Dude, he IS better than people give him credit for. Even though his harps don't deal massive damage, they don't HAVE to! The status ailments they give can make trash encounters super easy. Lamia Harp FTW. 👍🏻
As for edge I tend to use a boomerang and katana because for some reason having edge with a boomerang in his right hand makes the whole attack long range so for the normal end game party my formation is b f b f b with kain and cecil in front
Really nice list :) Edward and Cid are actully quite formiddable in the psp remake. Though being said. They are awful in their part in the game itself. And Yang imo is a god tier charachter with his end game gear. But I largely agree with this list :) nicely done!!!
Yeah Edward is actually kind of great in the GBA version. His final weapon hits all enemy types for critical health from the back row, and he’s lightning fast. Plus his special move can be upgraded to a stackable mighty guard.
Rosa is definitely god tier. She can do great physical damage and she has way more survivability than Edge or Rydia which is good because she is the one reviving. In some boss fights it’s easier to let Edge and Rydia drop while Cecil, Rosa and Kain take on the boss
I remember when I finally got the artemis bow and artemis arrows and heroine armor, and equipped them on her but never really used her attack out of habit. Then one battle I decided to shoot a blue dragon and HOLY SWEET JESUS!!!!
Edward is nice in the versions of the game where he has 8 songs to cast. Cid is OK in versions of the game where his Peep/Inspect ability works on every enemy AND where the game keeps track of enemy health after they've been scanned once. Also I noticed when grinding for levels that Cid has better health than Cecil, and roughly the same defense since he can equip good armor during that brief period you have him. But yeah, like most people I was glad when he finally left the party.
Edward is actually kinda insane in the GBA and PSP versions 😅 and he's fine in the DS versions lol, hastemarch life's blessing and hero's song are pretty good 😅 cid is not too bad or good in GBA and 100% trash in the 3D versions
It’s so unfortunate you can’t use all the party members in the DS version, that’s when they’re all at their best….i remember even Edgar being somewhat useful. Plus everyone is much more tanky, so Edgar’s bard songs were actually useful. Magic Rods work better in the DS version, even the very first Magic Rod, the “Rod” did very respectable damage when casting its spell (Mage Masher I think was the name of its spell), and the Stardust Rod is a straight up free nuke with the only drawback being it takes longer to charge than spells that consume MP. Then there’s Rosa, I don’t have to discuss the usefulness in having unlimited arrows lol….Cid also did good damage in the DS version, and could take hits okay, though he was probably the most boring character lol The DS version is a bit harder at first, and maybe has somewhat harder boss fights, but has a much more consistent difficulty spike as you play the game, where as new areas will just kick the shit out of you in the older versions…..I’ve never played a version that allows you to switch party members in and out, but omg I can’t imagine using anyone but the end 5…..MAYBE Cid or Yang could replace Edge if you really wanted to do that, but I don’t see the benefit
Funny thing is that Cecil would definitely lose ranking because of him being a character can't do much because of plot I mean the only thing I used him for was that 1 specific battle in the final chapter
I tend to rank parties instead of individual characters. The game constantly forces you to change you party and thus your tactics. Some parties are designed to be more of a challenge than others. Going up to Mt Ordeals with dark knight Cecil, and the magnet cave before you defeat the dark elf are my two least favorite. I usually just run from battles until I get through these sections and check the chests later once I don't have a handicap. For me characters are more about what role they serve in my party. Bad party members often just don't stand out as another party member does the job better. Porom suffers from having Tellah in the party most of the time and she doesn't have as much utility as Tellah (and later paladin Cecil) can heal too. Cid doesn't stand out because he's a physical attacker but Yang and Cecil are better. Then you get Kain making Cid the weakest in a party of 4 physical attackers. Edward I don't mind as I use him to status an enemy that is not currently being attacked to keep it incapacitated. The sages (Tellah and FuSoYa) I find that Osmose is a necessity for them to keep their MP high and their utility with both black and white magic is incredibly useful.
personally, i put Decil above Pecil. reason being.... why the FCK should i care about his white magic? sure it's situationally good but so are items. his cover mechanic is cool and all but rather situational as well. his hp and defenses are bonkers though so good on him for those. but Decil's darkness ability is just insanely useful for screen clearing in the versions that it's an AoE and in the DS where it's a huge buff it's technically even better. the only thing stunting him is equipment and weakness to undeads. but he has a sword that can insta-kill and against undeads throwing potions is a thing. dunno just kinda wish we could have had a NG+ where we could keep Decil. or could interchange between the forms at will like his dissidia stuff.
I used Pecil's white magic in between fights. I used Decil's Dark Wave a grand total of... three times, if I'm remembering correctly? Actually no, nevermind, _I_ didn't use it, the game used it in the intro and I ignored it from there on out. It'd be handy when Pecil grabs the idiot ball and goes full 'stay in the kitchen' mode too, if it mattered, but the girls (wisely) ignore him.
@@CoralCopperHead granted Darkness isnt needed at all for the portion of the game you have access to it, but it's incredibly useful for that section of the game when your AoE ability is basically sod and all without Tellah/Palom/overleveled C-Rydia. if it could be kept it would be great for conserving MP (granted ethers arent particularly hard to come by in this game, neither are tents/cottages so MP isnt a huge concern) and be great against physically resistant enemies (like puddings) as for healing between fights..... honestly it's more efficient to use healing items most of the time. exception being his esuna i suppose (and raise on the 3D versions) but i can see the appeal if you're running low on them.
