course in optometry, ophthalmic assistant, diploma in optometry, bsc optometry? What are the works they do in these different types of optometry fields sir?

Certificate course/ diploma holders work as assistants to ophthalmologists, so they don't have freedom to make decisions which an optometrist with 4 years degree enjoys. As per NCAHP act, 2021 only candidates with 2 years diploma will be allowed to work as ophthalmic assistants, so there is no use of pursuing 1 year certificate course, also only candidates with 4 years B.Optom/ BSc in Optometry will be able to practice optometry and start their own clinic.

Thank you for clarifying.. Diploma optometry and BSc optometry can do refraction and they have lot of opportunities in hospitals, optical shops, etc.. but certificate course is not recognised, so they can assist doctors, if a particular doctor is willing to provide job..

Apart from refraction an optometrist can involve in diagnostics, prescribing contact lenses, low vision devices, vision therapy, etc. National Commission for Allied and Health Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021 clearly states that only candidates with: a) 4 years degree will be allowed to register as an optometrist and b) 2 years diploma will be allowed to register as an ophthalmic assistant So yes, degree holders will always have an edge over diploma holders. You can do MSc and Phd in your field.. but if you want to become an ophthalmologist, you have to complete MBBS and then MS or DNB or DO..

You have lot of scope, you can run an optical shop, you can work in optical shop, eye hospitals, you can also work in Optical related Multi national companies..

Hi! Harini Mahendran, SASTRA in collaboration with Elite School of Optometry is the best in India. You can work in hospitals, optical outlets, lens manufacturing companies, ophthalmic equipment manufacturing companies, colleges, research labs, etc. Also you can start your own general clinic, speciality clinic with/ without optical outlet, provide freelance services, etc.

My income will vary from other ophthalmologist.. because I am having my own hospital, income and expenses are higher.. but generally an ophthalmologist can earn minimum of 80k / month, if they are senior, they will earn more, if they do surgeries, they will earn higher.. Eye surgeons with good practise can earn upto 10L/ month..