I would definitely bump Child Rydia up a tier and bring Adult Rydia down to the bottom of Top. Losing the versatility of her white magic for_MOAR DAMAGE just made me wonder why it didn't replace her _black_ magic instead. Two separate abilities using the same resource for the same effect isn't my cup of tea.
Real fast S Tier Cecil (Paladin), Rosa A tier is Cecil(DK), Rydia, Kain. B tier Edge, Yang C tier Tellah Palom Porom CID D tier Edward Fuyaso??? F tier Kain again cause he pisses me off. (This is solely from the 3Ds version. I gave Rosa Dual cast and that made her kinda OP)
I'm back here after playing the pixel remaster after only playing the GBA and PSP port where you can change the party...Edge is the worst party member in JRPGs. He starts out underleveled (he was 15 levels lower than everyone else when I got him with Rydia doing more damage, more HP and better defence),he only has a few long range weapons and you have to buy them before he joins and you are cut off on returning there for awhile and anything he can do everyone else can do better. He starts behind and he stays left behind due to him having 0hp at the end of most battles.
Its too bad you don't like this game. FF4 is my favorite in the entire series and I've played them all. Whats funny is with the exception of FF2 I've heard people say that each different game in the series was their favorite. My top three favs of the whole series are 1: FF4, 2: FF Tactics and 3: FF13. I'm also not sure why 13 gets so much hate. The ending of that game I felt was amazing.
Golbez isn't playable, though. While he's a party member near the end during the fight with Zemus, alongside Fusoya, that's just a scripted fight, you can't do anything but watch them. So I don't know how you would rank him.
Love this channel so much! Didn't necessarily agree with the list, but a very fun watch anyway! I also just have a different playstyle sooooo... Honestly, it's a hard game to rank with so many versions lol 😅 an FF4 character ranking was my first video I ever made lol
Yes after years please! I wanna play it but I don't own it and I don't have the time for a grand rpg. Your lists are great and I recently subscribed even tho you said I didn't have too lol. Keep it up!
Edward should be also on the god tier as well because of how his stats Skyrocket at random after level 70. By the time you get to the lunar ruins and versions that allow you to change party members everybody should be around that level anyways. Even though his stats go up randomly if everybody is at level 99 Edward will have better stats than most of the cast. Also the way damage multipliers work in Final Fantasy 4 if an enemy is week to more than one thing they're it's going to increase how much damage is given. The Apollo's harp which is his third best weapon that you get for doing his trial in Mount ordeals deals extra damage to both dragons and things that are weak to Fire. Now think about how many dragons there are on the moon and in the lunar subterrain. In the Game Boy Advance version there is what is known as the psycho Edward glitch if you cast berserk on Edward and he goes into low hit points he will hide but instead of regular hiding when he comes back out on his next turn he will attack an enemy then go back and hiding immediately. He will only come out in hiding if he is the last party member left so due to the psycho Edward glitch you have one character who was literally impervious. Edward is simultaneously the worst character in the franchise and the most broken.
I definitely agree with Cid being shit tier. He has no good abilities, his hammers deal less damage than any other physical attacker. In the games where you can swap him in at the end, I just wouldn’t, he’s bad, unless you want a challenge. Challenge run for the final boss could be Porom, Cid, Edward (if you don’t get his super busted gear in his trial dungeon otherwise he’ll become a God of DPS as he’ll get two turns to every other characters one and he becomes untargetable with hide), Palom, and Cecil (because he can’t be switched out). Cecil will be doing a lot of the heavy lifting DPS wise with this party.
White Mages are S tier in a lot of FF games. Rosa is especially important because nobody comes close to matching her healing abilities and the damage ratios in FF4 demand high-volume healing. No megalixirs in sight, either (at least the original releases).
I only played the SNES version and when you got to Rydia I thought 'eh? I thought Edge was the one that was always dying'. But then you said the ds version+ buffed his tankiness by a lot, and you STILL criticized his survivability. So eh, I guess I agree. I played my snes ff4 to death, got the artemis bow and the dragon whip for Rydia (well the bow is for rosa but I'm just saying I got the rare weapons). Given that like 1/3 of the trash in the final dungeon are dragons of some kind, Rydia actually makes a pretty decent physical attacker as well with the dragonwhip. Though when she finally learns flare it's hard to compete since it's a fast cast that consistently does cap or near cap damage.
I would've put Edge on top because Steal, but agree with everybody else's placement! I now have a higher attachment to Porom because she was one of my first white mages in FFRK, but agree she doesn't bring anything Rosa can't in IV.
Tellah too low, he's honestly there for quite a while, consistently useful, and leaves when he would cease to be. Cid also seems more like a low tier character to me, I never really had any issues with him dying and his damage is okay. Not comparable to Edward imo.
I have to ask, you were nervous about doing this game... How do you feel about making a tier list for the playable cast in Hajimari no Kiseki (trails into reverie)? If you haven't been keeping up with the series, there are 51 playable characters in that one =P. Though I guess suikoden games still have more lol.
@@locloudanerpg Ahh looking forward to it then? nice. I already watched yours awhile back. But I think the cast jump from 4 to reverie is quite large, plus 4 kinda restricts what many of the party members wear, and I don't think Reverie does at all! Looking forward to the game since it has a high replay value post game dungeon thing like CS2 to my understanding, with the cast size to go wild with. eeek. I just hope Alfin makes a good caster. I don't like emma much, and Alfin has the good colour restrictions (unless they change it in Reverie).
I wouldn't mind a tier list for the After Years. I will say though, I think Rosa is one of the hottest Final Fantasy girls of all time. Adult Rydia as well.
